The Bunk+Brew Historic Lucas House in downtown Bend has been acting as a landing pad for travelers and seasonal workers since its inception.

Each Bunk+Brew employee is – somewhat – seasonal. Employees work three shifts a week to cover their rent, and are required to stay for a minimum of only three months. The hostel culture puts an emphasis on the “Dirtbag” lifestyle, as it’s described by each and every employee who comes through the revolving door. Dirtbag, as a term, encompasses the idea of living for the experience.

The University of Oregon Veterans Center may be small and tucked away, but it’s a place where veterans and their families find solace, support and unity. Beyond the complex paperwork and hurdles of accessing benefits, this center acts as a transition hub and decompression zone for those who have served.

Veterans often face isolation on college campuses due to an age gap and differing life experiences. With its dedicated team and opportunities like the Veterans Outdoor Club and mental health resources, the Veterans Center goes beyond answering G.I. Bill questions — it fosters community.

While the outdoor world has increased its focus on accessibility, many women, gender-nonconforming and transgender students still find themselves intimidated by male-dominated bike shops and communities. The UO Outdoor Program’s Winter 2023 Femme, Trans, and Womyn Identified Folk’s (FTW) Bike School seek to change that.

University of Oregon junior, Kyle Trefny, began firefighting with an Oregon-based wildland fire and forest restoration company in the summer of 2021. After extinguishing a fire in Eastern Oregon, they traveled to Montana and remained for nearly 50 days — short-handed and underequipped. Trefny remains intimately fused to wildfire but is actively working to transform how fire management operates on a national scale.

Trefny collaborated with fire-focused leaders to develop the FireGeneration Collaborative (FireGen). The group presented a vision to the United States Forest Service (USFS), the Department of Interior (DOI) and other government officials. Their ask is to provide young people, particularly those from Indigenous and other marginalized communities, with the space to influence wildfire policy-making. Recognizing the colonialism, patriarchy, militarism and exploitative capitalism embedded in the fire suppression complex, FireGen wants to instigate ideological change, trailblazing the way to a future where society can coexist with fire.

As a division of the Oregon Booster Association, the Daisies is a volunteer organization made up of primarily retired women in their 70s, 80s and 90s. They’re bonded together over their love for the Ducks community.

Today, they contribute to the University of Oregon Athletic Department in countless ways, through funding, mentoring and caring. Some of their efforts include providing snacks for all athletes, cheerleaders and band members during games, and selling bingo tickets at men's basketball games to raise funds for athletic scholarships. They also partake in small yet thoughtful tasks like sending personalized birthday cards to athletes. On June 1, 1921, 35 city blocks of the affluent Black community, Greenwood District, were left looted, charred and destroyed by white rioters in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in what is known as the Tulsa Race Massacre. 2021 not only marked 100 years since the massacre, but it also marked a time focused on racism in America. Born in 1956, Bennie Jordan and his family history are intertwined with centuries of racism in America. His grandmother was born enslaved and his grandfather was killed in the Massacre.

Bennie travels all over the country for his work collecting signatures for petitions. Regardless of where Bennie travels to share his story, there is some history of racism and harm that remains unaccounted for. Examples of reparations programs in America are few and far between, while stories like Justice for Greenwood’s lawsuit and SB 619, which mark the ongoing fight towards accountability for continued harm, are much more common.

The Cedar Creek Fire started on Aug. 1, 2022, caused by a series of lightning strikes that touched down about 15 miles east of Oakridge, Oregon, igniting a dense section of the Willamette National Forest. Locals were fearful throughout the burn season, and it took the whole village to fight the fires.

Chelsi Corcoran-Rhule wanted to uplift the community and give everyone a night to remember when the smoke finally cleared, so she put together "Blue Moon Burlesque." Many locals performed in the show to boost morale, including Erika Stalcup who used this performance to heal after serving as a volunteer firefighter during the fire.

Overworked, underpaid and understaffed, teachers are constantly fighting an uphill battle through the school year. According to RAND Corporations – a nonprofit research organization dedicated to helping improve public policy challenges – 59% of teachers experience burnout and 73% of teachers experience frequent job-related stress.

During the pandemic, teachers were doing their jobs over Zoom, trying their best to give their students the best education possible. Being back in-person has brought challenges some teachers weren’t prepared for.

The McKenzie River Trust is a nonprofit with the purpose of protecting wildlife in Western Oregon. Along with the support of volunteers, executive director Joe Moll has been fighting to protect the land of Green Island for over 15 years. The land trust has worked to restore the land by planting over 650,000 native trees and shrubs and connecting the land’s channels back to the river by removing thousands of feet of levees.

Implementing new strategies in an attempt to limit climate change is one of the trust’s main goals. It incorporates the environment and modern engineering to provide clean water and protect ecosystem functions. The trust is also working to restore Native tribes’ ownership of the land purchased on the coast.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by Black people and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. It honors all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today. It’s a powerful reminder that Black stories are the ongoing story of America.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women only make up 10% of the truck driving industry. It’s a small but growing population of women who travel coast to coast delivering vital goods to Americans.

Women in Trucking is a nonprofit organization that connects female truckers from across the United States. The organization sets out to encourage and welcome women into the trucking industry while giving them a platform to promote their accomplishments and a community to fall back on.

Fall Creek Farm and Nursery is nestled just outside of Eugene in the rolling hills of the Willamette Valley. The farm is responsible for producing an average 35 million blueberry seedlings a year that have been transplanted across the globe to be grown into fully fledged blueberry plants for commercial purposes.

From its roots as a sustainable, family-run farm, Fall Creek has expanded into Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, Soan and South Africa and has touched blueberry crops across the globe.

The exhibit was created to engage UO students in conversations about race, identity, representation and misrepresentation. It provided students with a space to create art and hold a dialogue about their experiences and fears as they navigate their lives as young adults.

Less than 5% of the 30 million U.S. businesses are q***r-owned. Stingray Botanicals, a q***r and Latino-owned houseplant shop on Willamette Street, sets its sights on becoming a safe space for everyone. A rainbow sticker on the front window says “You belong here” and a pride flag hangs from the ceiling inside, making the businesses’ values clear.

Stingray Botanicals is Oregon’s first houseplant shop to become a certified and registered Benefit Company, meaning they put their values upfront and practice them on a daily basis. The store donates to and partners with different organizations to show their support for causes — especially LGBTQ+ issues — that are important to them.

The produce is thoroughly checked by volunteers to ensure it’s still safe to eat and is stored in refrigerators and pantry spaces at Sonrise Church. In a sprawling city, it’s difficult to meet every accessibility need that people desire in public transportation. Many American cities, including Eugene, plan transportation in a way that prioritizes cars as the fastest and primary mode of transportation, but not everyone has access to this form of private transportation.

Lane Transit District (LTD) has various accessibility features in place to offer public transportation services to those that depend on its services. Though its services towards seniors and disabled riders have accessible aspects, other riders desire further improvements. Several online forums complain that there aren’t frequent enough stops or that the intersectionality between routes is inefficient.

On June 24, 2022, community members Bre Lynn and Monica Little led a march through the streets of Eugene. Their action was a response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade — the Supreme Court decision that made abortion a constitutional right under the 14th Amendment’s due process clause.

Oregon sits in a unique position as a sanctuary state, meaning that despite the Supreme Court decision, Oregon lawmakers are passing bills and providing funding to protect the right to abortion within state lines. The commitment serves to protect in-state residents’ right to safe and accessible reproductive healthcare, as well as out-of-state citizens’ rights to asylum and treatment.

After their march through the streets of Eugene, Lynn and Little organized a fundraiser called Abort the Court, where various speakers shared their experiences and frustrations with the crowd as they mingled with local vendors and activists.

From there, the Springfield Drifters, a summer baseball team made up of college athletes, was created. The goal of the organization is to encourage sports in the community and support local youth.

Two years ago, when Red Rooster Barber Shop was tucked on the corner of Kincaid Street and 13th Avenue, college students were at the heart of the business. Now, it sits empty. After more than four decades, Red Rooster was forced to move 16 blocks away from its original spot across from the UO Duck Store.

This story of translocation is just one of many on 13th Avenue. In recent months, longstanding local mom-and-pop businesses have left and the street is now lined with vacancies.
