Additive manufacturing is unlocking new possibilities for architected porous materials with intricate geometries, but predicting their thermal performance remains challenging. Groundbreaking research uses COMSOL simulations to establish correlations between tortuosity and effective thermal conductivity in triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures, revealing how geometry type and solid volume fraction influence heat conduction in ways that can guide the design of next-generation heat transfer devices. Available in open access until February 1st under the editorial leadership of Prof. Wilson Chiu (UConn, UConn College of Engineering) and Prof. Helcio Rangel Barreto Orlande (UFRJ - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), this work bridges computational modeling with experimental validation.

Estimating heat flux at boundaries when sensors must be placed far from the source has been a persistent challenge, signal damping and delays make reconstruction difficult. Researchers have advanced the inverse ARX method by incorporating a delay parameter that enables accurate boundary condition estimation even when the signal is damped by up to ten times, though fast transients remain challenging to capture. Available in open access until February 1st under the editorial leadership of Prof. Wilson Chiu (University of Connecticut, UConn College of Engineering) and Prof. Helcio Rangel Barreto Orlande (UFRJ - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), this work addresses practical limitations in inverse heat conduction problems with computational efficiency.

Thermal Thursdays 🔥 | Steam Tables

Steam tables are the backbone of thermal reasoning. As a fundamental tool for engineers and scientists, they appear early in thermodynamics education - but their importance only grows with experience.

Why they matter:
• They link phase behavior to energy transfer
• They underpin cycle efficiency analysis (Rankine, refrigeration, etc.)
• They help engineers determine enthalpy, entropy, and saturation states in real systems

Understanding supercritical fluid behavior in rocket engine combustion chambers is critical for next-generation propulsion systems, where thermophysical properties can change dramatically over millimeters. New large-eddy simulations reveal how swirl number variations create precessing vortex cores and unexpectedly alter jet characteristics in ways that matter for injector design. Available in open access until February 1st under the editorial leadership of Prof. Wilson Chiu (UConn, UConn College of Engineering) and Prof. Helcio Rangel Barreto Orlande (UFRJ - Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), this OpenFOAM-based study provides crucial insights for cryogenic rocket engine development.

Accurately simulating phase change heat transfer requires careful consideration of numerical parameters, particularly the mushy-zone constant, which can dramatically affect predictions. New research using COMSOL and FLUENT reveals how this often-overlooked parameter impacts melting simulations, demonstrating that choosing the wrong value can either slow predicted melting rates or produce unphysical results entirely. Available in open access until February 1st under the editorial leadership of Prof. Wilson Chiu (UConn, UConn College of Engineering) and Prof. Helcio Rangel Barreto Orlande (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ), this study provides crucial guidance for engineers modeling thermal energy storage and phase change materials.
