The Dexter High School football squad entered the state’s top teams in Class 3 for the first time in 13 seasons this week, as the Bearcats climbed to a No. 9 ranking. It looked every bit that part on Friday, as Dexter dominated Sikeston 48-7 at Charles Bland Stadium.

“The kids came out and executed really well,” third-year Bearcat coach Chad Jamerson said. “I was so proud of the effort that we got out of everyone.”

The Advance Hornets volleyball team shook off its first loss in almost a year by turning in a 25-21, 25-16, 25-14 road win Friday night over the Bernie Mules in a Stoddard County Activities Association contest at Bernie High School.

Making the win was even sweeter for the Hornets (2-1, 2-0 SCAA) was picking up a straight-set win over a Bernie team which won 18 games last season and returns many of the players from that squad.

There was a stark difference between the Dexter and Malden football programs on Friday, as the Bearcats have had two-plus seasons to evolve into a very solid group, whereas the Green Wave are taking their first steps toward doing just that in first-year coach Treston Pulley's tenure.

“We don't give up at all,” Advance setter Kyndall Hitt said. “We push ourselves till we are dead on the floor. We really have worked on being a team, and we've challenged each other the most to step up.”

With a solid core of young, but experienced, veterans returning, the biggest question for the Advance Hornets volleyball team might be about the intangibles. The Hornets have graduated all-staters Lexi Hoffman and Abigail Kennedy, but return two other all-state players and several key players from l...

“You need every mile before the season starts,” Dexter senior runner Cameron Bell explained. “That is so important. When you have those miles, and you get to your season and you’re starting to do workouts, to have that really solid base, it really takes your running to another level.”

DEXTER -- The Dexter High School varsity boy's cross country squad spent the entire summer "building a base," according to senior Cameron Bell, but now that the season is here, and competition nears, the training gets turned up a notch. "You need every mile before the season starts," Bell explained,...

“I think that it is going to be a fun year,” Dexter volleyball coach Haylee Orf said. “We have 10 solid girls, but we also have a couple of younger girls, who are working even towards next year, and they could evolve.”

DEXTER -- A year ago, Dexter High School varsity volleyball coach Haylee Orf was in the first days of guiding the program, and the process of putting her offensive and defensive systems in place was proving to need some time to develop.

“Everybody’s success in football,” Dexter coach Chad Jamerson said, “is dependent on somebody else. That is the truth. When it comes to football, everybody’s success is dependent on the guy standing next to them.”

DEXTER -- Following its most successful football season since 2011, the Dexter High School varsity squad will certainly not lack for athletic highlights this fall. However, something to keep in mind is the fact that none of those incredible runs passes, or catches from the offensive Bearcats will be...
