El Paso’s Pebble Hills High School marching band marched in the 136th Tournament of Roses Parade! Yay!

They were the first band from El Paso to be in the parade. Well done, Spartans!

El Paso’s first municipal Christmas tree was erected in 1916 in Pioneer Plaza, having arrived from the Sacramento mountains. The tree stood on a wide base of lumber built in the center of the Downtown plaza and supported by wires to prevent the wind from blowing it over.

Fast forward to more recent times. The San Jacinto Plaza 40-foot “living” pine tree was donated in 1998 by West Side resident Corrine Boyce in memory of her late husband, Charles.

It was damaged during the remodeling project of the plaza, but it survived.

Back in 1909 the National Humane Alliance donated this Animal Watering Fountain. The water flows from two lions mouths into a polished granite bowl. The upper bowl served as a watering trough for horses and mules and the four small cups at the base were for dogs and cats. This fountain has been in operation for over a century here in El Paso.

Have you noticed this beautiful historical pink building on El Paso Street in Downtown?
Notice the Franklin Mountains behind it.

The Hollands building was built in 1883 (see old photo), and it was the El Paso County’s first headquarters. In later decades it housed the Texas Furniture Company. It still has lots of its original beauty.

Have you seen this beautiful little building?

It is the Old B'Nai Zion Synagogue and it was completed in 1912, it’s located at 906 N. El Paso St and the structure exhibits a hybrid of Greek Revival and Gothic Revival influences.

It was El Paso’s first Jewish cultural community from 1912 to 1917 then from 1927 to 1934 and beyond it was St. Nicholas Greek church. Then in 1984 it served as a dancing studio and other social centers and church. Cool stuff!

Today marks five years that our city was racially attacked where we tragically lost 23 people at the Walmart shooting.

My heart goes out to the victims, their families and to the people that were present that day.

I’m sending light and healings vibes to anyone affected.

Cesar Inostroza is one of 3 artists that is adding vibrant art to the Healing Garden at Ascarate Park. His center portion part will be a 3-D Sculptural relief combined with Glass Mosaic touches . It will have different topics paying homage the August 3rd shooting victims. Cesar says that it will be a space to remember the victims but it will also be a place where people can come to heal themselves if they have a emotional distress or ailment of any kind. Here they can and find a small measure of peace.

Cesar is hoping that his 3D art mural image will make people stop and visit but when they come back a second or third time you will be aby to find different things in the art. He described that in the center it will have a lotus flower which represents purity, unity and knowledge. The entire mural will also be sprinkled with 23 glass mosaic glass doves which will represent the 23 victims. It will also have a hand holding a real bell, which signifies freedom. As he described freedom from your mind, freedom your negative thoughts and you will be able to actually ring it. On the left it will have a medical logo which reminds us to take care of our health. The other side will have a girl that represents purity with butterflies flying up from her hands which arepresents metamorphosis, from crawling to flying as Cesar described it.

You will also find that it will also have two bowls with flames in glass mosaic, Cesar said, the opposite side is very subtle and calm with water but on this side it will be very colorful and uplifting. The entire mural will have imagery representing Unity, Bi-Nationality and Healing. It will be finished by the August 3rd anniversary where you can see the final product. The magnificent Bank Eagle that stands on one side of the O.T. Bassett Tower (now the Aloft Hotel) in Downtown El Paso. Additionally, the Tower also has 10 eagles standing guard on the outside of the 15th Floor.

In this photo you can also see the vibrant ElectriCity sign that sits atop of the Martin Lofts which is reminiscent of the early 1900’s sign that used to read “Use Electricity” when the building used to be the EP Electric headquarters.
The Basset Tower is located at 303 Texas avenue and the Martin Lofts is at 212 N. Stanton St.

La Casa de Azucar (Sugar House) was lovingly created by Rufino Loya Rivas and his wife between 1973 and 1998 starting with a rounded brick archway which then led to window treatments, flower pots, angels plus much more.

It’s a must see at the corner of Leavell Street and Gateway South Boulevard.

A view of the El Paso Franklin Mountains!

More than likely named the Franklin Mountains after Benjamin Franklin C***s (1826-1892) a merchant who owned a ranch here back in 1849.

The Franklin Mountains were completely under water a couple of million years ago. Plants and animals that lived back then are now scattered around El Paso as fossils, especially in the mountains.

Some rocks are more than 1 billion years old, a time when hardly anything was alive in the oceans. If you look you can find shells, corals and brachiopods. Fun facts!
