Several reporters and photographers from the Daily Campus traveled to North Carolina to report at the ACC Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 7. Our photographers captured the energy leading up to the game, the emotions in Bank of America Stadium and the intense action on the field as the SMU Mustangs took on the Clemson Tigers. While the Mustangs came up short, their postseason journey isn’t over as they head to the College Football Playoffs for the first time in program history. They will face Penn State on Saturday, Dec. 21st at 11am CT.

The Mustangs fell just short of the ACC Championship title, with Clemson sealing the game on a record-breaking 56-yard field goal in the final seconds. Despite the loss, SMU’s incredible fourth-quarter rally proved this team never quits. Ultimately, the committee chose SMU to hold the final spot in the CFP. The Mustangs will take on Penn State at the Nittany Lions’ home field in Pennsylvania on Dec. 21 at 11 a.m. CT.

The Mustangs fell short in Charlotte, losing the ACC Championship to the Clemson Tigers 34-32. With a rough beginning in the first half, SMU battled back to tie the game in the final minutes. A final field goal from Clemson put them ahead by three points to win the game. But this isn’t the end for the Mustangs.

In their inaugural ACC season, SMU found success early on. With an undefeated conference record and a ACC Coach of the Year title for Rhett Lashlee, the Mustangs proved they were a contender in this conference. The CFP will be selecting who be in the playoffs.

SMU took on Penn State in the first round of the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. DC reporter Sydney Strollo recaps the day with game footage, from the team’s arrival to the end of the game. Despite a 38-10 loss, SMU football made history this season—a chapter the university will forever cherish. We look forward to the future of the program and what else is to come. Everyone knows Kevin Jennings as the breakout quarterback for the Mustangs but what else is there to know?
