Why Small Businesses Matter in Danbury made possible by Fairfield County Bank. Step inside VansPizza, located at 116 Newtown Road.
Four questions with Marketing Director, Laressa Gjonaj.
Q: Why did you start your business?
A: We started our business to create a unique gathering space where great food meets nostalgic fun. We wanted to bring something new to the area—a place where families can bond, friends can reconnect, and everyone can enjoy high-quality, chef-curated bar-style pizza paired with entertainment. With a love for both great food and arcade culture, we dreamed of a spot that combines the modern excitement of a redemption arcade with the retro charm of classic games.
Q: What is your best-selling product?
A: Our best-selling feature is our signature bar-style pizza, crafted with the help of culinary experts to deliver bold flavors and perfect crispiness. It's a favorite among all our guests, whether they’re here for family fun in the modern arcade or a trip down memory lane in the retro gaming section. Guests also love pairing our pizza with our specialty drink menu, making it a full dining and entertainment experience.
Q: How many local businesses do you use to support your business in terms of products and services? Can you name them?
A: We are thrilled to collaborate with two outstanding local businesses that have been instrumental in supporting our venture: the Danbury Arena and the La Quinta Hotel. Through these partnerships, we’ve created special offers that cater to game enthusiasts and hotel guests alike, enhancing their experiences while also building a strong sense of community. These collaborations reflect our commitment to supporting local businesses and creating a connected network of services for our customers.
Q: Have you reimagined your business?
A: As a new business, we’ve "reimagined" the traditional dining and entertainment experience by offering something for everyone. Our family-friendly redemption arcade appeals to kids and families, while our retro-style arcade taps into nostalgia for adults looking for a fun night out. By pairing this dual-arcade concept with our elevated bar-style pizza menu, we’ve created an innovative space that is equal parts delicious and entertaining. Our menu, curated by celebrated chefs, brings elevated food options to the table, ensuring that our guests enjoy a dining experience that is as exceptional as the entertainment we provide.

The New American Dream Foundation (TNADF) is excited to announce a special holiday meal delivery scheduled for Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 10:00 AM. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to provide nutritious meals and companionship to seniors in our community.
Thanks to the generosity of our community partners and the efforts of our volunteers, TNADF is proud to announce that we have delivered an impressive 7,740 meals to seniors in our community this year! This achievement would not have been possible without the support of organizations such as the NCL, Redding, and Ridgefield chapters, the Danbury Parking Authority, and the Amberoom Colonnade, as well as supplemental funding from the United Way of Coastal and Western Connecticut and our annual Gala.
We are thrilled to share that the Stella Rising Marketing Agency has generously donated 635 cookies to accompany our meal deliveries this week. Additionally, members from NCL and Newtown Savings Bank will be providing holiday cards for our clients.
Volunteers will gather at the Bardo Parking Garage to bag meals individually at 10:00 AM. Teams of two to four volunteers will then deliver meals to various senior living facilities in our community. Meals will be delivered to the following locations:
- Palace View: 132 Main Street
- Kimberly Place: 19 Main Street
- Danbury Towers: 40 Williams Street
- Augustana Homes: 88 Main Street
- Putnam Towers: 25 Beaver Street
- Glen Apartments: 25 Memorial Drive
- Crosby Manor: 84 West Wooster Street
- Danbury Commons: 51 Main Street
We invite community members to join our friendly visitor program by delivering meals and spreading joy to our seniors or by making a contribution. With just $6.00, you can purchase a meal for a senior. For $60, you can cover 10 meals; for $300, you can provide 50 meals; and for $600, you can cover meals for a large building or two small buildings.

Why Small Businesses Matter in Danbury made possible by Fairfield County Bank! Meet Erica Funke founder of Zoomin Groomin - Greater Danbury, CT 🐾🐾
🐕 I hear that you recently hit the road with your mobile pet spa! Tell me about how it’s going so far?
🦴It’s been an exciting first week! We’ve groomed big dogs, small dogs, nervous dogs, stubborn dogs and excited dogs…you never know exactly how they will react to the van and the grooming process. I’ve learned that I have an adaptable, patient and professional grooming team that is prepared to work within the dog’s needs and behavior, and still get the job done!
🐕What towns will you travel to?
🦴Zoomin Groomin (Greater Danbury) proudly serves Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, Georgetown, New Fairfield, Newtown, Ridgefield, Redding, Sandy Hook and Sherman.
🐕What was your inspiration for Zoomin Groomin?
🦴In 2023, I was laid off from my corporate job of over a decade at a local tech company. I experienced a very challenging year to follow, with both professional and personal loss, and it affected my mental health. There were days when the only thing that kept me going was my dog, Bruno. I started volunteering at a local animal shelter, walking the dogs each week, and it really helped me heal. The more time I spent with the dogs the more I knew that going back to the corporate world was not for me. Zoomin Groomin fulfills my desire to work with pet parents and their pups in a business focused on convenience and the well-being of the dogs. Getting groomed can be a stressful experience for many dogs, so any opportunity to help reduce this is beneficial. Seeing the looks on our clients' faces when we return their freshly groomed pup right at their door, with wagging tails, feels just as great as I imagined!
🐕How are you different from other mobile dog grooming businesses?
🦴Our goal is to offer a convenient grooming experience for pet parents and a stress-free environment for their beloved four-legged family members. We take our time to get each pup acquainted with the groomer, and move at a pace that will establish trust and safety. The groomer is hands-on with your dog the entire time and they will never be in a cage or crate. We can accommodate dogs of most breeds and sizes, which are especially a great option for seniors, big dogs, nervous or dog-reactive dogs, and pups with very busy humans! We customize our approach with each dog, and take the time to work with pet parents to ensure a positive experience. My professional background has always been rooted in customer service; something I highly value in business, instill in my staff, and will strive to deliver to our clients every day. We will treat your pup as if they are our own!

Why Small Businesses Matter made possible by Fairfield County Bank! Meet Mary and Jim Villamana Founders of Expedia Cruises!
Editor’s note: Mary, a native of Newtown and Jim, originally from Ridgefield, opened Connecticut’s first Expedia agency in early 2019 at 67 Federal Road in Brookfield.
** Why did you start your business?
As empty nesters, we wanted to travel more and see the world. It's a win-win for us to integrate that into our work. It's a fun and exciting industry, we enjoy sharing our experiences and passion for travel and want to help people plan their trips too.
**What are your most requested products or services?
Cruises is #1 followed by European land tours and all inclusive resorts. Our tagline is Air, Land and Sea vacations which sums it up well.
** Have you reimagined Expedia Cruises Brookfield?
Although Covid was an extremely difficult time for the travel industry, it gave us the opportunity to learn more about other sectors such as destination weddings and safaris. As a result, we have incorporated that more into our business.
