I'm realizing the necessity of active decision-making in the mountains. Sometimes you get lucky, but if you count on luck you won't live long.
I've made 3 excursions to this area, and had to turn back from the objective twice due to avvy risk. Maybe next time!
๐ŸŽฟ
Makes you appreciate just being out in God's beautiful creation though ๐Ÿ˜Š

I'm so proud of my wife - she came from the plains, bought a pair of skis last year, and skied 12 consecutive months - capping it all off by attempting Mount Elbert with me this month! (Tallest mountain in Colorado)
๐ŸŽฟ
We're glad to be done chasing a goal, it was fun but I think it'll be more fun to just enjoy backcountry skiing whenever we want to - summer or winter!! ๐Ÿ˜

Spring skiing is great and all, but having to walk a mile back to the car is never ideal, especially going on the 11th hour of the excursion.

You can see the desperation in my eyes (and the sunburn on the rest of my face).

Goal Completed!! Saturday's attempt at Mount Elbert (tallest in Colorado) was:
- Evangeline's 12'th consecutive month of backcountry skiing, one full year and a goal complete for us both!
- My 14th consecutive month of BC skiing.
- Her first 14er attempt
- My second 14er attempt, but first on skis!
- 3 years from the day of our first hike together when we started dating!
- 11 hours, 10+ miles, 4,300ft elevation gain
โ›ท
We reached 14,069' - didn't summit but I'd call it a success since we were there to enjoy the day and were wise enough to turn back for our own health and safety.
๐Ÿ˜
How wonderful it is our God not only loved us enough to give us grandeur and beauty, but gives us life through his Son. And what a wonderful life it is - all glory be to Christ!

We're moving to New York!
๐ŸŒจ
(in honor of April Fools, just needed an excuse to share the only photos I took of our trip to the Adirondacks in early March)
I don't think we could handle not having 300+ days of sunshine a year, like we do here in Colorado.

Where are you making turns this weekend??
โ›ท
This is on the North Pole couloir above Arapahoe Basin Ski Area. The collection of couloirs on Abasin's East Wall are a fun way to get acquainted with skiing steep, technical terrain without the worry of backcountry avalanches, since they actively mitigate and assess the conditions. Getting to the couloirs is a thrilling, fairly short hike along a knife edge ridge, which I'll show in a fuller video soon!
โ„
Always fun to have a group of friends to do it with too!

(and what looks like a cool trick but is actually just me with not enough speed/air for the trick I intended.)

Spring skiing is upon us, and there's still plenty of time left in the season to shred if you go to the right place! Arapahoe Basin Ski Area is my (and most others') favorite spring spot.

Its always fun to see and ski with familiar faces, in one of my favorite places!

Woke up at 3:55am Saturday to beat the ski traffic to Winter Park. Needless to say we did not beat it and turned around by 6:30, changed plans, and decided to check off our backcountry ski day for March! ๐Ÿ˜Ž We officially have 1 month left to accomplish 12 consecutive months of backcountry skiing. Stay tuned.

The last skijor competition in the West is this weekend - I didn't go into the winter expecting to get anywhere near these events, but now I'm sad I didn't sign up for another!

Super grateful I happened upon Saratoga Skijoring this winter, as I'll definitely be there again - and you should too!

My niece is a big fan of skiing, obviously.
She had a blast, and kept yelling at us to go faster!

All fun and games until she got cold, though.

This was by far the best part of our BC ski excursion, mainly because the rest was so terrrible.

On Saturday we explored a new area, and learned a lot ... more than we wanted to know! ๐Ÿ˜‚
These were the highlights, but due to my lack of planning and research, our route back to the car turned into a true adventure, boot packing around avalanche terrain, navigating super variable snow, and side-slipping/bushwhacking through dense forest. ๐ŸŒฒWhat was originally supposed to be a 4ish hour trek turned into a nearly 7 hour slog. I laid in the parking lot for several minutes in celebration and exhaustion before dusting a bag of chex mix.
