Borderzine Non-profit news organization training student journalists & promoting diversity in the media industr from the borderline to the centerline.

Borderzine, reporting across fronteras, is a web community for Latino student journalists, a two-way bridge connecting the classroom and the newsroom. It creates an unprecedented national dialogue around issues of newsroom diversity and shifts the new voices, perspectives and experiences of Latinos in the U.S. Borderzine builds leadership in the media field by providing training in multi-media jou

rnalism to Latino students and opening doors to careers in English and Spanish news media through internships. Borderzine provides Latino students with a competitive edge to enter the news industry, and engages newsroom editors and top management in the process of helping to develop future newsroom talent leading to a more diverse news force. Mission
Borderzine’s mission is to address internship and job placement needs for Latino multimedia journalism students by being a major resource for news media recruiters looking to place interns and hire Latino news professionals. Borderzine is a publishing platform for young Latino journalists and a trusted source of news and information about under-represented border issues and Latino communities. Vision
Borderzine’s vision is to become a national model for achieving diversity in news media by creating a renewable pipeline of young Latino journalists for internships and jobs in English and Spanish news media, specifically trained to work in a multi-media environment.

In 2024 the Borderzine / UTEP MMJ program:
✅ Provided stipend support for 3 students to intern at the Dallas Morning News, KERA radio in Dallas and El Paso Inc.
✅ Gave stipends to 2 student city editors to gain leadership experience.
✅ Participated in two reporting collaboratives to help fill gaps in local community coverage. The latest, a Solutions Journalism collaboration exploring food insecurity in El Paso, is about to publish.
✅ Partnered with local and national groups on 2024 election coverage. Our Borderzine reporters interviewed El Paso voters for news spots that aired on KTEP-FM. Student journalism election coverage of the Borderland also ran on the National Community News Wire as part of the Elections & Democracy Reporting Initiative.
✅ Saw recent graduates land jobs with The Dallas Morning News, El Paso Inc., El Paso Matters, KFOX-TV, Univision, and KOKH Fox 25 Oklahoma.
✅ Launched a Drone Photography program that has trained more than 40 students so far
✅ Prepped our new multipurpose innovation studio for opening in spring 2025.
