On July 23, 1973, Officer John W. Ruggiero was shot and killed while investigating a suspicious vehicle on Boutwell Street at 3:30 am.

He had observed the car driving without lights and began to follow the car. The vehicle pulled into a parking lot and two men jumped out and ran towards Officer Ruggiero's patrol car while shooting at him. The suspects, 26 and 34, were apprehended a short time later. The youngest was sentenced to life.

Officer Ruggiero was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the Fall River Police Department for almost three years. His son, Sergeant John P. Ruggiero is an active member of the Fall River Police Department.

Our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family of Retired Fall River Firefighter Ray Ferland, Ready was a close and dear friend to many of us here at Metro Fall River Fire Alerts and a brother to many Fall River Firefighters. Our hearts are heavy with sadness and sorrow to learn of the his passing. Ray will be missed dearly by many.

PUBLIC SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT!

Station 1 is CLOSED again today Saturday, July 6, 2024.

For the few that do not know…. by closing station 1 this means;

• Car 3, Rescue 1, Engine 1 and Tanker 1 are placed out of service and are unstaffed.

•The only trucks that are staffed are Rescue 2 and Engine 3 OR Ladder 2 and Engine 3.

• Potential Delays for medical emergencies that will take about 15-20 minutes or more for residents and longer for surrounding communities.

• Potential Delays for Fire suppression that will take about 17-23 minutes or more for residents and longer for surrounding communities.

Time is critical when it comes to fires and serious medical emergencies. It’s the difference of life and death. Safety and lives are on a timeline and should not be gambled with. This is your Fire Department, how would you like it to run?
