CORRECTION -- Due to a reporting error, the article in today's (7-5) edition of The Gazette about the Galax Fire Department's carnival contained information from last year's event. Below is the correct info. We apologize for any confusion, and we'll have an article with this year's information in the paper on Wednesday (7-10). GALAX VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT
2024 ANNUAL FIREMAN’S CARNIVAL
JULY 9TH thru JULY 13TH

The Galax Volunteer Fire Department is excited to announce the return of Cole Shows and Amusements to Felts Park in beautiful downtown Galax for the 2024 Annual Fireman’s Carnival! Mark your calendars as the Carnival returns to Galax Tuesday, July 9th through Saturday, July 13th with many rides for all ages, games, and tons of fair food! Gates open nightly at 5:00pm with the rides starting at 6:00pm and running nightly until 11:00pm. Get your $20.00 ride all night wristband online early at www.colerides.com through July 9th at 6pm and save $5 on the normal ride all night wristband price of $25.00.
Gate admission Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday is $5 for adults and $3 for children 6 to 12 years of age. Kiddos 5 and under admitted free.
Gate admission Friday and Saturday nights are $10 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 12 years of age. Kiddos 5 and under admitted free.
RACE NIGHTS: In addition to the Carnival, Friday and Saturday nights will be our Annual Motorsports Events. Friday night July 12th is our Figure 8 Race beginning at 6:30pm. Crazy 8 Race, Backwards Race, Circle Race and Sack Race where the drivers are blindfolded and their passengers tell them where to go! Saturday night brings the Demolition Derby to town! DemolitionRacing starts at 5:30pm wilt 4 Classes of Carnage. V8 Modifieds. Stock V6/4 Cylinder Mini Vans and Trucks and Stock V8. You won’t want to miss this show!!

It's the end of an era this Saturday -- make plans to attend the 30th (and final) Wayne Henderson Music Festival & Guitar Competition on June 15. Thanks to Wayne and all those involved in the festival over the past three decades for showcasing and celebrating traditional music, and for giving back to the community through hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for young musicians.

On the third Saturday of every June the Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition features some of the region’s best traditional musicians!

NOTICE! NOTICE! NOTICE! Last night the Galax Fire Department was dispatched at 10pm to set a Landing Zone for AirCare Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist at Fairview Elementary School. A recreational DRONE was noticed over the LZ before Air Care arrived, then moved a distance away when the helicopter approached. Flying a Drone near an emergency incident is against FAA UAS regulations and is against the law. We don't get cranky at GFD, unless someone puts OUR public or OUR first responders at risk. Please consider this an educational post and I am completely sure this was an accident. Please also understand that if my firefighters, mutual aid partners, or citizens are placed in danger or taken advantage of in any way, I will work with the proper authorities to address the issue. The LZ was safely set and the emergent patient transfered to the helicopter. All units cleared in 40 mins. Stay Safe! Chief Mike

A note about tomorrow's edition of The Declaration: due to a printing issue, the Home & Garden section will not be included in the newspaper. The front page will have a promo saying the section is inside, but that page was already printed when we found out the special section would not be included. The Home & Garden section should be in The Gazette on Wednesday (4/24) and will be in The Declaration next week (5/1).
