Some thoughts from Jake Brend on No. 8 Iowa State's 79-65 win over Colorado.

That was expected...
There's not really a story to come out that game. Iowa State led by 15+ for the entire second half and probably should've won by 25. It was an easy win, as expected. How'd it happen? I'd say the defensive effort to start the game ended the game before the under-16 timeout. In the first eight minutes, Colorado had just one made field goal and five turnovers. Iowa State ended up with 18 points off of 14 Colorado turnovers. ISU imposed their will on that end of the floor and it resulted in a stress-free win.

Selflessness leads to balance...
The stat of the night is 19 assists on 24 made field goals. That resulted in five Cyclones scoring in double figures. Dishon Jackson and Milan Momcilovic both scored 13 while Tamin Lipsey and Joshua Jefferson added 12 each. Nate Heise was great off the bench with 11 points (4-6 FG, 2-3 3PT) and four rebounds. He's quietly put together a really solid four game stretch on both sides of the ball since Momcilovic returned from injury. If he's making open threes in March, it changes a lot for this team. Iowa State won't be a great half-court offensive team most nights but the best way they can be efficient is by following the selfless and balanced recipe.

Let's nitpick...
The turnover problem still wasn't solved, especially early on. Iowa State finished with 14 turnovers which is still too many. Six of those can be traced back to Keshon Gilbert. If there's any area to nitpick, it was Gilbert's play. He's been really hot or cold the last month or so. For him, it's about finding the balance between aggressive and reckless. He's been one of the best players in America because of his aggression but he's also had some bad stretches because of it. The key for Iowa State for the last month of the season should be finding way to reach that happy medium for Gilbert. Overall, it's hard to take too much of it from a game against that team.

Up next...
Iowa State wraps up the season series with Colorado at 3-0. More importantly they finish the stretch between Lawrence and Houston at 4-0 (all wins by double digits.) The toughest test of the season awaits Saturday at 1 p.m.

Iowa State wins its 20th game in a hard fought game against Cincinnati. The Cyclones are a 3-seed in the NCAA Tournament committee's first bracket release. Iowa blows a four point halftime lead and gets routed at Maryland 101-75. Hassel gives the top candidates he'd like to see as Iowa's next head coach. Monday's snow chance looks to bring up to 3" in parts of SW Iowa with central Iowa seeing under an inch. The bigger weather story this week is the cold. Cold headlines remain in place for all of Iowa. Expect wind chills 25-35ยฐ below zero each morning through Thursday.
By the end of the week we'll finally start to recover with highs in the upper 20s on Saturday and upper 30s on Sunday.

Some thoughts from Jake Brend on No. 10 Iowa State's 81-70 win over Cincinnati.

Offensive rebounding in the second half...
After the game was tied at halftime, Iowa State won the game on the glass. In the second half alone, Iowa State outrebounded Cincinnati 23-9 total, 10-2 on OREB and 13-2 on second chance points. It was a team effort, six of ISU's eight players that played minutes pulled down an offensive rebound. But it was Brandt Chatfield that pulled down *five* total. His effort was outstanding and set the tone between what could've been a potential upset and a double-digit win.

The officiating played a huge role...
This game had five technical fouls. Three on Cincinnati, two on Iowa State. That's as many as I can remember in a long time. The most crucial came from Cincinnati head coach Wes Miller. With 6:55 remaining and ISU leading 63-59, Miller was T'd up... Curtis Jones made the two free throws, then Milan Momcilovic drilled a three at the top of the key and Tamin Lipsey had a steal for a breakaway layup. That 7-0 run in less than a minute sealed Cincinnati's fate. Other than the technical fouls, I thought the officials lost control of this game. Iowa State didn't like the whistle in the first half and I'll be honest, I didn't think it was too bad... but that's not important. What matters is T.J. Otzelberger talked to Tony Padilla for several minutes after the first half. That strategy by Otzelberger proved to be the right one. As the crowd got on the officials, ISU was the beneficiary of a home-friendly whistle in the second half. Iowa State shot 21 free throws in the half (26-30 in the game.) Give Iowa State credit, they were aggressive, fouling out Jizzle James and Dillon Mitchell. No matter how the officials are graded, you can get that many free points, that makes life a lot easier.

What a performance by Jizzle James...
Cincinnati's feisty 6'1 guard scored a game-high 25 points (9-16 FG, 5-9 3PT) and put on absolute show. The degree of difficulty that he was making shots at was a "tip your cap" performance. Did Iowa State have some lapses? Sure. But this was more about James than the ISU defense. Coming into today, James was averaging 21.3 points per game over his last three... he's playing at an extremely high-level. As for Cincinnati overall, that's a team that shot well above their season average from deep. They came into today shooting 30% from three in Big 12 play and ended up going 11-27 (40.7%.) How concerning is that? Well, the way Iowa State plays defense typically leaves the other team a lot of chances to shoot threes. I would guess with Cincinnati's poor shooting numbers, Iowa State ratcheted up the aggressiveness and got burnt. The good news is that Iowa State found other ways to win, despite the hot shooting day.

The turnover issue...
Iowa State turned the ball over 18 times. Once again, that's way too many. That's become an alarming trend. In Big 12 play, ISU is turning the ball over on 18.3% of possessions, that ranks just 11th in the conference. I thought today was a tale of two halves turnover wise... the first half was filled with more careless turnovers, the second half was trying to be "too cute." At the end of the day, all turnovers are bad and Iowa State needs to cut them down quick. If there's a silver lining, it's that ISU held Cincy to 13 points off of those 18 turnovers. That's a pretty crucial stat to minimize the potential damage of turnovers.

Up next...
The Cyclones make it three wins in a row, all by double digits. Iowa State welcomes Colorado to Hilton Coliseum on Tuesday night before heading to Houston on Saturday.

Meteorologist Amber Alexander is back with another forecast as the next round of snow is expected on Saturday.

Most will see 2-4" of snow but a narrow band is expected to form and produce totals of 5-8".
Southern Iowa will also see some ice throughout the early morning, but that will transition over to snow by the late morning/early afternoon.
Everyone will also experience strong northerly winds which along with snow will mean visibility will be low at times, especially during the morning and afternoon.

This wave is followed by much colder air. Highs will stay in the single digits with lows below zero.
There is also another chance for snow on Monday with most looking to pick up less than 2".
