CHAPTER 8.

CALVIN

after exiting the school clinic , i met Peter. he looked very worried , i guess he heard already.

PETER: are you alright Calvin? you got me worried!

ME: it's okay , i am fine now.

PETER: no , it is not fine to me. i want to know what caused you to get one of those asthma attack and don't try to lie to me.

God! what am i going to say to him? I don't want him to do something stupid , because if i tell him that Dave is involved in the whole “ collapse ” thing , he might attack Dave or worse.

ME: okay , okay. i had flashbacks of past painful events of my life back when i was in grade 5.

PETER: oww! i guess this is about your grandfather , i am so sorry.

suddenly my eyes started to get teary , talking about my grandfather just brings a lot of sadness. i loved him so much , but time took him away. him and i used to go fishing together , hiking and hunting rabbits. it was fun , unfortunately , i lost him.

PETER: hey , don't cry! let's go to class , there's no one in there and that grants you the opportunity to cry freely.

i nodded , he walked with me to class and consoled me. Peter is an amazing friend, he knows how to comfort people and he is very empathetic. we just stayed in there.

FAST FORWARD , SCHOOL OUT.

i was walking with Peter , today he insisted on walking me home. i tried to tell him that i was fine , but he didn't take no for an answer i guess.

PETER: Calvin.

ME: yes Peter.

i answered , turning to him.

PETER: don't you miss Melissa? i know she betrayed us , but...

ME: [ interrupting him ] you miss her? i also miss her but she chose to her own way and there's nothing we can do to get her to come back to us. it's her choice to stay with us or leave Peter.

PETER: yeah , yeah.

we walked till we reached my destination , we fist-bumped and he went away. i could sense that he still couldn't get over the fact that Melissa ditched us and i really hate lying to him , it feels wrong but i don't want him to do something that he might regret later.

CALVIN

on my way to the toilet , i met Dave with Melissa. kissing violently against the wall. it's like they were going to make out , but i ruined the moment. Melissa's eyes widened in shock, while Dave's facial expression was neutral. So Melissa is a badass girl now , that's classic. i chuckled softly , went into the toilets , did my business and walked out. on my way out , i met Dave , both his hands tucked in his pockets. he has was messy , but suited him and the color of his hair really outlined the handsomeness of his face. he walked to me.

DAVE: i hope you are not going to tell anyone about what you saw back there.

ME: well i didn't see anything. mind explaining what i might have saw?

DAVE: don't try to act stupid with me , you know what you saw.

ME: as i have said , I didn't see anything and i need you to remind me of what i might have saw.

DAVE: S**T!!!

he got really angry and pushed me to the wall. i got really scared , slowly running out of breath. my vision started to get blurry. i tried to reach for my asthma pomp but i couldn't reach it in time. so i fell down and it was lights out for me.

FAST FORWARD

i woke up in the school's clinic. i saw a nurse entering , wearing a white shirt , with a blue color on its collar. her low heels clicking down on the polished floor . she walked up to me and smiled.

HER: how are you feeling?

ME: i feel okay.

HER: good , you were brought in by a boy named Dave. if it wasn't for him , you'd have died because you were not going to survive a long time without breathing.

so Dave is the good guy in all of this , he scared me , causing me to have an asthma attack and then bring me in here to look like a hero? i am getting sick and tired of him. he has done enough damage in my life , and i am really not up for anymore drama.

ME: yeah , i am very grateful.

HER: okay , you can go back to class now.

i stood up , and went out. i really cannot believe i had another attack because of the same jerk. i am going to ensure that he is going to live a bad life.

CALVIN

i woke up at 09:30 and my eyes were welcomed by the sun orange light, penetrating through the transparency of the window. i rubbed the sleep from eyes and swund my legs to the side of the bed , took my phone . surprisingly , i don't have a text from Peter , i mean he always text me. i placed my phone on the bed and walked to the bathroom. i took a 40 shower and walked out , drying my body with a white towel. after , i applied lotion on my body and wore my uniform , ensuring that i look great. the school is very strict. i took my bag and went downstairs , finding no one in the kitchen , i put down the backpack and searched the whole house to find mom or dad , but found none. i am sure they've already left for work , i took an apple and headed out.

[ AT SCHOOL ] FRIDAY MORNING.

i was walking with Peter when i saw a familiar person , i tried to remember who it is but i couldn't because i couldn't see the person clearly. i tried to keep my mind off the FAMILIAR guy .

Peter: [ clears his throat ] Calvin , what has happened to Mellisa?

Me: i also don't know , she just turned against us for popularity.

Peter: she was never a true friend.

Me: it seems so , because if she really was our friend , she wouldn't have abandoned us like a bag of rotten potatoes.

Peter: bag of potatoes? i think you are reducing the degree of what she did. she dropped us like a bag of faeces.

Me: [ laughing ] and you have over increased the degree of what she did.

we walked to the classroom , laughing the whole way. it is fun to a friend that is always there to keep your mind off many things to be honest. i still think about Dave , but i feel like i'm no longer into him. me getting admitted in the hospital many times was enough , i hated myself for crushing him so bad and i also hated myself ; for crushing so bad.

One week later.

The past week was hard for Calvin to accept that Dave will never notice him or fall in love with him . He had multiple asthma attacks , luckily he had his asthma pomp with him all the time , Melissa and Dave are madly in love , everyone at the school sbwl's their relationship and that was the reason that made Calvin move on , he swore he will never pour out his heart anyone again , he rather stay single. But on the other hand , it was bad , Melissa ever since she started dating Dave , she has been distant to Calvin and Peter because now she is a popular girl at the school. Find more info below 👇🏼.

[ CALVIN'S POV ]

I was sitting with Peter , having our usual light conversation , but all that changed as Melissa arrived , with her new friends.

Girl 1: Melissa how did you do it ?

Melissa: What?

Girl 1: how did you manage chilling with these people , I mean look at them . * Pointing at us *

The others laughed , as well as Melissa and that broke my heart . Peter stood up to answer them , but I held him.

Me: Peter, they are not worth it . Let's find another spot because this one seems to be loved by cockroaches.

Peter laughed , we took our bags and prepared to leave. I looked at Melissa and shook my head , in her eyes I saw a confused girl , changed by popularity. I mean she has changed , completely! She started attending parties , and drinking. I wonder if her father knows about this , he would literally kill her. But anyways , let me stay out of other people's businesses and focus on mine. We got to our spot and sat down.

Peter: Melissa we knew no longer exists , because this new version hae shap ( it's not good)

Me: yeah , but in life , we have to understand that everyone always changes and we will lose some people we love.

Peter took a deep stare at me.

Peter: when did you become so mature?

Me: * laughing a little* life experiences man.

We shared a little laugh.

We laughed again and continued with our convo.....

I am at the mall now , my mom has sent me to do some groceries , I was walking near shelves checking for some products on the list and , unaware , I bumped into someone. It was this guy , he is tall , seems harmless , I mean someone would have pulled a stunt already.

Guy : sorry about that * offering me a hand *

Me: I should be the one apologizing , because I wasn't paying attention to where I was going.

Guy: don't sweat it , I am Daniel Lopez.

Atseba haka kopa le lebitso la hae ( Yk , I never asked for his name) now I will have to give him mine too and I hate giving strangers my name.

Me: I am cater * I lied obv *

Daniel: okay , nice to know you Cater , will see you around.

Me: see ya.

He left , if he knew he will never see me again and I am glad that he didn't detect that I lied to him , I continued on with doing the grocery.
Now I am done , all that is left is for me to pay for the grocery and head back him. I am so drained and these are damn heavy , luckily there are trollies. It was my turn to pay , I lift everything as women kept scanning the products , and putting them aside , till she was done. I gave her the credit card , she swiped , gave it back to me and I entered the pin. Then I pushed the trolley to the taxi rank , I waited and waited , but no taxi arrived and this made me begin to worry because it's getting late and now chances of getting mugged are high. A strange car pulled over , the door opened and it was that guy... Daniel.

Daniel: Transport problems?

He said leaning on the car.

Me: No , I am sure a taxi will arrive anytime soon.

Daniel: let go of pride , no taxi will arrive at this time , let me put your things in the car and I will take you home, easy right?

Me: Thanks for the offer , but no thanks .

I waited and waited , but no car came. It was getting very dark by now. I looked at Daniel , leaning on his car or his parents'car , on his phone. He sighed and came to me.

Daniel: let me take you home , it's late , and your parents must be worried about you.

Me: wait , there is a taxi approaching by , told you a taxi will arrive.

I pushed my trolley to the car , as I was about to place the groceries in the taxi , Daniel went to the taxi driver. He took out cash and gave it to the taxi driver.

Daniel: thanks , but this one is going with me.

With that , the taxi left. I looked at him with a death stare .

Daniel: what?

Me: why did you do that?

Daniel: what?

He is stupid maybe.

Me: I didn't have energy for this.

He walked to me and started taking my stuff to his car.

Me : what are you doing? * Following him*

He just ignored me , till he loaded all the groceries in his car.

Daniel: hop in.

Me: no , not after what you did!

Daniel: * laughed * don't make me come to you , and place you in the car.

Me: you won't , I dare you.

[ CALVIN'S POV ].

Ntse ke nahana ka letsatsi Leo le kajeno( I am still thinking of that day even today ) it felt magical , he literally held my hand and asked for my name. I am on my way to school now , sekolo senale ho Bora serious ( sometimes school can be boring ) I mean it's consuming all the time I should be spending with Dave , ka dlala ( I am joking). Anyways , I arrived at school and went to my class. I got in , placed my bag on my seat and went outside to just stroll, I hope you are not thinking what I think you are thinking.

On the way I met Melissa , aska tlo mpotela enwa ka Dave ( this one mustn't talk nonsense about Dave) she came to me with the brightest smile and hugged me. I broke the hug and looked at her.

Melissa: guess what ?

Me: what? *Wondering*

Melissa: Today Dave o nferehile( today Dave hit on me )

My Jaw immediately fell , what is happening right now?

Melissa: I never thought horr wanrata hobane ona dula a sa nshebe hohang , le hanyane ( I never thought he loved me because he never looked at me even a little ) but today everything changed.

Me: * forcing a smile * keo thabetse , kannete ( I am happy for you , for real!)

I said that with a heavy heart , I can't believe that I wasted my feelings on someone who is straight , phela they don't always fall for us. I could feel my asthma rising , my eyes got red bloodshot , I started running out of breath. Modime onthuse ( God help me ) , then I collapsed.

Ke tsositswe ke lerata la mechini empota potileng , ke phamisitse hlooho yaka ho sheba ke hokae , ka thola horr ke ka spetlele ( I was woken up by beeping machine , I lifted my head to check where am I and found that I am in the hospital) a doctor got in. The doctor is a young man who seems to be in his 20's .

Doctor : hey ,oikutlwa jwang? ( Why do you feel )

Me: fine , but how did I end up in here?

Doctor : you had an asthma attack and you collapsed due to lack of breath .

Me: ohh okay.

I started remembering everything that happened.

Doctor : but now it's fine , we ran some tests and found out there is nothing wrong with you , you just need this * showing me asthma pomp* etlao thusa hao ha asthma eka kgutla ( it will help you if asthma attack happens again)

Me: okay doc.

Doctor : you must keep it on you every time , to ensure that if it strikes , you will help yourself.

Me: I hear you doc , jwalo letlo ntokolla neng? ( So when are you going to discharge me?)

Doctor: we are just going to keep you for a night.

Is he crazy? He said there is nothing wrong with me.

Me: Hobaneng? Witse haona letho le phoso Kanna ( why ? you said there is nothing wrong with me )

Doctor: retlameha ho etsa bonnete bahore ehlile haona le phoso ka wena( we have to ensure that there is nothing wrong with you ) and you will get discharged tomorrow if nothing happens. Bare with us , we are doing our job here.

I understood what he was saying , laid my head on the pillow and sighed. I cannot believe I ended up in a hospital because of a boy , this has to stop.

[ Melissa ]

Ke dutse fela kantle ho ward ke emetse doc horr anjwetse horr ho etsahalang ka Calvin( I am waiting for the doctor outside the ward so that he can tell me what's wrong with Calvin ) . He got out , I stood up and went to him.

Me: is he fine? What's wrong with him?

Doctor: woah , potso ele ngwe ka nako. Eya ho hantle yena , empa fela alaba le asthma attack( woah, one question at a time . Yes he is fine , he had an asthma attack)

Me: *in disbelief* asthma attack?

Doctor: yes , asthma attack but we gave him an asthma pomp to help him if it comes back. Are you his family?

Me: no , I am his friend. I wonder what made me have an asthma attack.

Doctor: it's nice to have supportive friends by your side , he is lucky to have you. Well we are not sure about what triggered it , that's why we need to hold him in for a night to examine him. Did he have asthma before?

Me: no doc , he never had asthma.

Doctor: strange, we will examine him and come up with something that would best explain why the attack took place.

Me: okay doc , may I go in?

Doctor: yes , but the visiting hours are about to end in about 30 mins.

Me: thanks doc.

I went in the ward and saw him lying there on the bed looking at the ceiling.

Me: How are you?

Calvin: ke hantle Melissa! Hona jwale hake batle baeti .( I am fine Melissa! Right now I don't want visitors ).

He seems angry and angry at what I don't know. So I went back home with a heavy heart.

It's 13:00 Pm Saturday , it's boring , no company , no nothing. I have eaten many times trying to get rid of the boredom but now I am too full. Maybe I should go to the shop and buy something, yeah that's a great idea. I ran upstairs , headed to my safe , took out some cash , locked it and went out. After stepping out of the house , I am welcomed by cool air , so refreshing! I walk to the nearest tuckshop... When I get there , I buy data. While waiting to get my receipt and data , I felt a familiar scent , I looked back and found Dave behind me. My heart began to beat fast and I looked back at the shopkeeper without thinking twice.

Shopkeeper: here is your receipt as well as data , thanks for shopping here.

Me: my pleasure.

- I said already leaving in a hurry , I could find the courage to be next him like that. On the way , someone was calling out to me , I tried to mize it but the person kept on calling me. I stopped and looked back and saw him again.

Dave : Hey bro * breathing heavily * you forgot your data.

- he said stretching the data towards my hand , I took it from him.

Me: thank you.

- soon as I was about to leave him, he pulled me by my hand and I felt strange sensations. I turned to him.

Dave : I didn't get your name.

Me: I am Calvin.

Dave: okay , nice to meet you Calvin.

Me: likewise.

- even now he hasn't let go of my hand , I looked at him once more and then to the hand. He laughed, let go of my hand and we parted ways. On the way , I was literally blushing , having flashbacks about how he held my hand and looked deep into my eyes...it's like he was searching for something. I got to my house , opened , got in , closed and headed to my room. I sat on top of my bed , and looked at the data that was in his majestic hands. I am not a loud person but I screamed my ass out remembering how tight he held onto my hand , it was like we were in those romance movies and his stare made me drunk. I dialed the data in my phone and began to scroll endlessly.

I picked up my phone , and it's a photo from Melissa. I opened it , it was a photo of Dave and it was written "my crush" as a caption. I got so annoyed that I even felt like I could just block her now.
Text:

Me: is that the guy you showed me today?? * Acting stupid *

Melissa: yes , isn't he majestic?? Like at his perfect jawline , body and that clean hair.

I took a second before I could reply to her text. This one imma kill, she shouldn't drool at my man. Yes I said it, my man.

Me: well Melissa , you are aware that I am a guy right? So I don't compliment people of the same gender.
But I do compliment him, secretly so.

Melissa: I know you also a guy , but you could at least tell me if me and him would be a good match.
Good match, your kidding girl. I looked at her text for a period now without texting her back.

Me: ohh my battery is about to die, bye.

I texted back , locked my phone and sighed. This girl is testing me for real , I took my food out of the oven , went to my room and began to snack while watching series.

DAVE'S POINT OF VIEW.

Hey , my name is Dave Sherlock, I am 16 year old guy. I live with my mom only. For my description , I would say I have black hair , perfect face🤣 and a masculine body. Not to forget that I am wanted by every girl at school.

- later on , i was seated down with my mother , having dinner. we chatted about our day went over dinner. after eating , i helped her clear the table and went to my room after. i checked the notifications that were flooding my screen , people always follow me and sometimes this popularity thing annoys me. i hate being nagged sometimes.

I dried my face with the towel and headed to class since the bell just rang. i walked out of the bathroom and let out a deep sigh as i remembered that it's mathematics period right now. it's going to be a long , tiring day. yaaaaaaaaaay!

FAST FORWARD.

I just finished packing my books into my bag and waited for Melissa and Peter .Melissa and Peter are friends of mine , we used to attend the same primary school and here we are... still together. Melissa is that type of girl who is literally obsessed with popularity and popular guys while my friend Peter is a calm guy , he doesn't really talk a lot but he always have perfect words to say in time of need.

Melissa: can you believe that Angelina fought with Catherine for a guy??

Me: your lying * Surprised *.

Angelina is one of those freaky , obsessed bi***es who love boys.

Peter : I wonder who was she fighting for this time.

Melissa: Dave.

Me: & who is Dave??

She pointed , I looked where she pointed and found him. Just looking at him made my knees go weak, my eyes popped up as if I was dying, somebody help. He passed by , his scent filled my nostrils.

Melissa : but he is worth fighting right??

Peter: how could you ask Calvin that question?? He is a boy, & boys don't compliment each other.

ohh , i forgot to mention that he is homophobic and i haven't really came out to anyone , not even my closest friends since they are homophobic.I just agreed with my head, but my heart was against Peter, it longed to see Dave only Dave. I brushed off the feeling, and continued walking home with Melissa & Peter. After some time , I got home , I shared a hug with Melissa and did a fist bump with Peter. I got inside , went to my room and took of my school uniform. Went to my closet, chose a black short , a black short sleeved t-shirt and my flip flops, went downstairs and prepared some popcorn for myself. While waiting for the popcorn , a notification clicked on my phone.

- I am at school, usually hanging out with my friends. I see him pass by , the feeling of joy suddenly evoked in me. I began to worry bout the feelings I have been having lately to boys and I wish that they would fade away because even if I told him... he still wouldn't fall for me. I excuse myself, heading to the bathroom to refresh myself. I looked at my reflection on the mirror, shook my head and splashed some water on my face. What is happening to me?? This sudden attraction to boys has been stronger and stronger each day, could this mean I am gay??
