This is a photo from 1974 when the first extensive collection of Terracotta warriors was first discovered in Xi"an, Shaanxi, China…
The photo is remarkable because it reveals the original bright colours that were painted onto these life-size clay warriors more than 2,000 years ago by skilled artisans.
Unfortunately, when they were exposed to air and sunlight during the excavation, the colours began to curl up almost immediately and disappeared within minutes.

The Inner Gatehouse (Captain"s Tower) of Carlisle Castle in Cumbria, England, which leads into the inner ward where the keep is located. It was first built in the 12th century AD. The officer responsible for running the castle as a military unit used it as a residence, hence its name, Captain"s Tower. It was fronted by a moat, the remains of which can still be seen today. Below is the half-moon battery, which was built in the 1540s by Moravian engineer, Stefan von Haschenperg, during the reign of Henry VIII of England.
If enemy soldiers breached the walls of the outer ward they would have to cross another moat while taking fire from soldiers in the half-moon battery.
