The Foley High School gymnasium buzzed with excitement during the Sept. 26 homecoming pep fest. Students sat on the edge of their seats as staff members prepared to unveil the new face of the Foley Falcons.

Then, Flash, a bright blue Falcon with “Foley” written in bold lettering across its shirt, burst into the room as the student body erupted in applause. The school’s new mascot ran across the gym, extending a wing to high-five admirers reaching out from the bottom row of the bleachers.

After ending their season in the section finals the past few seasons, the Foley Falcons are finally champions.

In a battle of top-ranked Class A programs, the fifth-ranked Falcons took down No. 2 Minnewaska Area by a score of 4-3 in the Section 6A championship.

All three Falcon doubles teams came away victorious, while Lydia Anderson clinched the title with a win at No. 2 singles.

Foley advances to the Minnesota State High School League Class A Girls Tennis State Tournament, which begins Tuesday, Oct. 21 at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Congratulations, Falcons, and good luck at state!

Through two possessions, homecoming was not going as planned for the Foley Falcons football team.

Apollo High School pulled a trick play out of its hat on the first play from scrimmage, with one of the wide receivers throwing for a touchdown only 20 seconds in. When the Falcons received the ball for their first possession and a chance to respond, they stumbled, unleashing a backward pass that the Eagles happily jumped on.

Suddenly, the third edition of the “Butcher Bowl” was setting up to be a potential spoiler opportunity for the Eagles, who have not won the traveling trophy against the Falcons yet in the rivalry series.

The Kantor family’s relationship with tennis began with humble beginnings, stepping valiantly into the unknown by participating in camps and tournaments at the youth level.
