Fire in the Basement: A Father’s Love for His Son ⬇️
Gary Keylon’s dad was a hard worker. They didn’t have much money growing up, but they had a home full of love and Christian values.
When Gary began to develop a passion for sports, his dad took the time to build a weight bench with weights, so he could work out and build the strength he needed to be successful in athletics.
This weight set quickly became the centerpiece of their time together and the place of bonding in their relationship. Together, as father and son, they’d do their workouts.
They would measure their progress, chart their numbers, and work together to improve their strength. It was a place Gary treasured.
One day, while at school a couple of miles away from home, Gary saw a cloud of dark smoke billowing off in the distance in the direction of his house. He didn’t know it at the time, but his dad was fighting an all-out blaze that had started from an oil furnace in their basement.
They lived out in middle-of-no-where Tennessee which meant that it would take firefighters a good deal of time to get their trucks out there.
The fire was quickly getting out of hand, shifting his dad’s focus from putting it out to saving what he could. His dad had the opportunity to run into the house and grab one thing.
Most would have grabbed photo albums, money, or documents. His dad didn’t grab those.
When Gary arrived home later that afternoon, he saw the place where his house previously stood.
While trying to process what had happened, he looked to his left and there sat his weight set in the front yard. While telling this part of his story, Gary broke down in tears.
His dad recognized the value of the weight bench. It wasn’t the monetary value that made it worth saving. It was because it had become the place where he and his son had built their relationship together.
The story would come full circle over a decade later as Gary’s strength journey that began in that basement with his dad would land him a place on one of the most elite, well-known strength groups to ever travel the world: the Power Team.
This ministry would travel the globe doing feats of strength in front of thousands of people on a weekly basis.
It became Gary’s platform to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with millions of people.
