man in the 9th, Kyler Hickman launched a shot over the left field wall, & then with 2 out & the tying run at the plate, Charlie Yaeger induced the final hitter to fly out to left just before the thunder & rains came as Dansville would extend their season for at least another night.

Gliders Grab a Win in Regular Season Finale…Enter Play-offs as # 3 Seed in West.

Dansville Gliders 5 Salamanca Lizards 4

Every coach always wants to play their best baseball heading into the post-season, that includes Gliders head coach Barry Dean. His ballclub will enter the N.Y.C.B.L. play-offs this week after posting a pair of victories in a row to gather some momentum. After Friday (July 19) night’s 2nd game win at Horseheads, Dansville followed it up by celebrating “Host Family Appreciation Night” with a tight 5-4 triumph over Salamanca on Saturday (July 20) at Babcock Park in a well-played game by both teams.

The home team’s hearts sank in the top of the first when the Lizards hung 3-runs on the board to grab the earlier lead. Following a hit & run single by Anthony Snyder, Max Rogers came up & clubbed a 2-run homer making it 3-0 in the blink-of-an-eye! The Gliders scraped away a run in the bottom half when Reid Martin singled, stole 2nd & 3rd, then scored on Cooper Berry’s sacrifice fly. Dansville would knot things up in the 4th when Liam Stonestreet swatted a ground rule double that bounced over the right centerfield fence. Justin Colpack was hit by a pitch & when Carter Shin reached on an error, the bases were loaded. A run was forced in when Justin Hernandez was also hit by a pitch, & then Cam Abele’s single made it a 3-3 game.

Andy Hartman’s rbi single in the top of the 5th saw Salamanca regain the lead 5-4. That edge didn’t last long as the Gliders plated the final 2 runs of the ballgame on Justin Colpack’s double making it 5-4. Dansville’s pitching by committee out of the bullpen would shut out the Lizards in the final 3 frames as Aidrian Hernandez, Aiden McSherry, & Bryan Loving would all toss shut-out baseball the rest of the way as Loving would register the save as Hernandez & McSherry would hold the line. Lefty Reid Martin would get his first pitching victory working 6 strong innings, scattering 9 hits, allowing 3 runs in the opening inning & then settling down to strike out 2 & walk 3 the rest of the way.

Dansville’s offense was paced by Reid Martin who was 2-4 at the plate, stole 2 bases & scored a run. Cam Abele also added a pair of hits & drove in a run. Liam Stonestreet, Justin Colpack & Carter Shin all added doubles in the victory, while Cooper Berry drove in his 39th run of the season, giving him an average of over 1 run batted in per game.

Dansville finishes the regular season with a record of 17-18-1 & will be the #3 seed & host a playoff game at Babcock Park on Monday (July 22) afternoon at 4:30 against 6th seeded Horseheads (9-27).

Gliders Secure Split at Horseheads…Can Finish 3 or 4 in Finale

Game # 1- Horseheads Hitmen 14 Dansville Gliders 10

Game # 2 Dansville Gliders 9 Horseheads Hitmen 2

Baseball is a strange game as statistics will prove out as the Dansville Gliders gained a split in Horseheads on Friday (July 19) night in their twin bill with the Hitmen. Dansville homered 4 times in the opener, but fell 14-10. In the nightcap the Gliders had only 2 extra base hits while “singling” Horseheads to death in a 9-2 turnaround.

In game # 1 both teams were “offensive” right out of the gate. Dansville scored 9 of their 10 runs in the first 4 innings. However, Horseheads would plate 13 of their 14 in the same time-frame to hold out for the victory. Glider homers came off the bats of Russ Golembe who hit his 4th of the season, Cooper Berry (5), Justin Colpack (3), & Cam Abele (1). A.J. Brotz & Matt Procopio also slugged round-trippers for Horseheads. Cooper Berry went 3-3 in the game driving in 3 runs, while Aidan Diltz also had 3 hits & drove in a run. Russ Golembe would also score 4 runs in the game as well. Evan Mello tossed a pair of shutout innings of relief in the setback.

In the second game the Gliders would get all 9 of their runs early with 4 in the first, & 5 more in the 3rd. This time the pitching would hold out in Horseheads as Cam Abele would scatter 7 hits & 2 earned runs over 5 innings, & Dillon Kelly tossed a pair of shutout frames fanning 5 along the way to close the door. Aidan Diltz had 3 more hits in game-2 while Liam Stonestreet & Carter hit had a pair of hits each. Reid Martin & Aidan Diltz both had doubles for the only 2 extra base hits for coach Barry Dean’s ballclub.

Heading into the final day of the regular season the only 2 teams who could possibly alter the play-off picture in the Western Division are Dansville & Olean. The Gliders host Salamanca on Saturday (July 20) at 5pm at Babcock Park for “Host Family Appreciation Day.” Meanwhile Olean visits Genesee in a 7pm clash with the Rapids. Entering the day the 3rd place Oilers (17-18) hold a 1-point lead over 4th seeded Dansville (16-18-1). If the Oilers win (or the Gliders lose) Olean would clinch the 3rd slot. Should the Gliders win (& Olean lose), Dansville would creep up the standings to # 3.

The Divisional Play-offs Open on Monday (July 22). The Gliders are assured of a home game, but the question will be will they play 5th seeded Salamanca or 6th seeded Horseheads. That picture should be clear when the results of Saturday’s games in the West are in.

Gliders’ 7-Run Third…Enough to Offset Olean

Dansville 11 Olean 7

The Dansville Gliders struck early with 7- runs in the 3rd inning Tuesday (July 16) night at Bradner Stadium, & held off Olean in the end by an 11-7 final in collegiate baseball action. The win inches coach Barry Dean’s ballclub into the 3rd place spot in the NYCBL’s Western Division with 4 games left in the regular season.

The Gliders would get a pair in the first when Reid Martin walked, stole 2 bases & an error opened the door for 2 unearned runs. In the big inning, Dansville would be opportunistic as a series of walks & hit batsmen set the stage for some aggressive base-running & a double by Justin Colpack, & base hits by Reid Martin, & Cooper Berry as the visitors grabbed a 9-2 lead. Cam Abele & Bryant Loving would drive in runs late in the game as the Oilers scored single runs in every inning except the 6th & 7th. Gavin Hardee would register the win in relief for Dansville…as Justin Hernandez would come out of the pen to get the final 2 outs.

The Gliders offense was led by Justin Colpack’s 3-5 night including a pair of doubles & an rbi. Reid Martin, Cooper Berry, & Bryan Loving each had 2 hits & drove in runs in the victory. Aidan Diltz had a hit to drive in a pair, while Cam Abele added a double & an rbi, Carter Shin, & Liam Stonestreet also had hits in a game that saw Dansville steal 6 bases on the night. Josh Wilson logged 3 hits for the Oilers, while 6 other players would also have multiple hit nights for Olean.

The Gliders head off to Veterans Park in Salamanca tonight for a single game at 7pm, then visit Horseheads Friday for a pair at 4pm before returning home on Saturday for “Host Family Appreciation Day” at the ballpark. You’ll hear that game live on 105.7 fm WDNY starting at 5pm. Last night’s win nearly assures the Gliders of hosting a 1st round play-off game at Babcock Park on Monday (July 22) night.

07/15/2024

Hoyt each had a pair of hits in the steamers victory while Wes Carter recorded the win pitching 6 innings scattering 4 hits, 1 earned run while striking out 3 & walking 1.

Hornell (23-7-1) visits Horseheads on Monday (July 15) morning in a 10:30am start. The Gliders (14-16-1) have a day off on Monday before hitting road Tuesday (July 16) to Olean for a 7pm date with the Oilers as the final week of the regular season unfolds
