George Brand’s 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona

The story of this long-lost Shelby Cobra Daytona is as dramatic as the racecar itself. This was the first of six cars that Shelby built in collaboration with Peter Brock to take on the aerodynamic racecars of Ferrari. This car is the most special of the lot as it was the only car Carroll Shelby built in America. The other five were completed in Italy. This particular specimen, the CSX2287, set a few land speed records and then retired. It was sold numerous times until it finally ended in the hands of Donna O'Hare.

However, since her ownership, the car was hidden away from the road and the public. Many approached her, including Mr. Shelby, to learn about the vehicle and even buy it, but she surprisingly even refused its existence! After she tragically passed away, the car came to light, and so did its dodgy ownership. A legal battle ensued, and finally, the car's ownership was awarded to Kurt Goss, Donna's close relative. But by then, her mother had already sold off the car for $4 million. Goss got a settlement amount of $800,000. Hagerty states this iconic Ferrari rival is worth an astonishing $24.8 million for a good-condition model.

Stamatis Kokotas’ Lamborghini Miura

The Lamborghini Miura was the world's first production sports car to position the rear-mounted engine before the rear axle. It was a learning curve for all "experienced" supercars of the time. Its iconic V12 is also a legend, having survived for over half a century. The last iteration of it was seen in the Lamborghini Murcielago. The Miura, in short, is a legend of the supercar world.

Seeing a car of such stature abandoned and layered with dust is shocking. But this particular bespoke-parts-packed Miura has a cool story to it. This Lambo was a gift to rally driver cm singer Stamatis Kokotas by Greek millionaire Aristotle Onassis.

This metallic brown Miura P400S had optional features like air-conditioning and electric windows. But the coolest features are its bespoke steering wheel badging and a set of rally lights laid out at the bottom of the front bumper. This car popped up at Coys Auction in 2012 but failed to meet the reserve. The trail has since gone cold. Today, a good-condition 1969 Lambo Miura P400 S is worth over $2 million, per Hagerty Valuations.

Jaguar XJ220

This abandoned Jaguar XJ220 came in as quite the shocker when images of this rare British supercar were circulated on the internet in 2010. Snapped by a UAE-based auto magazine, Crank and Piston, one-of-281 XJ220s is seen lying abandoned on the side of a road, covered in dust and grime. The car is said to be a low-mileage XJ220 with just 560 miles on the odo. It has been over 14 years since we saw this painful set of images. There hasn't been a credible update on what happened to the car and its fate today.

Claimed to be from Qatar, this abandoned XJ220 is now worth over $600,000 for a pristine-condition model, according to Hagerty Valuation. The XJ220 was Jaguar's first-ever supercar that took the fight to the likes of the Porsche 959 and the Ferrari F40.

Yamaha Nearly Built A McLaren F1 Rival In the 1990s

McLaren's F1 hypercar was one of the most significant models to debut in the 1990s. It set a performance standard that many cars produced in the same period and models would follow. The model's V12 engine was one of the most notable aspects of the British hypercar, which kicked off a hypercar lineage that has recently been revived.

The rivals that contested the McLaren F1 included the Porsche 911 GT1, Ferrari F50, Bugatti EB110 Supersport, and Jaguar XJ220. However, a potential name that would have been introduced in that high-performance market would have been the Yamaha OX99-11.

Yamaha's McLaren F1 rival was introduced because the Japanese manufacturer desired to apply the knowledge and experience gained from its ventures in Formula One to a no-holds-barred road-going hypercar. Yamaha's entry into, as they called it, the apex of racing began in 1988, in collaboration with Zakspeed Formula Racing to start the West Zakspeed Yamaha Formula One team. The F1 car that would pioneer the firm's aspirations was powered by a 3.5-liter, 75-degree dual overhead cam V8 engine that featured five valves per cylinder and could generate a maximum output of over 600 hp. This engine was called the OX88 engine and was used for the 1989 Formula One season.

This engine was succeeded by the OX99 engine, which was introduced in 1991. It had a similar displacement and featured five valves per cylinder. The notable change was the move to a 70-degree engine that relied on a twelve-cylinder engine instead of an eight-cylinder engine. Yamaha's engines would be used across the Formula One grid, appearing in over 100 races, and the Japanese manufacturer would serve as an engine for eight years after it entered Formula One in 1989.

This stint in Formula One gave Yamaha valuable experience and expertise, which Yamaha intended to leverage in the creation of the Yamaha OX99-11, which would bring the driving experience of Formula One and imbue it in a road car and whose name came as a result of the use of a detuned version of the OX99 V12 racing engine. Two British companies would be involved in developing the Yamaha OX99-11, a subsidiary of Yamaha called Ypsilon Technology that was purposed to service the manufacturer's F1 engines and International Auto Design (IAD). The first was tasked with assembling the supercar, while the latter was responsible for its design and development.

Saleen S7 Twin Turbo (248 mph)

Californian Mustang tuner Steve Saleen’s stunning S7 never stepped out of the shadows of its contemporary counterparts, the Dodge Viper and the Ford GT. Yet the S7 was in many ways the working-class American supercar: a simple spaceframe fitted with a Ford Windsor small-block V8 amidships and stretched to 7-liters (hence the S7’s name); that was a racecar first and a production car second. Fitted with a pair of Garrett turbos, in 2005 the S7TT produced 750 HP and 700 lb-ft. A 1,000 hp Competition package followed in 2006 to make it the only other four-digit horsepower car alongside the Bugatti Veyron, which saw a sub-10-second quarter mile and a 248 mph top speed, making it one of the fastest production cars of its time.

Tesla Roadster (250+ mph, claimed)

Given Tesla’s meteoric rise from obscurity to EV dominance over the past 15 years, it’s impossible to ignore them. However, it’s equally impossible to be skeptical about some of the claims made about the will-they-won’t-they-make-it second-gen Tesla Roadster, which was announced as far back as 2017 but was once again delayed by Elon Musk as recently as October. We were promised a 1.0-second 0-60 mph sprint time from the hotter SpaceX version, an 8.88-second quarter mile and, yes, a 250 mph top speed. And we’ll just keep quiet about its alleged ability to fly.
