When it comes to selling books, authors need to do this...⤵️

There is a lot (and I mean A LOT) of competition for attention online.

This isn't just with other books - this is with movies, YouTube, social media, TV - you name it!

So when it comes to marketing our books, we can't be general.

We can't assume that readers will buy based on the fact that you simply say that you have a book available.

They need to know WHY they should pay attention and buy.

And one of the biggest ways that you can get their attention and make your marketing stand out is to tap into the EMOTIONS of your ideal readers.

Harvard professor and author of the book, "How Customers Think: Essential Insights into the Mind of the Market," Gerald Zaltman, did a very complex study on why customers buy certain products over another and boiled it down to this:

"Emotion is what really drives the purchasing behaviors, and also, decision making in general." 🤯

For example, if you only market the attributes of your book you will get lackluster results.

Humans are driven by feelings.

So if you want your readers to remember your book and author brand, they must be engaged and impassioned by the interaction with your book and with you as the author.

If you're afraid of "giving too much away" from your book before the release date, this is for you!

When I tell authors that they need to talk about their book on social media, they usually respond with...

😱 what if someone steals my idea?

When someone said this very thing in my comments, another author responded by saying, "I already have a ton of book ideas - why would I take an idea from someone else?"

You're not sharing a bunch of details or going too deep with it.

What I would challenge you to do is to think of descriptive words that will help spark interest. What is the "essence" of your book? What other books, movies, TV shows are similar or are in the same vein?

Don't let the fear of "what ifs" hold you back from setting up your book. 😊

I told this to a client a few years ago. He was a debut author and he kept comparing himself and his books to James Patterson. ⁠

Of all people! ⁠

I told him, "You can't compare your beginning to another author's journey. James Patterson has been writing for decades! He's grown an audience longer than you've been alive! Stop!" ✋ ⁠

This can apply to anyone at any stage of their writing career. Whether that be comparing the size of your audience, what you're doing marketing wise, how many books you've sold - it doesn't matter. ✨⁠

We are all at different phases of our journey. Look to other authors as inspiration, but not as a measuring stick. ⁠

Stay the course and keep at it! ❤️😊📚⁠

When I'm writing something I always try to picture the look of relief, joy, or excitement on a reader's face when they finally discover what they were looking for. ✨⁠⁠
⁠⁠
I always try to anticipate that because I know how it feels to FINALLY find something that answers a question, that checks off all the boxes, or fills you with such anticipation that you can hardly stand still. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
But for whatever reason, we tend to believe the nagging or negative voices in our heads that say, "Who would want to read this? Is anyone even going to see it?" Why do we tend to lean towards the negative rather than the positive? Is it easier? Maybe. But does it make that statement true? Not at all. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
I'm a big believer in the fact that there is an urgency or calling placed inside of us with a story or message that we HAVE to share with the world. It's a feeling of "If I don't get this out I'm going to bust wide open!" There is a purpose to those feelings. It's not just for you - it's for the people who will read it as well! 📚⁠⁠

When you begin to get that nasty little voice in your head starting to question your book or your writing, tell it to take a hike. Picture in your head the look on your readers faces when they discover your book - it's just as much for them as it is for you! 😊⁠⁠
