series: Kagan Kingsbury is a senior here at Dodge City High School who moved from Kansas City in his eighth-grade year. Kingsbury is involved in JROTC, as well as in the art department here at school. Outside of school, Kingsbury enjoys working on his car, welding, and doing community service. “I typically like to really do anything all across the board, I like to help my community out,” said Kingsbury. Kingsbury has been involved in ceramics since before he moved to Dodge City, doing a private study with a potter back in Kansas City. Prior to moving to starting high school, Kingsbury joined the art department, continuing his love for art. Kingsbury recently sent in a piece of art to the regional scholastic competition, earning a gold key. “It’s like a preliminary. You send it in, there’s like a whole lot of art. You can get different awards, but the gold key is used to go to nationals,” said Kingsbury. The piece that earned Kingsbury a spot in the national competitions is one he recreated called ‘The Three Monkeys, see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.’ This piece was one he made for his aunt a couple of years ago, and this time around, he decided he wanted to recreate the piece and make it even better than before. This recreation took Kingsbury four weeks to complete. “My creativity and freedom is what keeps me going,” said Kingsbury.
The NCECA Conference, held by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, is in Richmond, Virginia, this year. At the regional competitions, 1170 pieces were judged, and 150 were selected for nationals, alongside Kingsbury’s piece. Artists’ whose pieces were selected for nationals will have the opportunity to earn scholarship money and a gold medal. After graduation, Kingsbury plans on serving in the Marine Corps. Prior to his service in the Marines, Kingsbury plans on being a freelance artist. A piece of advice that Kingsbury has is, “I would say to take criticism lightly, don’t take it to heart,” said Kingsbury.

series: Karina Avalos is a junior who is a part of cross country, track, basketball stats, NHS, STUCO, and book club. Avalos was born in Dodge City and likes to work out, run, read, and bake. Avalos does business classes at DCHS which helped with her internship at Boot Hill. “I was really interested in marketing, like business marketing, and it's something I always liked. I wanted to try it out to see how it was and so far I really like it,” said Avalos. At the moment, she helps with marketing on their social media and website. Avalos also has a side business as a cake baker. “I've always liked baking since I was really little, and at first I just did it for fun but then my family started telling me to get out there more and they started promoting to their friends and selling. That's when I decided to start my own page and slowly try to build it off of that,” said Avalos. Her family is what motivates her to do her best at everything she does. “My family is what motivates me, they always pushed me when it came to academics and they support whatever I do. When they found out I was doing the internship and taking all these business classes they were super supportive of it and they always pushed me to do my best,” said Avalos. After high school, Avalos plans to attend a four-year university to major in business or marketing, potentially at Washburn or K-State, or stay in Dodge for a year or two and then transfer.

series: Thompson taught kindergarten for a year and realized that she desired something different. "I have an elementary degree first. I did one year of teaching kindergarten and decided I needed to have a little bit more conversation," said Thompson. She then returned to school to get certified to teach high school English. Thompson has taught junior and high school English ever since then. "You do not want me teaching math to anyone or science," said Thompson. Thompson has also coached a few sports, including volleyball, basketball, and track. An interesting fact that many may not know is that Thompson has taught every grade except first grade. Throughout her teaching career, Thompson has created many special bonds with her students, from helping them with college or scholarship essays to watching them grow from teaching them in freshman English all the way to having them back for senior English. After retirement, Thompson plans to "spend time with my children, instead of other people's children, and my three grandkids," said Thomson. Thompson began her teaching career with kindergarten and will be ending it with seniors this year.

series: Junior Estefany Vital has lived in Dodge City her whole life. Vital likes to spend time with her family and friends. In her sophomore year of high school, Vital decided to take Cassandra Rolland’s commercial photography class. It was then Vital joined Yearbook her junior year. “What made me want to join the Yearbook was really Mrs. Rolland. I took her photojournalism class my freshman year, and I enjoyed it. I later asked her if she had any more classes like that, and she invited me to join her Photo 2 class in my sophomore year. Then, at the beginning of this year, I started Yearbook, and I really enjoyed it.” Taking all three of Rolland’s classes, Vital has developed certain journalism skills to help her take pictures of school events and write articles. “In Yearbook I write articles for the yearbook, dodgers, I take pictures for some sports or the choir/orchestra concerts”. Vital specializes in taking photos of student life events such as orchestra and choir concerts. Vital is always working hard not just for the Yearbook but for herself and her parents, who have always supported her, “What motivates me is my family but mostly my parents because I want to be able to make them proud of me in the future.” After high school, Vital wants to study law and work towards a degree in immigration. “My plans after high school are to go to college and become an immigration lawyer. This would be my dream for me because I would really be able to help so many people”, said Vital.

series: Senior Rony Castro was born in Dodge City, and when he was about one year old, his family moved to Guatemala. He grew up in a small town named Canilla Quiché and was raised there for seven years. In late 2014, his mom sent him and his brother back to Dodge, where his dad had been waiting for them already. “The change from that small town to Dodge was very big,” said Castro. In school, he is involved in the Dodge City High School Chamber Orchestra and the Teacher Cadet Program, and outside of school, he is involved in the Wichita Youth Symphony Orchestra, where he is 1st chair and the Kansas All-State Orchestra. After high school, Castro plans on attending the UMKC Conservatory of Music in Kansas City to study Cello Performance. What motivates Castro are his friends who are also into music, “I’ve been lucky enough to meet some of the greatest players in the state, and they are amazing people as well, and we always help each other out to get our playing to the highest level,” said Castro. World-class cellists like Yo-Yo Ma also inspire him. His family and peers highly support Castro. “Thankfully, I have a lot of people who support me, like my siblings, teachers, family, and friends, but I would say my biggest supporter is my dad. He has always been there for me, and he also plays the guitar, so he knows how music works so he understands me better. He always comes with me when I have to travel for competitions, lessons, and performances and always makes every trip we make memorable,” said Castro.

series: Jim Mapel, a teacher of 39 years, has taught honors American History, Teacher Cadet, and the History of Rock and Roll. Mapel has lived in Dodge City his whole life, he graduated in 1975 from Dodge City High School and went to Dodge City Community College where he earned an associate of arts degree. He later went to Wichita State University for three years and got his teaching certificate at St. Mary of the Plains College. Teaching wasn’t Mapel’s first option, he worked many jobs before but didn’t think of them as a career. He later got an opportunity to teach a golf class that would later change his life. “I got out of college and I had a history degree but I really didn’t think much about teaching, I was asked to teach an evening golf class at the community college and I thought to myself, I kinda like this, so at age 28 I went back to school and got my teaching certification,” said Mapel. Mapel began teaching honors American History then picked up Teacher Cadet, where he encourages students who want to get into the education career pathway, and then finally picked up the History of Rock and Roll.“I love rock and roll and I believe that rock and roll is more than just music. It's a powerful force that shaped society, challenged norms, and inspired generations. I wanted students to feel the energy and passion behind every riff and lyric,” said Mapel. There have been many ups and downs in Mapel's teaching career but the love he has for all his students is what makes him enjoy every minute of it. “The best thing about being a teacher is the students, it's what I'll miss the most, seeing the students every day and the day-to-day contact. I think that's what's been so rewarding about my teaching career,” said Mapel. However, it is Mapel's last year teaching. He still wants what's best for all of his students.“I want my students to know that they are capable of amazing things, when they believe in themselves, they can conquer any challenge, and make their dreams a reality,” said Mapel. After retirement, Mapel would like to spend time with his two grandchildren and possibly travel a bit with his wife.
