UPDATE ON BURTON PARK CLOSURE LAST NIGHT:
🚨Detectives Arrest Juvenile for Robbery with a Firearm🚨
On February 4, 2025, Cape Coral Police responded to a reported robbery near a residence in Northeast Cape Coral, Florida. The incident involved the theft of an electric scooter at gunpoint by a suspect, later identified as 13-year-old Jiovanni Peguero (DOB 06/22/2011).
A child under the age of 12 was playing outside with their scooter when Peguero approached them, requesting to try out the scooter. After the child denied Peguero's request, Peguero displayed a black handgun tucked into his waistband. Fearing for their safety, the victim allowed Peguero to ride the scooter. Peguero then fled the scene with the scooter, valued at $400.
After watching Ring camera footage, an officer identified the suspect as Pegeuro from prior interactions. Officers went to Peguero's home and spoke with his guardian, who confirmed he had run away hours earlier.
While officers were talking to Peguero's guardian, a second call was made to the police regarding Peguero, who was seen threatening another child at Burton Park. Peguero was detained by multiple concerned fathers, and a loaded handgun was found in his waistband, matching the handgun described by the first child. Officers quickly arrived on scene, and Violent Crimes Unit Detectives were able to determine that Peguero was involved in two different scenes involving a firearm.
Jiovanni Peguero was arrested, taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center, and charged with the following:
--1 count in violation of F.S.S. 812.13(2)(a), Robbery with a Firearm, a Felony of the First Degree
--2 counts in violation of F.S.S. 790.22(3), Minor in Possession of a Firearm
--2 counts in violation of F.S.S. 790.10, Improper Exhibition of a Firearm
--1 count in violation of F.S.S 784.021, Aggravated Assault
