Today was my last day with The Journal Gazette. I am so grateful for all that I’ve learned, the friends that I’ve made and the chance to tell stories in Fort Wayne. Thank you to everyone who allowed me to share their stories and the people who took the time to read them. Connecting with people here and learning from them has been an honor and a privilege that I don’t take for granted. As for what’s next, I’ll be sharing that next week after spending some much needed time with my family, friends and Ozzy! Stay tuned!

A few months ago I started looking into Allen County’s Black homicide victimization rates after receiving a report that showed Indiana had the third highest Black homicide victimization rates in the nation in 2020.
I found that 250 of Allen County’s 403 homicide victims in the last decade were Black, despite only about a tenth of the county’s population being Black. Through local and national statistics, I was able to learn more information about the causes of death behind these homicides.
But, more importantly, I was able to learn more about the victims themselves and the factors that may be contributing to the deaths of many of Allen County’s Black homicide victims.
That being said, I’m looking forward to seeing this story in print in this weekend’s The Journal Gazette. A big shoutout to the folks who took the time to talk with me for this story and allowed me to share their experiences, as well as my editors and coworkers who supported my efforts.
Coming Saturday ▸ Homicide is the third most common manner of death for Black people in Allen County. The Journal Gazette looks at the factors behind the disproportionate homicide rate in the Black community.
