Letter to my son on his 5th birthday!

Happy 5th Birthday Raazo!
I can’t believe you’re 5 now 😊

I write these letters to you each year, so that someday when you are older, you would know what I felt and what our lives were like at that time.

This year holds a special place in our hearts for so many reasons. Our big move to the UK has started making things better for us, unlike the past few years in Pakistan. Most importantly, you’ve started school, plus your communication & your ability to connect with others has grown beautifully. Your mom and I are both working now, we’re happy, but what fills us with the greatest joy is seeing YOU thrive.

So, you've just started reception school, having finished at nursery, and I couldn't be prouder of how far you have come. I know initially your speech and social skills were a little delayed, but it means the world to me to see how much you have improved - be speaking more, making friends, and able to take care of yourself. I am just so grateful for how you are growing up.

Even though we are doing well here, each day, we miss home (Gilgit-Baltistan) so much. The values of the place I grew up in are so dear to me, and I do hope you will always carry those with you. Compassion, gratitude, and warmth make us who we are; let us hope that you remember those values, and also learn to respect and live in this culture around us.

The life we live now is not the end of our struggles for a better life but helps us to start a new journey, with fresh challenges and opportunities ahead. As you grow, you'll face your own hurdles; I hope you meet them with the better strength and resilience than we have had to show.

I also want to make sure to let you know that this is okay; for now, you may not speak Shina. The most important thing is that you are expressing yourself in the way that feels right and convenient for you. I'm proud of you for that.

I wish you a life full of happiness, health, and success. Keep being that bright, kind, and wonderful boy.
