Meet the Editor: Dr. Zhuomin Zhang, Pioneering Nanoscale Thermal Science
Dr. Zhuomin Zhang, Editor-in-Chief of the Annual Review of Heat Transfer, leads Georgia Tech's Nanoscale Thermal Radiation Laboratory where he explores the fundamental physics of energy transport at dimensions where conventional heat transfer theories break down.
As the J. Erskine Love, Jr. Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Zhang's research addresses critical challenges in:
• Nanoscale thermal radiation and near-field radiative heat transfer
• Thermophysical properties at micro and nanoscales
• Surface phonon polaritons and photonic crystals
• Thermophotovoltaic energy conversion
• Radiation thermometry for rapid thermal processing
His work bridges theory and experiment - from developing sophisticated measurement techniques using goniometric optical systems to advancing theoretical understanding of electron and phonon transport in small structures. This interdisciplinary approach, combining physics, materials science, and thermal engineering, has produced breakthrough insights into radiative properties of superconducting films, semiconductor surfaces, and metamaterials.
The impact: Over 17,000 citations of his research, recognition as Fellow of ASME (2005), AAAS (2011), and APS (2015), plus major awards including the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award in Science and ICHMT Hartnett-Irvine Award.
His leadership extends throughout the community - founding the ASME Committee on Nanoscale Thermal Transport, chairing international conferences, and serving on editorial boards of leading journals. Multiple graduate students under his mentorship have received Best Thesis awards.
We're privileged to have Dr. Zhang guiding the Annual Review of Heat Transfer as the field continues evolving into new frontiers of nanotechnology and energy systems.
