REMUS GATSBY RESERVE RETURNS

ST. LOUIS (Nov. 13, 2024) – It’s enough to make Daisy Buchanan swoon. The historic Ross & Squibb Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, announced the return of the most-limited member of the Remus Bourbon family: Remus Gatsby Reserve 2024 Edition. Released to celebrate the era of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s legendary 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby” – Remus Gatsby Reserve is bottled at 104.9 proof (52.45% ABV) and will be offered in ultra-limited quantities this month at a minimum suggested retail price of $229.99 per 750mL bottle.

Created by Head Distiller Ian Stirsman and his team, the 2024 edition of Remus Gatsby Reserve features two bourbon mash bills (75% corn, 21% rye, 4% barley malt; and 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% barley malt) and is offered at cask strength. This year’s expression brings forward notes of antique leather and to***co on the nose followed by an initial sweetness of cherry syrup mingling with the earthy richness of walnut and oak on the palate. Remus Gatsby Reserve culminates with a finish that lingers, revealing hints of walnut, fig and roasted almonds.

Packaged in a distinctive Art-Deco-inspired bottle reminiscent of the 1920s, the Remus Gatsby Reserve 2024 Edition marks the third year for the award-winning brand. The inaugural 2022 expression of Remus Gatsby Reserve and the 2023 edition have achieved some of the highest recognitions in the bourbon category, including Double Platinum at the ASCOT Awards, a Double Gold at the SIP Awards, and a Gold from the San Franciso World Spirits Competition. Known primarily for their rye whiskeys that were created a few states over, Templeton Distillery has begun creating some whiskeys in their home state of Iowa. One of them is Fortitude (pictured here in the flask bottle) their first foray into the world of bourbon. Also pictured is their 6 Year Rye and Midnight Rye, which has been blended with a touch of dark port wine. These are going to be fun to try…

IT’S ALL ABOUT...WHAT WOOD?

The first Explorer release is a 6-year-old bourbon finished with two very specific oak varietals – Quercus alba (White Oak) and Quercus robur (French Oak). A combination scientifically crafted for a depth of character neither wood could bring to this rich bourbon on its own.

White Oak has long been a barrel-making favorite for American whiskey - but Whiskey Jypsi chose theirs from the Appalachian Mountains
for a special reason. The Appalachians have cooler conditions that lead to slower growth and a tighter grain - for the additional sweetness, richness, depth and viscosity they were looking for in their first Explorer release. And it just so happens that the stands of White Oak selected for Explorer Bourbon were harvested in North Carolina – not far from, owner, Eric Church’s own Carolina roots.

Oak from the French Forest of Troncais has been used for centuries to make fermenting barrels for some of the finest Bordeaux wines in history. For Explorer it was chosen because it lends elevated notes of spice and leather to that sweetness and viscosity of the Appalachian White Oak.

Milam & Greene has made it a habit of breaking the norm and delivering the unexpected, which usually falls in the exceptional category. So when I saw they were producing a Bottled-In-Bond, a release that is strictly regulated, I was intrigued to see what they had come up with to say the least. In addition, with a heavy focus on Texas whiskey this year, my relationship with the ladies of Milam & Greene has grown into friendships and the short spotlight that was planned has expanded into a multi-page interview. I’ve already been very impressed with the first few M&G whiskeys I’ve evaluated, so I can’t wait to see what the BIB has in store for me. Cheers to an awesome weekend…🥃

THE GUIDE TO TASTING AMERICAN WHISKEYS - GEORGE REMUS BABE RUTH RESERVE

Ross & Squibb, MGP, Remus…hell, even Seagram’s, are all names that point to Lawrenceburg, Indiana and decades of producing excellent whiskey. After its acquisition of Seagram’s in 2011, MGP had quite a bit of product and a fairly stationary market, but not for long. Soon after we saw the rise of NDPs and product began flying off the racks. After upping production for everyone else, MGP eventually decided to create its own brands. Thus the emergence of Roseville Union Rye and George Remus Bourbon. We have seen a number of Remus releases over the past few years, but this one is special. Commemorating each of Babe Ruth’s at bats (are walks counted?🤔) with a bottle for each and a stopper that is a recreation of a baseball bat handle, this truly is a unique release…🥃
