Backwoodsman Magazine has some exciting news to share with our community! Even though the current edition was completed by Charlie and his team in Mid-December, it turns out we’re printing with a different company starting with the Winter issue 2024! Without much notice, our previous printing company has merged with another company, creating the need for BWM to migrate immediately to a new printer. This big change has left our readers stranded during the holidays and we hope you will accept our sincere apologies. We will keep everyone posted as the print and delivery dates become solidified, and in the meantime we greatly appreciate your patience and support! Thank you so much for being part of the BWM community!

Please enjoy reading Charlie Jr's Notes from the Winter 2024 Edition Below.

A Survival Kit That Makes Sense!
By Tim Swanson
"Hiking and backpacking are enjoyable and peaceful experiences that get us outdoors. However, every year, thousands of people get lost, injured, or die during wilderness trips. Experience and good judgment keep these things from happening, and a good survival kit can also create a more comfortable experience. I hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire quite frequently with groups or by myself. Hiking 15-20 miles in one day is not uncommon in the mountains, and my overall goal is to reach the summit, and get back to the car. "

"Years ago, I read an excellent article in Backwoodsman magazine about a flintlock musket being the ideal weapon for a long-term survival scenario. This was an interesting idea – and really got me thinking - why on earth would such an archaic weapon be the right fit for survival in a modern age? "

Check out "Two Cold Steel Budget Knives" by Jim House in the Sept/Oct 2023 issue!

My most elegant knife now has a list price of over $450. It’s not only elegant, but also capable of anything one would expect of a knife. It should be. However, it is not a knife that I use for simple chores and it is stored in a safe with fi****ms. I like fine cutlery and I suppose that everyone who camps, explores, hunts, or engages in other outdoor activities realizes just how useful and important a knife is. However, for most uses, a high-quality, expensive knife is not necessary.

“What do you want yourknife to do? Well, if youare like me, the answer isto peel potatoes, cut cornoff the cob, slice tomatoes, open boxes, and cut someslivers from a stick to usefor starting a fire.”

The Path To Self Reliance
by Christopher Nyerges

"It was a random phone call: "How many of your classes will I need to attend before I cansave at least 50% -- maybe 100%-- on my food bill?" The caller primarily wanted to save money on his food bills using wild foods. How long does it take to learn about the wild plants of the world, and their medicinal and edible properties? It takes time, and like any science or art, the time it takes you depends upon how much time and effort you're willing to devote to the study and practice. At an early age, I became interested in knowing exactly how Native Americans of past days could live off the land when there were no supermarkets, hospitals, or hardware stores."

Check out "An Unusual Hunter" by Rich Creason in the Sept/Oct 2023 issue!

"The predator waits patiently for his prey, and the unsuspecting animal comes closer finally entering the killing zone. The trap is sprung, and the hunter has captured his meal. But in this case, the animal is an insect and the hunter is a plant!
Carnivorous plants have fascinated people for ages. Hollywood versions of man- eating plants have appeared in every horror movie set in a swamp or on an alien planet. (It’s always the last guy in the line who gets eaten!) While to my knowledge, no man-eating size plants still exist, if we were the size of an ant or a fly, the movie could be a true story."

Check out this article in the July/August 2023 Issue:

The Hopi Way by Cam Kenstler

If you were asked what the oldest continuously inhabited town in the United States was, what might be your answer? Charleston, South Carolina? New York City? St. Augustine, Florida? Perhaps these are good answers for the oldest European settlement in the US, but there is a town far older than these inhabited by a very different people.

They are a people of the high desert, of red rocks, baking sun, high plateaus, little rain. A people of tradition and ceremony, hardiness and resilience, peace and order. They are the Hopi tribe of what is now Northern Arizona. One of their towns, Oraibi, nestled among the rocky plateaus, is about 1000 years old and has been lived in since its founding. From this we see that a unique people must have lived there, a people very stable and orderly in their ways, who did not migrate all over the land depending on the seasons like most indigenous tribes of North America.

Carving A Simple Wooden Spoon
By Tim Swanson

Carving a spoon can be as easy or hard as you make it. They don’t require much to make and can be carved from almost any shape or size of wood. Sitting around a campfire and talking with friends is my favorite place to carve in general. But carving a spoon to mix up the soup on the campfire certainly makes for a more special experience. Spoons make a great gift for any type of person, as everyone likes to eat! I remember one day where I bought a pint of ice cream at the grocery store, and really wanted to eat it in the parking lot. After finding a scrap of wood in the trunk of my car, I whittled out a “spoon shaped” piece of wood in about 30 seconds. Just don’t ask me if I ate the entire pint of ice cream in one sitting.

Today’s featured article is: ENJOY THE DELICIOUS WILD NETTLE PLANT, An excellent food, medicine, and fiber source by Christopher Nyerges

With this year’s rainstorms, there has been an abundance of the nettles plant, among many other common wild herbs. Though widely regarded as a “nuisance plant”, indigenous peoples of California used the native nettle plant for food. It was one of the favorite foods of Barbara Drake, a Tongva elder. (The Tongva are the indigenous people of the greater Los Angeles County area). “I love to cook with nettles,” said Drake, who was renowned for her nettle and sunflower seed soup, which she would make and serve at large gatherings......

Today’s featured article SO, WHAT’S IN THE BAG?
By David Langerman

When our early forefathers left the warmth and comfort of their hearth and the security of the settlement to hunt or journey for any reason they had to rely upon fireand their firelock (AKA flintlock) to provide for what they had left behind. A blanket would have offered more comfort, but in its absence a fire would suffice. Some provisions of food for the journey would have been welcome, but without it the firelock and the woods would provide. His security was in his own hands, and what was in his hand was either a flintlock rifle or fowler.

Today’s featured article is TOMAHAWK AND KNIFE: The Woodsrunner’s Duo by Paul “Many Rifles” Laster

Beyond a long rifle, Hawken, or your flintlock trade gun, there is nothing that says woodsrunner like a good knife and ‘hawk. What could be more iconic than the buckskin-clad wilderness wanderer, kneeling to check the trail for tracks and sign, his trusty tomahawk shoved into the sash around his waist, his long knife always at the ready?

BWM would like to acknowledge the trouble many folks are having finding us on the Newsstands, and take the opportunity to sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

We know it's got to be frustrating and want all of our readers to know the magazine industry has had some major changes with regard to merchandising that we hope will result in more consistency on the newsstands by summertime. Right now, current issues are set to be displayed the last week or 2 of the first month of the issue, so our March/April 23 issue should be displayed in the coming 2 weeks. This is a big change and we're sorry we did not give more of a heads-up! We are navigating a changing landscape in our industry and appreciate everyone who continues to join us on this adventure!

At the present time, it seems the bookstore chains such as B&N and Books-A-Million, as well as local bookstores, are the best bet for finding the current issue. You can also email Tiffany ([email protected]) and she can check on specific stores in your area. You can also order any issue you've missed directly from us at https://backwoodsmercantile.com/

“Three more miles, just three more lousy miles to the cabin,” said the old man to himself as he snowshoed into the twilight gloom. He had already covered 12 miles that day without stopping for lunch. And sleeping last night in his unheated tent was never a pleasant experience.“

“Love them or hate them, every mountain man or buckskinner worth his possibles bag has owned one of the Hawken replicas from Thompson-Center or CVA at some point.
