Warhog
HEAVY METAL
DALLAS, TEXAS (2020)

Line up:
Eric Kendall –guitar
Scott Beetley – guitar, vocals
Justin Hopper – bass
Ben Davidoff - drums

"Eric and Scott started developing ideas remotely during COVID lockdown, not necessarily with the intention of starting a band, but just to write and be productive. After we’d written a handful of songs, we started talked about the next steps…releasing music, playing shows. Eventually we put the full band together and moved forward from there.''

1. How did the band name come about?
WARHOG -
"Eric had been uploading his unfinished ideas to SoundCloud and was using a bunch of random fantasy-themed images for each song. One of them was like a humanoid boar with an axe or something and I think one of us referred to him as “the warhog guy” and it just kinda stayed around when it came time to thinking up band names."

2. How would you describe the music you typically create?
WARHOG
'Riff driven, melodic metal. We really try to make our music accessible to all listeners. It’s important to us that people can immediately discern what we’re doing, so we try to start from a more mainstream foundation and then pack elements on top of that. You know, whenever you’re in a bar or venue, there’s maybe 25% of the people that are there to see you and then everyone else is just stuck there waiting to see someone else. We’re writing music for the other 75%. Our friends come to see us no matter what we play, so we’re performing for the people that aren’t, to be honest."

3. What are some of the band's influences?
WARHOG -
"It’s cliché, but our influences are all over the place. We all listen to so much stuff and some of it is weirder than others. You could basically pick any episode of MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball from the mid 90’s and just go, “all of that, whatever that was,” but that would only paint half the picture.'

4. Where all has the band performed?
WARHOG -
"Our first couple of shows were at Six Springs in Richardson. We’ve played Reno’s in Deep Ellum. Right now we’re operating out of O’Riley’s in Northeast Dallas. We play there about once every 90 days or so. We’re trying to build up an audience in Arlington and we like Growl so we played there earlier in the year and have another show coming up there on June 24. We’d really like to get on a bill in Ft. Worth at some point. We know Ft. Worth has an active scene, so it’d be cool to introduce ourselves to the folks on the West side of the metroplex. We’ve talked to a couple of bands about it, just trying to find a good fit."

5. What upcoming shows are we looking forward to?
WARHOG:
"Right now we’re taking a month or so off to track the new EP that we’re going to try and have out in August. We’ll be playing Growl in Arlington on June 24 with VeiN and a new band called Infinity Vein. After that, we’ll be at O’Riley’s August 12th and then again on October 28th. So, if anyone out there wants to put us on a bill in Ft. Worth this fall, hit us up."

6. Can you tell me more about any recent or upcoming releases?
WARHOG -
"Our first release 'Call of the Voyager' turns a year old in August, so we’re hoping to release an EP of new material this August. It’s important to us that we stay as productive as possible when it comes to new music and we have a fairly aggressive writing/recording/releasing schedule ahead of us. The songs for the EP are written and arranged and guitars are pretty much done. We need to capture drums, vocals, and guitar solos. We’ll drop two singles ahead of the full EP and then we’ll try and release another EP in the fall and then the third EP in early 2024. Originally, we had planned to release these songs as a full-length album but we wanted to experiment with staggered, smaller releases. This time around, we’ll be experimenting with that approach and seeing how that goes. The album was going to be called 'The Dystopian Chronicles,' so we’ll use that title and release the EPs as Volume I, Volume II, and Volume III. Look for 'The Dystopian Chronicles: Volume I' to come out in August. Maybe a single in mid July, hopefully."

7. If I was new to the band... What proper introduction (album, song, era) would you suggest I start with?
WARHOG -
'“Call of the Voyager' is the only place to start. It’s a 74-minute concept album, so it’s meant to be taken in as a whole piece of music. The songs tell the story about a warrior nomad who is called to fight against an ancient evil and what happens when he fails and how he ultimately redeems himself."

WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT:
"Focus on supporting your scene as part of your endeavors. The healthier the scene, the more fun you’ll have."

04/10/2023

Let's welcome this week's TxMC featured artist, Abilene's cinematic, THE DEATH OF ZENITH.

The Death of Zenith
ALTERNATIVE METAL
Abilene, Texas (2022)

INFLUENTIAL:
Trent Reznor, Mike Patton, Radiohead, Pantera, Skinny Puppy, Stone Sour, Mushroomhead, Stabbing Westward, David Bowie.

BIO for TxMC:
"Cinematic, Emotionally driven, and Story Driven. Vision based and usually somewhat conceptual. Heavy, but in a really dynamic way. Tons of melody. Lots of electronics. Hints of industrial, nu metal, trap, thrash, I've done everything from a rap metal track with a crew of horror core artists to a David Bowie cover with the artist, Silhouette Death. I hope it's substance over style honestly. At the end of the day it will always represent the music that interests me in that current moment and that most appropriately conveys the emotional content I'm writing about. It will always be rock or metal based to some extent I would imagine, but it will always mix a lot of different things in as well. The Death of Zenith is what I jokingly refer to as a 'collaborative solo project.' I started it in 2022 as my old band, EMZY ENZY was coming to a close and as my record label, Solunar Records was gearing up. About a year and a half ago I moved back to Abilene from Austin, where EMZY ENZY was based, in order to shoot a film that has been a pipe dream of mine for over 20 years called Overnight. It's a very personal and somewhat autobiographical story and I felt it was important to shoot it in my hometown. Through Solunar Records, I am producing and curating a two-part soundtrack compilation album featuring a plethora of artists from all over the world. The first half can be purchased now at Solunar Records' Bandcamp/website. The second half we hope will be out this summer The film is undergoing some reshoots and will be eyeing a 2024 release for Feb 14th to go along with our 'Happy Unvalentine's Day' theme held ad campaign. I knew that my music would be sprinkled throughout the soundtrack amongst the other artists. At the time these discussions started, I thought it was going to be my old band, EMZY ENZY. Then that band ended. This is a big project with a lot of people and I really wanted to avoid it becoming the 'Caleb Straus' show. I didn't want to look at the track listing and see that name all over the place so I did one single under my own name along with Felicia Patterson, and after that is when I came up with the idea for The Death of Zenith, originally as just a pen name for the music I was doing on this soundtrack. As I've worked on more music and am currently working with more and more collaborators, the project has taken a life of its own as they often do. I'm now planning a string of singles, a full-length self-titled album and a covers album over the next few years, all of which have nothing to do with Overnight. The Death of Zenith is a direct result of the founding of Solunar Records and the making of the film, Overnight. Currently I have the 'Striped Souls' EP which is a sneak peak of my contributions to the Overnight Soundtrack. It features the single "Portal" with Genre Fluid Canadian Metal artist Sam Astaroth on lead vocals, a cover of dance artist Above & Beyond's "Sun and Moon" done as a rock song, which features Blood of the Beloved member Skeptik on some lead guitar parts, who is my labelmate from Solunar. Those two songs can be found on the "Overnight Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, Side A: Sun" release on the official Solunar Bandcamp. The last two songs on the EP, 'Runaway' with horror core producer Ritual of Ether as composer, and the song 'A Brighter Place' which I did entirely will be on the second half of the soundtrack, 'Side B: Moon' which drops this summer. All four songs are thematically linked to the story of Overnight."

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT:
"For me, I can't emphasize enough the importance on finding your own voice. if there's an area I feel like our genre and scene falls short at times, it's that there are far too many artists and bands trying to mimic the sound another band created or perfected instead of getting weird and coming up with something fresh. To me, the whole point of being a musician is to create sounds that haven't been heard before, or at least that haven't been heard in the context you are presenting them in. The artists that have enjoyed longevity have always been the ones who have the kind of identity where there is no mistaking them for anyone else. That may sound like you're shooting for the stars but if you're going to play music, shoot for that. Yes, it will take time, but for me it's the only reason worth playing. Most of the time it's just a matter of being brutally honest with yourself."

Thank you Caleb Straus.

Brad BRINGER OF LIGHT -
"Thanks for having me and thanks for the opportunity to gain a tremendous amount of exposure. I’ve been a member of TXMC for a while now and I’ve found many friends, contributors, bands I dig and true metal lovers. Really appreciate it. Here’s a quick teaser for the latest release, in case anyone wants a QUICK TASTE: https://youtu.be/ZQKIVblFiI4."

Brad -
"I’ve been in many projects over the last 10 or 12 years – usually some flavor of metal, usually on vocals… but Also bits of reggae and a kid’s music project as well… with those I lean more towards guitar, songwriting, and production. I’ve wanted to get a Deathcore-type project out there for a handful of years, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to join a group as vocalist or if I wanted to focus more on the guitar end. Eventually, I heard a killer EDM track, 'FROM LIQUID' by Mr.kitty, AND I thought 'Whoa – this song is amazing and I think I want to pay tribute to it and do a one-off deathcore cover.'… So, I did. I found a couple guys in the DFW music scene, one I’ve known for years and used to play shows with back in Florida – one on drums, one on vocals, and I played guitar/bass/synth and added some backing vocals and production. I believe that was in 2020. It was a lot of fun and I really liked how it turned out, so I wrote a few songs and asked the same two guys to participate. We did that for a little while and, you know, life can get in the way sometimes. They both had other projects going on and eventually I needed to forge ahead. The latest release is just me. I sat on an ep for about a year before deciding it was too good to keep waiting. So, I just outsourced the drum tracks and did everything else myself. I’ve been the vocalist in so many bands, I was reluctant to write lyrics or record vocals, but it only took about two weeks once I got started. Fortunately, this is my best work. Songwriting, performance, and production. I’m really proud of it."

Where is the bands city now?
BRAD -
"DFW! More specifically, Denton County."

Who are the current members and what instruments do they play?
BRAD -
"It’s just me at the moment."

What Genre / Sub-genre would you classify yourselves as?
BRAD -
"Originally, I just said it’s 'deathcore-ish with some melodic vocals here and there,' however, some early reviews called it American Industrial Deathcore – and honestly, I think that’s a pretty good fit. I don’t try to cram in as much of the orchestration as a lot of the current deathcore mainstays, I prefer to have orchestral and electronic stuff – but more on the industrial side of things. I really like the guitars and drums to pack a punch, so a lot of those extras are just that, extra."

How did the band name come about?
BRAD -
"Honestly, I think the first place I heard the term 'BRINGER OF LIGHT' it was a biblical reference. Book of Genesis if I’m not mistaken. I like to fuse a lot of elements from all over the musical spectrum into this music – some stuff that many deathcore bands wouldn’t want to add – and something about the name was interesting to me. As I researched its origins, I learned that there are scholars out there that argue the accepted interpretation is wrong. Regardless of what was truly meant in the bible, depending on who you ask, it means Lucifer, the bringer of knowledge, or Jesus. That seems like quite a blend of beliefs, right? Again, regardless of the validity, I just thought, 'wow… you can’t really get two more opposite views' and loved the dichotomy of it. I had the vague image of an iconic logo somehow incorporating a triangle (the 'strongest' shape, structurally speaking) and a circle."

How would you describe the music you typically create?
BRAD -
"What are some of the band's influences? Well, for years, I’ve been a huge fan of Fear Factory. I think I have been trying to get Dino’s tone and picking technique since I was like, 20. I’ve been trying to get closer to that really tight kick/snare/guitar percussive synergy and production. I think my internal dialogue when thinking about what I wanted the end product to sound like was 'What if Fear Factory were a modern deathcore band?' And I have to tell you, when you listen to the latest release, 'Anthology I' you’ll probably hear exactly that. I think my other favorite band that gets most of my listening time since about 2019 is Cattle Decapitation. I really, really like the last three albums or so. Add in some Acacia Strain and Thy Art is Murder-type stuff, and boom – you get something like Bringer of Light. I’m actually a studio-only project for the moment. I write and record out of my home studio (TBOLT STUDIOS) and I’ve always been of the thinking that if there’s enough interest, maybe I’ll get some dudes together and play live. I’ve talked with some buddies in Eyes of Ares about partnering up to make a live show work – we’ve just never fully committed to it. Everyone’s busy – work, kids, yada yada. Or, we get in a room and start working on new s**t, not practicing the existing s**t. Also, now that I’m doing vocals, I don’t really know exactly what I would do live. For this project, I would really rather focus on guitar and maybe backing vocs live, but that would mean needing to find someone to train up on parts that I wrote and recorded, which can sometimes be a challenge. Not that the parts are extraordinarily difficult, but a lot of guys want to do their own thing. I get both sides of the coin. I’ve been in both positions before."

Can you tell me more about any recent or upcoming releases?
BRAD -
"Yes! I love this release. It’s on all the platforms. This is about half of a group of songs I wrote in late 2021. I love finding hidden connections everywhere. I love concept albums. The prior ep, 'Dexter…and the Code of Harry' was a 3-song piece diving into the series and character of Dexter, the serial killer. From there, I wanted to branch out a little bigger with a similar concept. Enter 'Anthology'. So now, the themes are from TV, Video Games, Books, children’s shows, etc. (Soprano’s, Dexter New Blood, Cocomelon and HALO for this release). Timewise, it worked out really well and I was able to release my favorite part of my catalog on my 40th birthday. Felt good! On the upcoming 'Anthology II' which will continue the trend, I have a few guys in TX deathcore bands lined up split some vocal work and I’ve even had a conversation with Burton C Bell, formerly vocalist of Fear Factory, to join me on a song. Looking forward to getting more traction there soon."

“117” - This song starts with a cool little tapping part that is just ultra melodic. Moves into some very mean riffs and the theme is based on the Halo franchise. I’ve been a huge fan of Halo, games, books, you name it. I used a lot of the deep lore in the lyrics - including conversations between the different species.
I also included an odd musical turn mid-song and recorded a very clean harmonized vocal melody - probably the best vocal harmony I’ve ever written or performed if I’m being honest. It was one of those times where you’re like “F**k, what goes here, what goes here?” and you just try something. I did that and upon listen back I was just like “holy s**t - that’s it… wait, I hear more…” and went in for the layered harmony. I really like that part and I’m way too proud of it for how short and insignificant it really is.

“Saints of Newark” - I purchased my first 8 string from Harley Benton to test it out, and the opening riff to this song was just the first thing I played on that guitar. I thought it was quirky and odd, but once fully produced and mixed with drums and bass, it sounded straight up violent. I noodled for a while on what theme I could use for just sheer violence and brutality without going down the traditional death metal gore route. So, I landed on Sopranos. There’s a lot of brutal content between the series and the recent prequal. Just some brutal stuff. I ended up having a buddy of mine, Scott, from Eyes of Ares sit in with me on some production stuff - he put in this simple keyboard part under that intro riff, which inspired me to layer a few harmonized clean vocals under it. Just turned out really well. This one has some strong Fear Factory vibes.

“New Blood Headcanon” - This track features some simple but hooky and mean guitar riffs. The lyrical content pretty much came from a place of frustration and hope. I liked a lot of the new Dexter series, “New Blood”... but I didn’t love what they did in the final few minutes. Felt like a waste. However, it could be saved. I have this head canon about what could be done in season two and I thought - “ok, I’ll pay homage to my homie Mike, who did vocals on the first EP about Dexter by continuing the story here, in my own way”.
So basically, I like the idea that Dexter’s son lied to him and was hunting him from the start. Harrison needed to gain Dexter’s trust, but inside, he’s got a dark passenger of his own, Trinity Killer. And Trinity tells him to kill his mom and hunt his dad down for being “bad people”. I would love to see a season two where all of that is revealed and the saga continues.

"COCOMELON". These kids shows… they want to watch them a million times. This song was written about the earworms getting in your head! Also, my son tried to say "bah bah black sheep" but it was coming out as "bah bah bishhhhh", and I just liked that and thought it should go in the song.

Is there anything you would like to say to your fellow musicians coming on board the metal genre?
BRAD -
"Great question. Make sure you have your finances in order (try to land a decent career) just in case you aren’t the next Metallica. Don’t make risky financial decisions. Try to learn your tone and how to improve it early. It’s not always about what equipment you have."

"Also, if you like Fear Factory, Dino has been amazing to me. He helped me find one of his signature guitars that was completely sold out across the globe. Then, he was cool enough to do this: Dino says..."

Mitch Long - GUITARS
Caesar Leza - GUITARS
Colby Rodgers - DRUMS (temporarily filling in at live shows.)
CURRENTLY SEEKING PERMANENT DRUMMER

Influences:
Rigor Mortis, Ozzy, Metallica, Slayer

ABOUT PASS THE AMMUNITION:
"Pass the Ammunition is a force to be reckoned with. They label themselves Hybrid Metal because whatever metal they put out...They will kick it's ass. The band's name came to Donell when he woke up and the saying "Praise the Lord. Pass the Ammunition" remained in his head since the first time he heard it. (Ammunition being the Music.) So he thought it was cool. Pass the Ammunition played their first show opening for the almighty Accept. They are hoping to play a couple of shows before they go back to the studio this June to record their 3rd album/EP "Collateral Damage." If you are new to the band, I'd say watch the "All is Fair" video and the new "Self-defense" video. Actually, I'd tell you to listen to both Album/EP's."

MESSAGE FOR THE FOLLOWERS:
"To all the fans... We would like to say... The best is yet to come. The new stuff is gonna kick some dick!"

HUGE WELCOME HOME to this week's TxMC featured band: Rear Naked Choke

Subgenre: TEXAS METAL
Origin: Abilene, Texas (2011)

Line up:
Mick Taylor - Vocals
Chris Summers - Guitar and backing Vocals
Joshua Finch - Lead Guitar
Paul Kidd - Drums and Backing Vocals
Don Bruton - Bass

IMPACTS e.g.-
Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Mastodon, Clutch, Pantera.

Rear Naked Choke was founded by Mike “Mookie” Morgan, Mick Taylor, and Cody Henry. Although pieced together in Abilene, they all agree that all of Texas is home to them. Best known for their heavy grooves in songs such as "Su***de Betsy" and "I Will Rise," their outrageous stage performances have already made their way through the states of Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Nebraska. As for right now, they are working on finishing the new EP. Booking shows to support that release is definitely on their agenda.

NEW RELEASES FOR 2023:
Mick - "We will be releasing a single and video very soon for the song 'American Screams.' The new music has a definite evolution to it. We have been working with CJ Pierce again but more in a mentor and advisor role on the new EP. We are sure that this project is a great advancement to our sound and overall presence as a Texas Metal band."

Chris - "We released our self titled album about 2 years ago, we’re currently in the studio finishing up a new EP that we are hoping to have out in the spring or early summer. We also have most of the next EP written and we’ll be going into the studio to get it rolling once we get the current one done."

COMING UP WITH A BAND NAME:
Chris - We’re fans of Mixed Martial Arts/UFC and we would watch the fights at Mike's house, and in between fights we’d go back and jam. Joe Rogan was doing commentary for the fight and he said 'Oh, he has him in a Rear Naked Choke, that’s the #1 finishing move in MMA.' then Mike and Mick looked at the each other and said, 'That’s the band name.'"

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT:
Rear Naked Choke-"We appreciate every person that comes to see us, follows us, and listens to our music. Likewise we’ve played with some amazing artists and bands so far. Every time we try to learn from them, anything from gear to staging, to lights, to music arrangements or tones, or anything really. So for bands coming up we say do the same, ask questions when you play with other bands and you see them doing something that you would like to know more about."

You can find us on most social media, YouTube Spotify etc. Go to www.RNCtheBand.com to find links.

Kevin Crawley - Bass / Vocals
Charlie McBride - Guitars

Perceived was formed in Dallas, Texas in May of 2018 by Charlie, Kevin, and Chris. Pulling from life experiences and emotionally driven music creations, Perceived has now been playing all over the great state of Texas. You can catch them live this weekend along with friends like Skybaus, Last of the Sane, The Confessionist, and Awaken to Remember.

UPCOMING SHOW:
October 28, 2022
HALLOWEEN BASH 22' at The Haltom Theater
Haltom Theater
5601 E. Belknap Street
Haltom City, Texas
*Discounted Tickets available at perceivedband.com

PERCEIVED:
"Someone once said we sound like alternative metal. You can definitely hear our influences from 90's rock. I was searching band names for about two weeks. Every name we came up with, someone else already had it. Then I thought of Perceived. I searched it and nobody had that one. So I reached out to the guys and they hated it. It took a little convincing but eventually it stuck and now we think it's perfect. We each have a ton of influences. Collectively though I'd say Nirvana, Pantera, Metallica, and Tool just to name a few. It's been almost two years since we released our debut EP but we have completed writing our next album. We also have a video coming out soon for our single Darkening. We're working with our good friend Nick Forkel on that who also mixed and mastered our EP. So be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel so you don't miss the video premiere. CD'S are available on our Bandcamp page as well as Perceivedband.com while supplies last."

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT:
"Get out there and support other bands when you're not playing. Go to their live shows, buy their merch, and stay until the end of the night. This playing and immediately leaving after your set is only hurting the scene that we're all trying so hard to build. We have to do this together. To the fans that continue to come out to see live shows, thank you. None of this is possible without y'all."

Thank you Perceived.

CUT THE TONGUE:
"Our sound is super heavy! Deathmetal with a splash of slam and deathcore. The band name just sounded cool. Plus the imagery we were coming up with fit it really well. We are getting ready to play shows for next year and just dropped a single with Stephen Mashburn of 'I am Destruction' and are making a 3 song demo and are also in the works of recording our new EP with the new line up. This week Texas Metal Connection will feature the old school heavy metal band METONIC. Don't forget to tune in Tomorrow and every Tuesday 8pm - Midnight for The Metal Meltdown. Only on Deep Dallas Radio! (Link below) Thanks for reading. 🤘

Metonic
OLD SCHOOL HEAVY METAL
Fort Worth, Texas (2019)

LINE UP:
Rich Stafford - Lead Vocals/Guitar
Hazer Hilliard - Lead Guitar
Derek Allen - Bass
Joe Miranda - Drums

Founded in 2019 by Rich Stafford, Metonic comes at us with a modern twist to the very prestigious Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Black Sabbath. After parting ways with Iron Jaw in 2019, Rich started looking for like-minded musicians and eventually the Metonic lineup was complete.

Metonic:
"We have played at many of the best venues in the DFW area including Amplified Live, Haltom Theatre, Renos, Witts End, Big Rob’s, The Rail Club, Mavericks in Arlington, Six Springs Tavern, O’Rielly’s Pub, and the Ridglea Room. Next up is the Rail Club on Nov 11 and then O’Rielly’s on Dec 2, 2022. Our most recent release is called 'The Priest.' It’s a 7 song LP recorded at Session Works Studios in Hurst, Texas. We have CDs for sale at shows. We are also available on all streaming platforms and have been played on radio worldwide via our record label, Curtain Call Records. We also just released a video for the title track off of The Priest. Our first release is a self-titled 6 song EP. It’s also available on all streaming platforms and at shows. I would start with 'Psychotic Break' off the first EP and then go 'The Priest' off the new release."

FOR OUR FOLLOWERS:
"To the fans the scene, thanks for your support. Let’s keep metal alive. We’ll see you out there."

Thanks Metonic.
