After being injured in the July 2023 car accident that tragically claimed the life of Lucian Li, Will Jordan ’26 and David Chintala ’26 are back on the lacrosse field. With any season comes challenges, but having lost a teammate and close friend, Jordan and Chintala have grappled with both physical and mental hurdles over the course of the school year. Throughout it all, they have relied on the support of their teammates, coaches and families, and are now setting their sights on winning the NCAC Championship in honor of Lucian. Jordan and Chintala sat down with the Collegian to discuss recovering from their injuries, remembering their friend and striving to live for Lucian in all that they do.

Plans to increase the electrical capacity to Wiggin Street Coffee (Wiggins) are underway, which would allow the coffee shop to once again operate a functioning toaster. Construction will also update the building’s exterior appearance and HVAC system.
Students began noticing the toaster’s absence in October, when Wiggins’ employees started to offer the option to have the cafe’s bagels and baked goods either microwaved or served cold. A sign on the counter informed patrons that an “electrical issue” was at fault, leaving many customers wondering when — or if — the toaster would function again.

The No. 23 Kenyon golf team got back to work over the weekend, competing in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on St. Simons Island in Georgia. The Owls shot a total of 892 over the three rounds, tying for 11th in the field of 30 teams.
Kenyon carded a team score of 302 on the first day of play, leaving the Owls near the middle of the pack in a tie for 16th. Looking to forget Friday’s score, Kenyon headed back to the course on Saturday and totaled a team score of 286, the Owls’ best score of the invitational and the fourth-best round in program history.

Many of us know the Crozier Center for Women for its cozy common spaces, welcoming porch and friendly feline neighbor, but who exactly is the house on Wiggin Street named after? Doris Crozier was the dean of the Coordinate College for Women, guiding the first women to study on the Hill from 1969 to 1972 when the College became fully co-educational. This Women’s History Month, we honor Crozier’s contributions to campus life in the early days of co-education on the Hill.

In Rosse Hall on Saturday evening, the Chamber Singers sang, “In beauty may I walk / through the returning seasons.” Meant as a metaphor for life in the original Navajo prayer, this could also serve as a metaphor for the concert as a whole. Conductor and Professor of Music Benjamin Locke and the talented Chamber Singers explored beautiful music from different time periods, cultures and languages in this year’s spring concert.
Locke, affectionately known as “Doc Locke” on campus, humorously shines in the classroom and onstage. A familiar presence for 40 years (over half the age of the Department of Music), Locke is known for his rapport with students and the Sunday night dinners that he hosts at his house every week. At the end of the folksong “Dubula, Mfanandini,” he pointed out a few dancing audience members. “If we were in South Africa, everyone would be on their feet dancing!”

What’s in a name? Many students are aware that a number of aristocratic benefactors financed Philander Chase’s founding of the College, but Lord Kenyon and Lord Gambier rarely get much recognition beyond their names in the present day. As we head into our celebration of the bicentennial, the Collegian looks into the College’s namesakes.

On Friday, the senior class and various professors — all dressed to the nines — gathered in the Gund Commons Ballroom for the annual celebration of Fandango, the event marking 100 days to graduation. The event served as an opportunity for seniors to reminisce on their time at Kenyon, and to drink and dine with the professors they have known for four years. At the event, Senior Class President Rachel Chen ’24 announced this year’s Baccalaureate and Commencement Speakers: Professor of Chemistry James Keller will speak at this year’s Baccalaureate ceremony, while the Most Rev. Michael Curry, presiding bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church, will speak at the College’s 196th annual Commencement.

Approximately 330 seniors registered for Fandango, according to Chen. While registration for faculty members was optional, over 30 professors RSVP’d to the event as well. Like last semester’s Senior Soiree, registration for Fandango also served as a fundraiser for the Senior Class Challenge, the funds for which will go to the Student Success Fund. According to Chen, almost 70% of students donated, meeting the Senior Class Committee’s benchmark for the event.

This week, the Office of Residential Life (ResLife) announced via email that the housing selection process for Apartment and Suite Housing (ASH) will change for the 2024-25 academic year. Currently, the process for traditional and non-traditional assignments (suites and apartments versus dormitories) are combined, but under the new system they will be separated. These updates will only affect students interested in non-traditional residence hall placements, and will not affect pre-placements. Pre-placements include accommodation-based and substance-free housing, Community Advisor placements and specialty housing assignments, such as division or theme housing.

It’s only the second week back on the Hill, but the campus is already buzzing with events. Rush week kicked off on Sunday with a “Meet The Greeks’’ event in Gund Commons. During rush week, Greek organizations host various events where prospective members can schmooze with existing members of the organization they hope to join. The week will culminate with organizations offering bids to the students they wish to invite, beginning a monthslong initiation process. Approximately 25% of the student body is involved in Greek Life, according to Kenyon’s website, including four fraternities, four sororities and one coeducational service society.

The Kenyon women’s basketball team hit a tough stretch over winter break, going 1-9 to send the Owls to a 3-14 record (1-5 NCAC) on the season.

The Owls started conference play on Dec. 9, falling at home to the DePauw University Tigers, 59-32. DePauw was thoroughly in control for the duration of the game, holding Kenyon to under 10 points in all four quarters. Claudia Cooke ’24 led the Owls with 18 points, but was the only Kenyon player to score double figures. The Owls also lost guard Alexis Newman ’26, who had started all eight games she had appeared in, to a knee injury that will sideline her for the rest of the year in the contest.

This past Friday, the Kenyon women’s basketball team (2-5) fell in a challenging matchup against Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Despite their recent back-to-back victories, the Owls faced a formidable opponent in the Spartans, who displayed an efficient offense and tenacious defense. Unfortunately, the Owls struggled to find their rhythm, resulting in a decisive 72-29 defeat.

Claudia Cooke ’24 and Alexis Newman ’26 showcased their consistency throughout by leading Kenyon in points for the second consecutive game. Defensive standout Anissa Hardy ’26 exhibited an exceptional performance, contributing one steal, six points, five defensive rebounds and a season-high three blocks. However, the experienced Case Western team, boasting five seniors and two graduate students, posed significant challenges.
