The year was 1957, and Elvis Presley was riding high! James R. Cavender took a change in Pittsburg, Texas, opening a Dairy Mart, which ultimately launched a successful entrepreneurial career and fulfilled his American dream. James took another chance just eight years later when he opened Cavender & Smith’s, a retail Western wear business for men and boys. Shortly thereafter, James bought out his partner and history was now in the making for the newly renamed Cavender’s. Almost 60 years and 100 stores later, Cavender’s has become synonymous with the well-dressed Texan.

Jesse was a big, barrel chested, fun loving cowboy and generous to a fault. When a rodeo hand went broke or was injured, Jesse, if he had it, was the first to dig down into the pockets of his jeans. He taught the tricks of the trade to many of the then up-and-coming bronc riders, including the late Norman Cowan, who became a long time big name bonc rider, roper and ‘dogger.

During the time of wild, unorthodox exhibition rides in rodeo, Jesse Stahl made his contribution by riding a ba****ck bronc backwards.

Dr. Robert M. Miller, DVM, was a renowned large and exotic animal veterinarian and equine behaviorist. Dr. Miller was a contributor to Western Horseman since 1949 as a writer and cartoonist. He changed the world of horsemanship and has received dozens of awards and achievements including the Western Horseman Award in 2012. Dr. Miller will be deeply missed by many but his legacy will continue to live on.
