It's that time again to honor our grads!

You only have to know a student who is graduating this year to participate. In the past, parents, grandparents, neighbors, family friends, neighborhood organizations, teachers and student peers have sent me information about graduates they’re proud of.

Here is what I need from you:

• The full name of the graduate.

• A headshot photo. Think senior picture or a selfie of the grad in their cap and gown.

• The high school the student is graduating from. The school must be located in Denver (or the graduate must live in Denver if attending a school outside of the city). Students who are homeschooled or attending an online/virtual school are welcome to participate.

• Their after high school plans, which can include college, the military, entering the workforce, gap years, etc.

• Quotes (please have the graduate answer one or both of these questions in a full sentence):

1) In your opinion, what makes the class of 2023 special and why?

2) What did you learn during your high school experience that you will take with you in your future endeavors?

Responses and photos can be emailed to me at: [email protected]. Feel free to call me at 303-566-4107 if you need help.

Our honoring grads feature will run in the June editions of Life on Capitol Hill and the Washington Park Profile. Your deadline is May 18.

Anyone with a loved one who is graduating knows it’s about the culmination of years of hard work. There’s a way, as a community, that we can honor those students. You only have to know a student …

Attention Denver-area college students! Colorado Community Media is asking for your help to gather data for a newsroom-wide special project!

The Long Way Home: A Colorado Community Media project on housing
Project overview: Colorado Community Media is working on a newsroom-wide project that examines the state of housing/the housing crisis in the metro area. The end result will be an in-depth journalism series, expected to publish online and in print in roughly two dozen local newspapers across the Denver metro area in early 2023. Colorado Community Media’s editorial staff has been divided into four reporting teams to look at different aspects of housing for the series:
• How did we get here? We’re establishing the problem and looking at causes.
• The human and community costs of housing insecurity.
• What is being done to address the housing crisis in our communities?
• The future of housing.
The survey: As part of the reporting that’s looking at the future of housing, Colorado Community Media is conducting an anonymous survey to learn how college students believe housing fits into the American Dream. The American Dream is defined as the belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of success in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone. Is owning a house still part of the American Dream?
Here is the link to the survey: http://tiny.cc/ccmhousingsurvey
Your responses are anonymous, and it only takes about five minutes to fill out the survey. But it would be a great help to us for our reporting on this important issue.

Any questions can be directed to: [email protected]

Thanks in advance!

A rare opportunity to see local artist Warren Stokes' maze art in person is available through August. Location is the Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado building, 600 S. Marion St. Pkwy. in Washington Park. It is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

Freedom. Gratification. Expression. This what local artist Warren Stokes gets from creating his maze art.

I remember I was working at a locally-owned restaurant in Aspen Park/Conifer when this happened. The restaurant was owned and operated by three brothers, who also ran an establishment -- I think it was a nightclub of sorts -- that was super close to the movie theater. It might have been a few doors down or within the same shopping complex. (I've never been there so I don't know the setup of the area.) The brother who was managing the restaurant that day was on his phone nonstop, checking in to ensure his brother who was to manage the nightclub that night was OK. Inside the restaurant, we were all glued to the television -- employees and customers alike. And heartbroken, trying to process what was happening before us.

How do you remember? Inside the theater, nothing is as it used to be. The splintered chairs are gone, replaced once and then again — now plush loungers with heated cushions, electric …
