10 shocking country legends you won’t believe are NOT GRAND OLE OPRY MEMBERS!

1. George Strait
Strait was offered Opry membership but turned it down. With his heart set firmly in Texas, the commitment to perform multiple times a year didn’t align with his plans.

2. Willie Nelson
Willie Nelson left a lasting mark with his Grand Ole Opry debut on November 28, 1964, joining as an official member just a year later. But life, much like a country song, led Willie back to his Texas roots in 1972. With a packed bag and heartfelt goodbyes, he returned to the Lone Star State, ultimately letting go of his Opry membership due to the distance. Since then, he has yet to receive an invitation to rejoin.

3. Tanya Tucker
In 2023, Tanya Tucker made Grand Ole Opry history by becoming the first artist to perform on horseback, a truly unforgettable moment. However, she still has work to do to secure her membership. Despite a flurry of recent performances, they haven’t quite made up for her long absence; she notably skipped the Opry for 15 years between 1982 and 1997.

4. Dwight Yoakam
The likely reason Dwight Yoakam hasn’t received an Opry invitation is his rare appearances on its stage. While he may not have shown much interest, as one of the biggest stars of the 1990s, Yoakam’s name undoubtedly deserves a spot in Opry history.

5. Chris Stapleton
Though Chris Stapleton first stepped onto the Opry stage over a decade ago, on September 24, 2013, he has yet to earn an official membership.

6. Hank Williams Jr.
Family history may have contributed to this surprising exclusion. Hank Williams Sr. was once an Opry member until his membership was revoked due to issues with alcohol and missed shows. Although nothing official has been said, it’s possible this legacy has influenced Hank Williams Jr.’s own decision not to pursue Opry membership actively.

7. Miranda Lambert
Simply put, Miranda Lambert hasn’t appeared on the Opry stage often enough, nor has she shown much interest in securing a membership.

8. Brooks & Dunn
Brooks & Dunn have never joined the Grand Ole Opry, likely because their packed touring schedule conflicts with the Opry's commitment to regular performances.

9. Alabama
Though Alabama holds a revered spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame, fans often wonder why they aren't official members of the Grand Ole Opry. Despite a legendary 50-year career and countless performances on the Opry stage, the iconic band has yet to be inducted as members.

10. Cody Johnson
Although Cody Johnson calls Texas home, he has made several memorable appearances on the Grand Ole Opry stage since his debut in 2017. With his nomination for Entertainer of the Year, it seems only fitting that he would be a part of the Opry’s rich tapestry of history. Yet, surprisingly, he has yet to become an official member.
