Here are three reasons why long-term branding is still crucial:

1️⃣ Awareness & Loyalty

It would be best if you had a consistent advertising strategy to become the go-to source for a product or service in your community. Long-term branding, like advertising in a neighborhood magazine, is one of the most effective ways to build awareness and loyalty. People want to connect with brands that share their values and neighborhood magazines are perfect for creating those connections.

2️⃣ Organic Growth

Quick digital ads, coupon mailers, or postcards might get you a few new customers, but they can be expensive and unsustainable. For lasting growth, it’s important to brand your business consistently to keep your name top-of-mind in the community.

3️⃣ The Credibility Factor

Long-term awareness builds credibility. Think of big brands like Coca-Cola, Apple, and Amazon. They’ve earned their credibility over time by consistently being a part of your everyday life. By becoming a trusted name in your neighborhood, you’ll gain a competitive edge and grow your business.

I would love to discuss opportunities we offer to brand your business.

Our Feature Family this month has such a special story I had to share it again! Meet Ed and Erna. I promise you will be inspired.

From Tragedy to Triumph: How One Family is Spreading Joy in the Community
In the bustling heart of Seattle, where dreams are often nurtured amidst the towering pines, a story of unexpected romance began to unfold. Erna Naert, a dedicated nanny juggling her studies for a PhD, found herself at a lively party, surrounded by laughter and conversation. Little did she know that her path would cross with Ed Hiar, a charismatic young man who had recently left the Marine Corps with a date by his side. As sparks ignited during their fleeting introduction, Erna felt an inexplicable connection but was resolute in not interfering with Ed’s plans. Undeterred, Ed embarked on a mission to find the enigmatic woman who had captured his interest, scouring the phone book until he finally uncovered her number. Thus began a tale of persistence, passion, and the serendipitous twists of fate that would change their lives forever.
Erna at 34 and Ed at 29, respectively, found that they had a deep connection that blossomed into something remarkable. Without the traditional framework of marriage, they decided instead to continue living together and enjoying each other’s company. Their swift bond has not only transformed their daily lives but has also brought their families closer together. In a heartwarming twist, after only dating for 3 months, their mothers embarked on a trip together shortly after the meeting, further solidifying the ties between their families.
States away was Nicole, Ed’s sister who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Her wish for Ed and Erna to marry was not just a desire for a beautiful ceremony; it was her way of celebrating love amidst the fragility of life. As they embarked on this journey from Washington to South Dakota to marry, the family carried not just luggage but also the weight of Nicole’s health struggles, blending joy with a deep sense of urgency. The wedding day was filled with beautiful moments, laughter mingling with tears as family and friends gathered to support Nicole’s vision. Dressed in her Maid of Honor attire, she stood beside Ed and Erna—her spirit radiant even in the shadow of her illness. Nicole’s role as Maid of Honor was not just ceremonial; it was a final gift to her brother and to Erna, encapsulating her wish for their happiness. Thanksgiving, just the next day, was a time typically reserved for gratitude and togetherness, took on a new meaning that year. As they shared the feast, memories
filled the air, and the love swirling among them served as a warm embrace—an acknowledgment that even in the face of loss, there remains something to be thankful for: the bonds of family and the legacy of love. Just a few days later, the world dimmed as Nicole passed away, leaving behind a profound void filled with cherished memories. But her legacy continued to resonate with Ed and Erna, who honored her by holding onto the values she cherished—family, love, and the importance of living each moment fully.
This couple, deeply in love and now ready to start a family, embarked on a transformative journey of adoption—opening their hearts to two siblings longing for stability and love. They first learned about Christian, a cheerful four-and-a-half-year-old boy, whose captivating laughter drew them in. However, soon they discovered that Christian had an older sister, Kai, who was eight and equally deserving of a forever home. Realizing they couldn't separate the siblings, Erna and Ed courageously decided to adopt both children. The adoption process came with its challenges, but the couple remained committed, fueled by their desire to provide a nurturing environment. Finally, the day arrived when they were approved to adopt Christian and Kai. The initial meeting was an emotional whirlwind, filled with nervousness and hope, as the siblings met their new parents. Once home, Erna and Ed poured love into their family, establishing traditions. They created a warm environment, gradually breaking down the walls around the children's hearts. As time passed, they celebrated milestones together, turning experiences into cherished memories. Through this journey, Erna and Ed learned that family is not solely defined by blood but by love and connection. The bond they cultivated with Christian and Kai blossomed, proving the transformative power of adoption. Their story is a powerful reminder of the impact adoption can have—on both children and the families that love them. It showcases the beauty of compassion, courage, and the joy of building a forever family, highlighting that love can create unbreakable bonds that enrich lives for generations.
Growing up, Erna’s parents taught her to care for those around her. Her mother, a survivor of a concentration camp, often relied on neighbors' generosity, showing Erna that compassion matters. In 2010, everything changed when the software company that Ed had helped re-start was bought by Google. This new opportunity allowed them to give back even more to their community. Ed and Erna launched projects to support those in need, embodying their belief that true success comes from making a positive impact.
In the heart of Indiana, where memories intertwine with the landscape, the family made a pivotal decision in 2017 to return to their roots. This was not just a move; it was a homecoming steeped in nostalgia and family history. Ed reminisced about his youth, recalling the days he spent at Concord in his beloved goose hunting boots. Those memories were intertwined with his father's legacy, who had spent years working in the community. Upon their return, Ed found new purpose as an Engineer for Lippert Components. Meanwhile, their children began to carve their paths; Kai pursued higher education while Christian was navigating the complexities of high school. However, just as the family began to settle into their new normal, tragedy struck. Nine days before his 16th birthday, Christian's struggle came to a heartbreaking end with his su***de. The family faced an unimaginable grief that forever changed their lives. Despite this tragic loss, the family is determined to honor Christian's memory. They have become advocates for mental health awareness, emphasizing the importance of open conversations about mental health and supporting those in need. Their journey, though marked by sorrow, is also a testament to resilience and the indomitable spirit of family. They continue to navigate their path forward, carrying with them both cherished memories and the weight of their experience, as they strive to make their community a more compassionate place for others facing similar struggles.
In the wake of a heartbreaking loss, Erna and Ed transformed their grief into a powerful catalyst for change, dedicated to honoring their son, Christian. In August 2023, Ed and Erna found their calling with Toys for Tots, which quickly became a family mission. Working closely with the Marine Corps League and Grand Design, who provide essential year-round storage, they partnered with over 8 local agencies to amplify their impact. In just one year, this devotion yielded around 17,000 toys, brightening the holidays for approximately 2,700 children. Each toy symbolizes a heartfelt message of love and community support. Meanwhile, Ed has pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a history teacher with PRIDE Middle School, at Elkhart Academy, aspiring to inspire young minds and instill values of resilience and hope. Together, they are not only uplifting their community but also collaborating with The Toys for Tots Literacy Initiative to distribute books to children and schools, fostering a love for reading. Erna and Ed’s journey exemplifies the incredible strength of the human spirit. Their choice to uplift others in the face of adversity demonstrates that even in the darkest times, hope can blossom and create lasting change.
As we conclude this story, it’s essential to reflect not only on the profound loss that inspired such a powerful transformation but also on the remarkable spirit of resilience that has emerged from it. The tragic event that shook the community has become a catalyst for change, igniting a passion project that seeks to uplift those in need and foster connections among individuals who might otherwise feel isolated.
Through the dedication of countless volunteers and supporters, what began as a response to deep sorrow has blossomed into a beacon of hope. The initiatives, aimed at mental health awareness and community support, are a testament to how love and compassion can triumph over adversity. By providing resources, encouraging dialogue, and creating safe spaces for healing, this project honors the memory of those we’ve lost while forging a brighter path forward for others.
In closing, let us remember that from darkness can come light, and together, we can transform tragedy into meaningful action. For those seeking support or wishing to get involved, please reach out to Erna at [email protected].
Every effort, no matter how small, contributes to a collective healing journey. Together, we can create a community that shines with understanding, empathy, and hope.
