Fort Liberty Officer Sentenced to 3 Years for Multi-Million Dollar Equipment Theft Scheme

๐Ÿ—’๏ธ FORT LIBERTY, NC โ€“ Chief Warrant Officer Three (CW3) Christopher Hammond, 38, has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for his role in a scheme that involved the theft and sale of military equipment, netting him at least $2 million. In addition to the prison term, Hammond has been ordered to pay $250,000 in restitution and forfeit another $250,000.

๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป Scheme Details

Hammond, who served with B Company, Group Support Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), used his position to requisition military equipment intended for his unit. Instead of logging the gear into inventory, he sold it, earning substantial profits.

๐Ÿ’ต Prosecutors revealed that Hammond, along with his wife, Major Heather Hammond, conducted a four-year scheme to divert military supplies for personal gain. The couple moved $1.8 million in profits through multiple USAA and Schwab Brokerage accounts, some in Heather Hammondโ€™s name.

๐ŸŽธ Equipment Involved

Between December 2018 and March 2023, Christopher Hammond ordered various military and non-military items, including:

โ€ข Lower and upper receivers, gun barrels, gun bolts, and firing pins (components to build rifles)
โ€ข Scopes, gun cases, and holsters
โ€ข Electric guitars, bayonets, a sword
โ€ข Tools, welding gear, gym equipment
โ€ข Night vision goggles, all-terrain vehicles

Hammond falsely claimed the equipment was for his unitโ€™s upcoming deployment in communications with suppliers.

๐Ÿš” Investigation and Arrest

The scheme was uncovered when a supplier noticed items procured under government contracts were being sent in for warranty repairs by private individuals. A search of Hammondโ€™s home led to the seizure of:

โ€ข 98 fi****ms
โ€ข 90 military-issued spotting scopes
โ€ข Hundreds of military accessories and night vision goggles
โ€ข Over $100,000 in cash

Around 200 items sold by Hammond were traced back to his unit.

๐Ÿง‘โ€โš–๏ธ Legal Proceedings

Hammond pled guilty to multiple charges, including theft of government property, wire fraud, money laundering, mail fraud, and transportation of stolen goods. He was convicted of an additional count of money laundering and aiding and abetting by a jury.

Major Heather Hammond, who faced similar charges, was acquitted by a jury.

๐Ÿ‘€ Community Notice

Residents of Fort Liberty and the surrounding areas are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to military property.
