1️⃣ We are LOVING , a collection of original and retold fairy tales and folktales featuring incredibly gorgeous artwork with all characters! When we read the "goldilocks" rewrite (The Girl with the Golden Locs), Shawheen and I turned to each other and said, "wow. that is so much better than the original." This is exactly the kind of fairy tales we've been searching for and I'm so glad we !
2️⃣ Mama Shamsi at the Bazaar by Mojdeh Hassani and Samira Ravani, illustrated by Maya Fidawi 🇮🇷 Set in in the 70s, the main character is a little girl afraid of being lost at the bazaar and begs her Mama Shamsi to let her hide under her chador! Hilarious and imaginative responses ensue that create great opportunities to playact and be silly with your kids 🐫🦒🦘
3️⃣ Kia Ora by June Pitman-Hayes, illustrated by Minky Stapleton, lyrics by Ngaere Roberts 🇳🇿 a gift from A's Omi and Grandpa (my parents) from New Zealand! Thanks Omi and Grandpa! 4️⃣ My Grandma and Me by Mina Javaherbin 🇮🇷 such a sweet story celebrating a (grandma) 🥰
5️⃣ One Whole Me by Dia Mixon and Natalia Jiménez Osorio 🇨🇴🇺🇸 a celebration of and ! Highly recommend for and for positive representation, and for everyone else for awareness and appreciation 🫶

as a toddler mom involves a lot of questions: chee? (what?), chee-eh? (what is it?), chee meekhai? (what do you want?), chee shod? (what happened?) and of course, hāpu chee meegeh? (what does the doggy say?) 🐕 Stay tuned later this week for more "chee" (what?) questions in real life context as my toddler and I both practice our Farsi words out in the world! 🥰

It’s never too late to inspire a love of learning Farsi (or anything else). The best tool in my toolbox is a growth mindset! 🌱 Mistakes allow us to learn. They are stepping stones to fluency! If you’re learning Farsi now, don’t let fear of mistakes stop you from trying to practice in conversation with others - find a conversation partner you know will be ❤️ loving and kind ❤️ in their feedback, and don’t choose those who you think might be overly harsh. My lovely mother-in-law is an excellent example of this: she says “usually you hear people say… but people will know what you mean even if you say it that way.” It’s a very generous way to give constructive criticism 💕 read more tips for learning Farsi and teaching your family in my blog: https://www.littlefarsibooks.com/blog/ or click the link in my bio

The text is so simple and rhythmic that it can be engaging for my toddler and still hold deep meaning for adult readers. Heck, I think everyone should read it! It really made me feel the hopefulness and joy of that moment, and appreciate the difficult history behind the holiday. 2️⃣ *Change Sings*, written by Amanda Gorman, illustrated by Loren Long: Honestly, I read this and thought, what a gift Amanda Gorman is. I just adore her poetry and this poem in particular is hopeful, empowering, and accessible for very young readers while still being engaging for older readers too. 3️⃣ *Opal Lee and What It Means To Be Free*, written by Alice Faye Duncan, illustrated by Keturah A. Bobo, needs to be required reading for Juneteenth! It’s a wonderful, accessible history of Juneteenth and the recognition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday told from the point of view of kids learning from Ms. Opal Lee, the woman who made it happen. I swear she's saying "chee!" چیِه (cheeyeh) is an informal, short way of saying "what is it?" "Chee" (what) + the ending "eh" (a contraction of "it is") = "cheeyeh?" (what is it?) A loves going to visit the جوجو (joojoo - toddler farsi for 🐥🐔), بُز (boz 🐐), and اُردَک (ordák 🦆) at the local plant nursery For Garden's Sake . Now that her vocabulary is growing in leaps and bounds, she's saying new words every single day, and little family outings like this one are a great time to encourage her to use them! #farsilearning humor 😅 ع‌= the tiny pause between vowel sounds, also known as a glottal stop. This can be hard to explain because it’s the absence of sound rather than a sound! But imagine you’re saying “British” or “Button” with a bad cockney accent (apologies to my British folks, please don’t be offended by my use of a stereotypical accent!) or say “uh-oh” out loud - hear that little pause between “uh” and “oh”? Feel how you cut off the flow of air in your throat to make that pause? ~*that*~ is ‘eyn, a glottal stop!
