"The problem with bonds is that they operate in what we call an inverse relationship to interest rates. So as interest rates fall, bond prices rise. We’re losing some of the downside protection and we also still have ultra, ultra-low interest rates."

For decades, explains Joshua Bretl, it’s provided retirees a reliable mix of 60% equities and 40% bonds to protect against market downturns. But not so much anymore. Due to shifting interest rates and other factors, that gold standard formula is no longer a given.

What is the purpose of a bond? The purpose is to protect in a downside environment, and to provide decent interest rates. We're in a really weird time right now where interest rates are still really darn low.

And as interest rates rise, mathematically, the value of that bond has to fall.

So for years we've been looking for, what we call, bond alternatives. What can we do that can provide that same purpose inside of your portfolio, that aren't priced with an inverse relationship to interest rates?

Why start a separate page for the podcast? Because it will allow Joshua Bretl and Dave Schmidt to have more fun and do some things outside of the FSR Wealth page. i.e. I (Dave) can post even more random things than before.
