NEWS RELEASE 9/1/2022: IID extends Conserve Alert through September 7, encourages continued conservation
Due to current weather conditions and to help ensure the reliability of the electric grid, the Imperial Irrigation District is extending its current Conserve Alert through Wednesday, September 7, 2022.
An IID Conserve Alert encourages the district’s energy customers to remain cool while voluntarily conserving energy between the hours of 4-9 p.m.
IID’s extended alert comes at a time when California and the western U.S. are experiencing extreme heat that is putting strain on the electric grid with increasing energy demands, the issuance of a Flex Alert by the California Independent System Operator and a declaration by Governor Gavin Newsom of a state of emergency.
For the IID service area, earlier in the week the National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Warning that runs through part of next week with temperatures expected to reach 115.
Since the district’s issuance of its August 29, 2022 Conserve Alert, IID customers have done well and their efforts to conserve energy are greatly appreciated.
To conserve energy, IID suggests:
• Avoiding the use of major appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, pool pumps, charging of electric vehicles, applicable industrial equipment, etc.) between the hours of 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
• Setting thermostats at 78 degrees or higher when home.
• Turning off all unnecessary lights.
• Using floor or ceiling fans to cool off for less; (be sure to turn off fans when you leave a room as they only cool people, not spaces).
• Blocking the sun from overheating your home. Inside, use shades, blinds and drapes. Outside, use awnings, trees and shrubs.
