For Architects and Builders of Distinctive Homes

We are an award-winning national publication dedicated to informing, inspiring, and elevating the custom residential architecture and construction professions. We are an award-winning national publication dedicated to informing, inspiring, and elevating the custom residential architecture and construction professions. Among our sister publications

are Qualified Remodeler and Kitchen & Bath Design News, also longstanding leaders in the professions they serve. We are all part of SOLA Group, Inc. Creating something as important as someone’s home is more than a trade, it’s a calling. The architects and builders who answer that call share a special passion for the work and it drives all that you do. We’re here to fuel that passion and to provide the high-level, substantive information you need to make your clients’ individual dreams come true. We believe that “design” isn’t just a noun, it’s a verb—an ongoing effort among all the pros involved in a custom residential project. That’s why we focus on more than just pretty pictures of pretty houses. We love houses, too, and we show the best. But we also care about how the pros, the process, and the products align to perfect form and faciltate function. We’re committed to providing indispensable insight and expert guidance into the practice of residential architecture and construction—online and in print. We have a national residential architecture design competition, judged by an independent jury of architects, that recognizes excellence in custom residential design. The RDAA competition is part of our mission to elevate and support the profession. Each year, winners are published in full in the print edition of the magazine and recognized at a in-person event, in keeping with the importance of the professional achievement the awards represent. Our print edition is published six times a year. And our newsletter is published twice a month. If you would like to receive both the print magazine and the newsletter, please subscribe at ResidentialDesignMagazine.com/Subscription-Page.

Case Study: OFFbeat by Nick Deaver Jes Deaver Architecture

Vultures and at least one fox were living in this storybook house in Austin’s Travis Heights neighborhood when Jes and Nick Deaver’s clients first saw it. Having been derelict for a decade, its renovation was an unlikely choice for a retired couple looking to build a modern house on an infill lot. Until, that is, they met the Deavers.

Case Study: Wallingford by Prentiss Balance Wickline Architects

Although the Seattle family with three young children loved life on the water in their lake house, they longed to develop strong ties with a community. They found a 50-foot-wide by 120-foot-deep infill lot in Wallingford, a tight-knit neighborhood in north central Seattle, and reached out to local firm Prentiss + Balance + Wickline Architects to create a home that would engage with the street front and neighborhood greenway running through their backyard.

Louise, the original owner of this home, “was a philanthropist who entertained, and her husband was an ophthalmologist. It was a wacky house that was personal to this couple,” says VJAA partner Jennifer Yoos, FAIA, whose firm the new owners hired to renovate it over a 10-year period.

Perched on a bluff and completed in 1969, the 5,900-square-foot house was designed in the Brutalist style, with strong massing and geometries, concrete retaining walls that wrap it, and a garage embedded in the hill.

Valley Estate by Anacapa Architecture • Citation • 2024 RDAA •Custom on the Boards

Valley House’s linearity and vertical layering was inspired by several Richard Serra sculptures owned by the clients, who are big art collectors. “We wanted the walls to be rooted in the landscape and even be conveyed as somewhat of a ruin, as if it’s been there a long time,” says Tony Schonhardt, AIA, director of design.

Dunelands by dSPACE Studio • Citation • 2024 RDAA • Architectural Details

One of the chief talents good architects have is the almost miraculous ability to conquer the “unbuildable sites.” This scenic property overlooking Lake Michigan had languished for some time, caught between its physical and code constraints and potential buyers’ programmatic needs.

“It’s a protected national dune, and there was just one spot to put the house,” says Kevin Toukoumidis. “We were left with a very small footprint—on top of a flat dune where one side drops down 60 feet to the lake.”

Redivivus by Robert M. Cain, Architect • Citation • 2024 RDAA • Residential Special Constraints

Robert M. Cain’s firm has a history of saving endangered buildings. And this is one of its most successful rescues so far. The small midcentury apartment building was on the brink of demolition when project architect Carmen Stan, AIA, ran across it while walking her dog.

Pivoting by Mode4 Architecture • Citation • 2024 RDAA • Custom Outdoor Living Design

“Pivoting refers to the doors on this addition and remodel, but it was also a response to the pandemic and how we use outdoor spaces,” explains architect Christopher Tucker, AIA. “We had to stop and pivot in a different direction on this project. At first, we had designed a more interior space.”

Hillview Cove by Studio AR&D Architects • Citation • 2024 RDAA • Architectural Interiors

Every interior decision at Hillview Cove was made in service to a calming environment. The architects interpreted that client request with just a few visually striking materials and cutaways that wash them with light.

“The details were about wanting to have less fussiness, at least in their appearance. Just calm and simple and clean,” says Sean Lockyer, AIA.

The Roost by Furman + Keil • Citation • 2024 RDAA • Custom Outdoor Living Design

Our judges called The Roost “a beautiful pavilion.” Located at the bend of a tributary of Lake Austin, it replaces a moldering boathouse that contained an illegal apartment. The waterway, which is often stagnant, swells during periodic downpours and floods its banks, along with anything else nearby, until the Lake Austin dam is opened. Stormwater sweeps debris along its path, depositing a good deal of it right at this bend. The clients came to Furman + Keil for a replacement structure that would remediate the natural water flow issues and provide them with an elevated platform for lounging and birdwatching.

4015 Studio by Observation Studio • Citation • 2024 RDAA • Custom Accessory or Outbuilding

“This is a really lovely backyard ADU,” a jury member said. “I like how it’s sited and what they did with the roof to create a wonderful space for music” on the mezzanine. After renovating the client’s Midcentury Modern house during the pandemic, the architects were called back to design a work-from-home studio in the backyard.

“The house has a lot of covered porches; we wanted to re-vision that experience in the studio,” says Chris Brown, AIA. The upstairs portion cantilevers over the front door, and the building’s window placements “create an almost prismatic geometry,” Chris says.

A north window points into the tree canopy, while a lower south window faces the family play structure. “You can see through the building south to north, creating a periscope for viewing the tree canopy.”
