About a year ago, Teresa said, “you need to record an album!”. We’d talked about it before, but this time she meant it, and I listened.
We got to thinking about …what’s this going to be? Where do we record it? I think Teresa (aka Harri) came up with the idea of Nashville. As I imagined a Venn Diagram of the music I love to play (jazz and blues, rock, country and gospel), they all meet up in Music City. So, destination… Nashville!
Going in, the idea was an album that represents a day in the studio. Mission accomplished. I did the solo piano tracks in the morning, and we cut the vocals and band in the afternoon. These are mostly songs I’ve been playing for a long time. Plus, there are two originals that Harri and I co-wrote (she wrote the melody on the title track, too).
Our friend Justin connected me to the perfect engineer and studio space (and piano) right on Music Row. Thanks to Jake Burns at Loud Recording Studio for your world-class skill and expertise. It was a pleasure working with you, Jake. And, it was a day we won’t forget. It’s inspiring to record in a place where so many artists have worked and albums have been born (look up Loud Recording on Discogs).
Outside of solo piano tracks, this album is a mostly-family-band situation. I asked our youngest daughter, Bri, to sing Billy Joel’s “Vienna”. Our daughter Kenzie’s husband Tucker is a talented singer-songwriter with his own band in Denver (Chewy & Bach), and he sings lead on “Wagon Wheel”. And, it was an honor to record with my Dad… my first musical (and most every other) influence! Well done on the mandolin, Captain! And, a million thanks to Kerry Conner (acoustic guitar) and Justin Weaver (electric guitar), for beautifying (that’s an understatement, as you’ll hear) “Oh Shenandoah”.
If you want to listen to yours truly and Harri talk about the album IN DEPTH, we fired up the old podcast machine for a new “album release” episode of “Just Over The Fence”. Listen here:

A woefully incomplete list of THANK YOU’S…
First, last and always…My beautiful wife, my love, my co-writer and biggest fan: Teresa (aka Harri H Harrison). This absolutely would not have happened without you. You are a gifted writer. Thank you for being my best, closest friend and fellow traveler.
And, to our children and grandchildren: Tanner and Keith, Kendra, Zoey, and Ram, Kenzie and Tucker and Bri, nothing but love to each of you. I’m proud of you all. Thank you for inspiring me to keep trying to be the best I can be.
Thank you to my parents (who, years ago, went to Des Moines and bought a piano I’m sure they couldn’t afford only to then pay for piano lessons I’m sure they couldn’t afford). The piano and the lessons changed my life. Thank you to my brothers and their families, and to my grandparents… and family and friends in Iowa. I can’t miss this chance to also thank Teresa’s family - I am honored to know all of you (including Kent Harrison, for always supporting whatever crazy thing we’ve got going on over here!).
Thank you to my piano teachers: Cheryl Weesner, Karen Lapardus, Dianne Braymen, Jan Berner, Lucille Petras, Dr. James March, Dr. Kathryn March, Lance Lehmberg and Dana Marsh. I had a remarkable elementary school music teacher: Dr. Michael Patterson. And, Mary Parker and Wade Presley in Seymour. Thank you to the Torkelsons in Gilmore City. And, too many other teachers and friends from Morningside to name. Holy macaroni, I am a blessed guy.
To our Colorado friends and family - you all mean the world to me, and us. Thank you.
The last decade-and-a-half-ish, I have been blessed to work with Colorado legend Hazel Miller and her band. Hazel, I don’t even know how to begin to say thank you. You gave me a shot to play with the best band around. You are special - and a gift to me and everyone who knows you. To the band, thank you for your friendship and camaraderie. I’ve learned more from each of you than you probably know: Dana Marsh (you unlocked musical secrets, and introduced me to a scene I didn’t even know existed - thank you, brother!), Rich Lamb (playing alongside you has been a master class), Cody Carbone, Brian Mikulich, Jeff Nathanson, Coco Brown, Carl Carwell, Chris Stongle, Brian Monroney, Frank Selman… holy smokes, what a list… and it goes on…
My first blues band out of college: I still draw on (and I think I’m finally understanding some) things I learned from Scotty Spenner and the Big Tones: John Rosseter, and my friend Eric Riley 💙.
And, my first real country band (I started at the top on this one): from Denver to Nashville, the Blistered Keisters. Grateful for the chance to know and work with each of you.
I now understand why the “thank you” lists on people’s first albums are so long. So many to name… and I know I’m still forgetting… but I need to wrap it up. So, here’s one more:
Thank you to everyone who ever said “you should record an album.” We finally did it!
