Tarrera When we think of engraving, we might think of the U.S. But I think it’s all digital now. It was used for adornment in jewelry as far back as 1000 B.C.

Mint where money is printed from intricately engraved metal plates, the stuff Humphrey Bogart was also chasing down along with counterfeiters. Gone are the master craftsmen who made a little money making big money for Uncle Sam. Then there are engravings we’ve seen in the history books, make that the History Channel now, much of it found it seems on the beautifully designed weapons, flintlocks and

the such or even on the hilts of swords or on gilded saddles rode into medieval battles by metal clad knights of yore. Of course engraving is found in wood block art prints as well in the production of books, newspapers and the such, such printing efforts first seen in the 1450s, today again an art fading away in the Digital Age. Simply put, engraving is the art of cutting lines in metal, wood, or other material either for decoration or for reproduction. That lost art has been rediscovered by Laguna Beach based Tay Herrera, aka Tarrera. examples of his beautiful and timeless engravings seen here, albeit with a very modern spin, the spin found smoking off 300 series tires rolling on highly custom street and show bikes. Tay has melded metal engraving and motorcycling into a composite artform. As in many artforms with history behind them, Tay’s talents were part nature, part nurture. Says Tay, “I always knew I was an artist and was drawing people since I was five.” Growing up in Hacienda Heights, CA, Tay’s father owns and operates a specialty woodshop. “A really talented man, my father also made custom gun cases for people like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, President Ronald Reagan, Mickey Rourke and Sylvester Stallone, awesome stuff. My Dad was a master woodcarver but I just helped out with the gruntwork. I tried woodcarving once when I was seven and almost cut my finger off. I never liked working with wood,” laughs Tay. One day my Father asked me if I wanted to see something cool. “Being a 17-year old punk, I said nope. But after a while he convinced me to go with him to meet Angelo Bee, a true master engraver. “At his studio, we found him engraving eight gold ducks with a hammer and chisel onto a Browning shotgun. It was an artform I had never seen before. I was instantly hooked and couldn’t stop watching.”

Tay would go on to engrave guns himself. “Looking back I shouldn’t have jumped in so quickly, because I really chopped them up before I knew what I was doing. I found out very quickly that gun enthusiasts knew the difference between poor engraving and quality work. I actually had to buy one gun myself because I messed up it up so badly.”

But over the years his skills grew laser sharp, his eye and hand coordination matching his artistic skills. It all culminated about thirteen years ago when he began engraving motorcycles. “That first bike was part of a restoration project for a friend’s Moto Guzzi. At that point, I got an inkling of what I should be going with this. I did some engraving on a Suzuki Intruder I had at the time and went looking for a bike shop to show them what I could do. In Hollywood, while showing them my bike engraving, I found they were more interested in what I was doing with guns.”

In 1995 His friend Magic, owner of Harleywood introduced him to the work of C.J. Allan, a motorcycle engraver and was very impressed by his work and considers him an influence. Back in 2003 Tay got interested in custom knife engraving, taking an advanced class GRS in Kansas to learn how to do fine line-engraving combining a pneumatically driven tool and a microscope. He laughs and says, “The first day I couldn’t even engrave a straight line. I wasn't used to air driven tools. The guy behind me was, like me, a hammer and chisel guy and we were both cussing away, but by the end of the week, due to our years of engraving experience and the guidance of Sam Alfano we were both doing gold inlays and killer designs.”

The next push toward bike engraving came when he saw a bike show about the new Harley VRod on the Discovery Channel. “As a result, I started coming up with engraving designs for bikes.”

In 2003 he brought an engraved exhaust pipe to a show in New Orleans. “People, including Dave Perewitz, looked at it and said, ‘nice but we’ve seen it before.’” Dave Perewitz distributed engraved motorcycle parts in the mid ‘70s. “I realized I had to come up with something the industry had never seen before. I went back to a European form that I had used on some of my high end gun engraving work, a 3-D style, and that brought the response I was looking for. In particular from Jesse James. He jumped on it. He’s a trend setter and saw the potential right away. Then for two years straight I worked on his parts, particularly his line of air cleaners. He was really cool; he left the designs up to me. I couldn’t even tell you how many pieces I did for him. The next milestone for Tay was facilitated by custom bike builder Trevelen of SuperCo who was building a bike for the “Biker Build-off” TV show. “He came down and showed me what he wanted done and the rest is history. I engraved the bike’s air cleaner, rocker boxes, magneto and oil bag.”

The bike won the competition and helped open the door for Tay. “Before that my Web site was getting maybe 10 hits a day. A couple hours after the TV show aired, I had 10,000 hits.”

One illustration of his burgeoning work was the appearance of three custom bikes carrying his artwork at the recent Easyriders Pomona Bike Show. Danny Bogart’s Harley with Tay’s engraving took home the First Place in Stock Custom Class while the two other customs with Tay’s work, including Trevelen’s “El Peligroso” won a First Place while his all copper bike, again with Tay’s handiwork, won Best of Show. Most of his motorcycle engraving skills serve to enhance billet aluminum of which he says, “It took me a while to develop working in such soft metals because I had been working in the harder metal for the gun engraving.”

While we were speaking with Tay his work table held projects for A-list builders Jesse James, Paul Cox, SuperCo and Choppers Inc. In conjunction with the Indian Larry Legacy people, he had also recently created some art deco design engraving for Brad Pitt, so does find time to take on other jobs. As far as his future goals, in addition to creating more unique custom bike engraving, he’s also developing a line of jewelry fashioned in gold and silver. He laughs and says, “They’re big, obnoxious rings…I’ve got one called Dental Plan. If you get punched with one, well, you know. I started hand sculpting this one off aluminum cross back in 2015.I finished last year. Its mounted on a slightly larger wooden cross that had been laminated with walnut burl, and was French polished. Special thanks to my friend Joe Magliato for helping me with this piece.

I was asked by a student about classes or workshops I have taken. Someday I will expand on my education/instructional engraving history, but for now...

My first introduction to hand engraving was watching firearm engraver Larry Hopewell engrave at local gun-shows. 1975.

August 30, 1980. I just turned 17. I drove with my father to meet up with master engraver Angelo Bee at his studio. He gave me my first graver handle and would help me for several years with hammer and chisel instruction.

In 1993 I took a hand engraving class at Lassen college with master engravers Frank Hendricks and in 1994 with Ron smith. Both hammer and chisel engravers.

2003, Sam Alfano class in Emporia Kansas. Fine line microscopic engraving.
Mentors over the years. Lynton McKenzie, Richard Boucher, John Barraclough to name a few. These gentlemen were absolute gems. They were open to any question I had regarding engraving.

Side note, Thanks to my father who introduced me to Angelo and Lynton. He made custom presentations cases for them and were close friends.

My grandfather Theodore Oberdorf. He was the director of public works in Eureka Ca. One of the many things I inherited from him was patience. This is just one of many stories that comes to mind. On the back porch of my grandparents house was a small plastic potted plant. This plastic plant was like no other. In the course of a year this plant would grow and eventually bloom. Well, not exactly. It is rumored that every week or two my Grandfather would secretly take it to his garage/workshop then strip off the leaves and add prepared plastic leaves, stems etc that were just a bit larger than the ones before. So in time making it look like the plant was growing. I don't think he got the reaction he wanted because everyone knew that he was part of this miraculous creation.... yet he always denied it.

How awesome is this? Jesse is pretty sneaky, he saw my post I posted back in February of me going "In through the out door" to a local guitar center looking for a Gibson Les Paul Standard. A little while later he surprised me with this.
As you can see he has a heart, a very gracious heart. Out of all the amazing projects I worked on and created for WCC. There's a moment in time that stands out more than any project. It was when my sister Leslie was hospitalized for sepsis, RA and a myriad of other serious complications. Her four and a half year battle was horrible to witness. During that time and until the end Jesse would call and ask about her.
Their were times we'd spend 20 minutes chatting on the phone as he voiced his concern over Leslies declining health, and other times just chatting about our day. Guess he knew I had to get some s**t out. Sometimes I'd be thinking to myself, ok... I got to end this call and get back to work and I'm quite sure he did too! Lol. But I could tell he cared about Leslie, someone he never met but was concerned about her horrible situation. He did something for her that I wont get into which made her feel so special. 🇺🇸 If you ask me perhaps I'll tell you. She was smiling for weeks!
It makes me wonder how many times he has done amazing things that no one will ever here about. Well... GOD knows. Thank you my friend!

This blurry picture shows a hand engraved Weatherby rifles mark 5 floor play I engraved back in "93". I was Weatherby's chief engraver for 15 years starting in "92". All of the work including gold inlay and shading was engraved with a hammer and chisel. I used only an optivisor for visual aid, no microscope. I didn't even own a microscope until around 2015.

Some next level scrollwork I engraved on a stainless frame for Mr James at West Coast Choppers, 2020.
Tapping that ferrum mass since 1980.

I engraved this steel tube back in 1998. I used it for one of my display pieces at bike shows to show various styles. It's a little beat up yet the chrome still holds up. But what I really like is how the the polisher was extremely careful not to polish out the fine lines after I engraved it. Hard to find a polisher like that nowadays.

20 years ago I was planning to engrave and chrome this motorcycle exhaust heat shield. I wanted to use it as one of my samples to show at various bike shows. Well I stopped going to bike shows and I shelved it after only completing half of it. Last week I cleaned it and finished the engraving.
I'll post pics when I get it back from getting it chromed.
