Episode 331: The Murders of Kathleen Jo Henry and Veronica Abouchuk

Two beloved women went missing, and their families searched for them desperately. With no leads, the cases almost went cold. Then a third woman was struggling and looking for a ride in Anchorage, Alaska in 2019 when a man picked her up. Inside his truck, she made a horrible discovery that promised to finally solve both cases.

7. Valerie Casler was a key witness in the case against Brian Smith

8. Cassandra Boskofsky was officially declared dead in September 2024

9. Cassandra’s family has protested, asking Anchorage PD to investigate her murder in connection with Smith

10. After an interrogation about Kathleen’s murder, Brian Smith told troopers he was going to “make them famous” with his next confession

11. In video recordings played in court, Smith can be heard torturing one victim, saying, “In my movie, everyone dies.”

12. Organizations like the Alaska Native Women’s Resource Center are working to spread awareness and empower communities to work with law enforcement to end the high rates of violence in the AI/AN community. Visit their website at aknwrc.org (link in stories) for ways to help.

Their legal arguments go nowhere. Their encounters with law enforcement often turn deadly. From fake IDs and fraudulent deeds to murder in cold blood, sovereign citizens are a growing threat. So why do people keep buying into this complex belief system and just what exactly do they believe?

1. Sovereign citizens use various iconography and logos like this one featuring the Punisher and reference to the Uniform Commercial Code

2. They often use odd language in court like this man in Montana who refused to recognize the authority of the judge or attorney

3. An example of the Quit Claim Deeds that sovereign citizens use to squat in abandoned properties

4. They often post signage warning police to stay away

5. Sovereign citizens are often identified by the illegitimate license plates they purchase online or make themselves

6. Nathaniel, Gareth, and Stacey Train were Australian sovereign citizens whose run-in with authorities turned deadly in 2022

7. The Trains’ property was in an isolated area in Wieambilla, Queensland

8. KMac El-Bey, born Kyran Caples, identified as Moorish and adopted the surname El-Bey, common with the group

9. He carried this homemade ID card

10. Self-proclaimed Moorish sovereign citizen Cory Cobb-Bey (no relation) fatally shot Dallas Police Officer Darron Burks in cold blood in August 2024

11. Cobb-Bey also shot a responding officer in the face with this rifle

12. His writing on a 2017 ticket shows Cobb-Bey believed he was above the law

13. Patrick Hurst, a sovereign citizen from Harris County, Texas, livestreamed his final moments on Facebook before engaging in a fire fight with police in 2024

Episode 329: The Death Penalty’s Accomplice - Dr. James Grigson ⚖️ We’re discussing the man Vanity Fair called “Dr. Death” and opposing parties called “a killing machine.”

With his slow Texas twang and sweet demeanor, Dr. Grigson could convince any jury that a defendant “would absolutely kill again” despite having no ability to predict the future. Scores of defendants were put to death in Texas, largely based on his testimony, even as the American Psychiatric Association criticized his methods.

2. He was a favorite of district attorneys around Texas for his stellar tract record convincing juries to choose the death penalty

3. Randall Dale Adams was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to die based on Dr. Grigson’s testimony

4. Filmmaker Errol Morris set out to make a documentary on Grigson when he stumbled upon the Adams case and shifted the film’s direction, resulting in “The Thin Blue Line”

5. Adams participated in Morris’ film and eventually wrote a book about his experience

6. Grigson testified against Gayland Bradford, the third trial in two days of marathon testimony

7. The doctor had a special way with hold-out jurors, often manipulating them with personal information

8. Grigson practiced until his 2003 retirement

"The judge has found there is enough evidence to proceed to trial against officials with the Philadelphia Police Department and Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office."

A judge has permitted the parents of Ellen Greenberg, a Manayunk teacher who died in 2011, to go to trial against several city officials for emotional distress.
