hāpu is toddler Farsi for “doggie,” but in Hawaiian it’s the name of a tree fern, so this one always makes me chuckle because I’ve got two very conflicting images warring in my brain every time my kid shouts “hāpuuuuuu!!!!” (Which is all the time - she’s obsessed.) Her daycare teachers thought she was saying “💩” so that was a funny intercultural miscommunication too 🤦♀️

Bodo | بُدو also means 👏 ‘hurry up’ 👏colloquially, but literally it means ‘run’ 🏃♀️💨 This is the informal spoken way to demand or request someone run or hurry, taking the present tense stem of the verb ‘to run | دو | dō’ (sounds like ‘dough’) and adding the imperative prefix ‘be | بِ’ (sounds like ‘bed’ without the d). Because the verb has an ‘ō’ sound like ‘roll,’ as the first vowel, the ‘be’ is pronounced ‘bō’ (sounds like ‘bow’).
Or if you’re my toddler, it could mean everything from “come on, mom” to “I’m freeeeeee!!!!” such as when she’s been stuck in a car seat for a long flight and can finally stretch her legs!

Adding “بِ | beh” to the beginning of a present tense verb stem in Farsi makes it a command/request. 🧒 I get a lot of practice with my toddler using these imperative verbs, and clearly she enjoys taking charge and using them too! She is forever telling us to “beeya!” (Come!) 😂 The verb “آمَد | āmád,” or “to come” has a super short present tense stem: “آ | ā.” Add the “beh” and it transforms slightly irregularly to “بیا | bee-yā.” 🤓 What commands/requests do you use with your kids a lot?

1️⃣ I personally am obsessed with *All Different Now*, written by Angela Johnson, illustrated by E. B. Lewis. The text is so simple and rhythmic that it can be engaging for my toddler and still hold deep meaning for adult readers. Heck, I think everyone should read it! It really made me feel the hopefulness and joy of that moment, and appreciate the difficult history behind the holiday.
2️⃣ *Change Sings*, written by Amanda Gorman, illustrated by Loren Long: Honestly, I read this and thought, what a gift Amanda Gorman is. I just adore her poetry and this poem in particular is hopeful, empowering, and accessible for very young readers while still being engaging for older readers too.
3️⃣ *Opal Lee and What It Means To Be Free*, written by Alice Faye Duncan, illustrated by Keturah A. Bobo, needs to be required reading for Juneteenth! It’s a wonderful, accessible history of Juneteenth and the recognition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday told from the point of view of kids learning from Ms. Opal Lee, the woman who made it happen. Ms. Opal also wrote her own awesome book about Juneteenth, but this one includes more of her personal story and I think the language is a little easier for the youngest readers.
