HUGE congratulations to our friends at FitzGerald's in Berwyn!! The iconic building has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Please allow us to re-introduce ourselves, as of today, we are “Historic FITZGERALDS Nightclub”. We have gotten word that the National Park Service has officially entered 6615 W. Roosevelt into the National Register of Historic Places.
The only Music Venue/Nightclub in Illinois to have this distinction and, we believe, the only one of its kind in the country.
It has been 627 days since we sat in the basement of the Berwyn Public Library on the hunt for an old photo, and discovered a story of a place worthy of the (literal) history books. One of the most common questions we’ve gotten throughout this journey is “Won’t that prevent you from doing any modifications or changes to the club?” The answer is YES. We never had any plans for that; we like it just the way it is.
The next most common question we get is “Why is this important?” and we’ll answer that with a question; How far would you go to protect the things most important to you? If your answer is “just about anything”, than you know where our head is at on this.
THANK YOU to the FITZGERALDS community, who not only didn’t think this was a crazy idea, but has supported us every step of the way. We can’t stress enough how it is, and has always been, the support of people who love and patron this place that have helped it survive for over a century so that today we get to call it a historic landmark.
Thank you to FITZGERALDS staff and their families who remain the heartbeat of this old nightclub. Now that we’ve got our sea-legs, we’re ready to work on our next goal; to become one of the best American-Roots music clubs in the country.
To our two small kids who will eventually scroll past this message one day; you are our everything, and the reason we make decisions like this.
Celebrations and plaque dedications TO BE ANNOUNCED…
Long-live the small clubs.
