We had an amazing time celebrating the 100th anniversary! So grateful to be a part of such a historic foundation and pillar of the community. It was great if seeing friends we haven’t in awhile and spending time dancing with everyone! Looking forward to more to come next year 🖤

I struggled to find the words as I thought of what I could say to you all today. I thought about our future, our politicians, our children and the too many lives already lost to gun violence.

How can we plan for the rest of our lives when we can not even enjoy a movie, shop for groceries, heal in a hospital, go to a concert, or get an education without fear for them? Enough is enough. We’ve heard every excuse, every thought, every prayer, and yet still, there is no change.

So, this is when we take action. This is when we organize and mobilize to protect our future and our lives. We’ve elected politicians to create policies for the people that they serve and now, this is the people telling you that you must do better. We cannot wait for another week, month or year to pass life changing, life saving legislation.

There is power in action. There is power in change and there is power in the people and together, we March.

“Gloria Richardson, leader of the Cambridge, Maryland Nonviolent Action Committee (CNAC), was as tough as they come. “We can’t deal with her; we can’t deal without her,” bemoaned a white Citizens’ Council spokesman during the height of protests in the Eastern Shore city. Ebony magazine dubbed her “The lady general of civil rights.”

But Gloria Richardson did not emerge out of nowhere. A divorced mother of two, she was born in Baltimore, Maryland to a middle-class family with a history of local activism. They were the owners of grocery stores in Cambridge’s Second Ward, a predominantly Black community separated from the white neighborhood by Race Street. The men in her family were known as “race men,” who “worked to alleviate the oppression of poor black people.””

We are incredibly grateful to have facilitated these Youth Conversations on Race. Our teens learned how to embrace their own power and what they see as strengths about themselves by writing "I AM" poems. Here's an example of Heena's poem that she wrote about her own journey toward strength.
__
I am an Empowered brown woman
I understand that the world is too big to change alone
I worry about the climate, oppression and my family
I believe every interaction I make shapes me and every question I ask strengthens me
I hope I can stop the toxic cycle for myself and use my awareness for better
I am an empowered brown woman
I am determined and adaptable
I dream about eating foods that taste like the love they are prepared with
I wonder how the easy way is not always the best way
I try to find balance between everything
I want to live and learn
I am an empowered brown woman

We are creating a space for youth to talk about race, so racism is not perpetuated for more generations to come. The only way to end systemic racism is by awareness, empathy and dismantling. All this can begin with open conversations.

Racial justice is climate justice. We all have to interact with our surroundings but even with our environment, communities who suffer the most are BIPOC. We can’t go without seeing the very literal visual disparity in where POC live in the U.S. While BIPOC communities contribute to the least amount of environmental change, these communities suffer the most at the hands of environmental injustice. Listen in to our conversation with Wandra Williams and Hope Clark from Climatexchange Maryland as we talk about what can we do fight back and create a chance for the future.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! February may be the shortest month in our calendar year but it's packed full of love, celebration, and pride for our Black community!
Across the nation, we've seen people refuse critical race theory in our schools and try to erase Black history. It's time to teach our children AND adults what we mean by systemic racism. Black people will always be a crucial part of America's history, because there would be no America without Black enslavement. Black people are doctors, inventors, dentists, midwives, educators and so much more! There would be no culture without Black people. There would be no trends in fashion, social media, music, and dance without Black people.

That's why we celebrate the advancement Black people have made, along with the continued fight for racial justice and equity this month and every month. Take the time to embrace the culture and uplift a Black owned business!
