"An angler begins to understand the mystique of the brook trout only after much trial. The waters where they dwell are near no paved roads or airports, hotels or strip malls. The dedicated fisher has to give themselves over to the solitude and remoteness of the trout pond. Only when they’ve tried and failed many times will their line go taut, and then they might reel the trembling fish to the surface to take in its color and beauty."

"Kristin Schild eyes the iceberg below her as the helicopter she's riding in makes a first pass, surveying the monolith from high above. Circling around for a second look, the helicopter swoops in much lower, barely skimming the surface of the ice. From this distance, Schild can check for erosion and direction of the water flow; both of these give her information about potential ice collapse or an iceberg overturning. The revolutions of the powerful propellers eliminate any other sound."

Stuart Steidle takes on a journey to meet Jim, the man who “helped the lab and the department become recognized as a place of excellent cartography because of his leadership and his work,” InfoGraphics Lab Production Manager Alethea Steingisser said. Steingisser assisted Meacham on three of the five major atlases of his career, all of which enjoy national renown from multiple wildlife, geographic, and publishing associations.
