The next phase of research for the Coale/Landon Theatre Organist Database has been completed, bringing the database to nearly 6,300 (!) records. In addition to many more organist entries, there are also many additional advertisements, articles, reviews, and photos added to previously-listed organists since the last update. Progress!

If you know of an organist from 1915-1935 who isn't listed, PLEASE send an email to me at [email protected] and include the name of the organist, any theatre names where they played, articles, photos, reviews, or any additional information you may have. THANK YOU!

Just a quick note to let you know that “Phase 2” of the Coale/Landon theatre organist database project has been completed. The database now holds over 5,300 entries!

Phase I involved inputting the hundreds of names/theatres that John Landon had accumulated over the years, adding to my existing database.

Phase 2 involved comprehensive newspaper searches to find articles/photos/reviews/advertisements for as many of the entries as possible. After many hundreds of hours of additional work, that part is now finished.

Phase 3 will involve completing targeted phrase searches (e.g. “new organist” searched by state plus major cities of each state, and “(brand x) organ” searched in the same manner) of US newspapers, hopefully adding more names/theatres to the database.

Phase 4 will involve digging into the hundreds of digitized movie/music trade journals of the era. This is very labor-intensive work, but will undoubtedly add names and citable materials to the database.

If you're not familiar with the name Arthur Martel, you should be. He was billed as America's highest-paid organist at one time, and played a plethora of theatres, mostly in the greater Boston area. Check him out in the ever-expanding database (now approaching 5,200 entries)! I'm also starting to add links to the corresponding theatre pages on the Cinema Treasures website. Enjoy!
