Mountain lion carcass found on Sylamore WMA
LITTLE ROCK – A mountain lion recently was found dead on Sylamore Wildlife Management Area in northern Stone County by a U.S. Forest Service employee. A necropsy was performed on the adult male Thursday.

There was no evidence that the mountain lion died of a bullet wound and there were no injuries consistent with being hit by a car, according to AGFC State Wildlife Veterinarian Jenn Ballard.

“An adult, male mountain lion weighing 118 pounds and measuring approximately 85 inches in length was examined Thursday at the AGFC Calico Rock regional office, Ballard said. “The carcass was moderately decomposed and was extremely thin. It had severely worn, broken and missing teeth, and the stomach was empty.”

Further examination will involve testing for viruses and toxins. Tissue from the animal also will be sent to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study at the University of Georgia and the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory at the University of California - Davis.

This is the second mountain lion carcass found in the state in the last 10 years. In November 2014, a deer hunter shot and killed a 148-pound male mountain lion east of Hermitage in Bradley County. It was the first time a mountain lion had been killed in Arkansas since 1975. DNA from that animal revealed that it almost certainly came from a mountain lion sighted in September 2014 in southern Marion County.

According to lab results, the mountain lion killed in 2014 most likely originated in the Black Hills breeding population of Wyoming and South Dakota.

Mountain lions – also known as pumas and cougars – lived throughout Arkansas until about 1920. Over the years, several sightings have been reported in other parts of the state. There have been 23 confirmed mountain lion sightings in Arkansas since 2010. Mountain lions are solitary cats native to North America. They are typically shy and reclusive, and they rarely attack humans. In fact, mountain lions are more likely to be afraid of humans. They have learned to avoid people, and they usually run away if they hear or see humans.

The public is encouraged to contact their nearest AGFC office with any sightings of mountain lions with verifiable evidence.

For questions concerning this sighting, contact Keith Stephens at 501-951-3562 or

There is an art to survival that many believe is being lost. If you don’t have access to a fridge anymore, what would you do? How will you preserve your meat for later use? People have been using other methods to preserve their food for centuries and is a lost art in today's modern world.

For hundreds of years, cast iron has set the standard for utility, durability, even cooking and taste. And so it goes, today, one of the best preparedness items you can buy is a cast iron camp oven also known as a dutch oven.

🚨❄️IMPORTANT PSA FOR YOU TRANSPLANTS TO ARKANSAS CONCERNING THE WINTER WEATHER COMING SOON❄️🚨
You transplants that are new to Arkansas are about to experience "Arkansas Winter”. This is 6 or 7 days of cold, maybe some ice and snow. The weatherman will threaten snow. It may snow, it may not and if the weatherman says 2 inches it could be 10 or it could be 1/2”. It doesn’t matter how much snow it is, we’ll all freak out because we don’t see snow often.
The threat of snow (or ice) from the weatherman is your prompt to head to the grocery store and buy milk, eggs and bread. It doesn’t matter if you need these items. It’s just what we do. Everyone in town will be there.
You’ll also need to make a mad dash for faucet covers and finding them and getting out of the store will be like an episode of the Hunger Games. Understand you’re in the redneck district.
Also don’t look for a sled. You won’t find one. In the rare chance we get enough ice or snow to sled, grab some cardboard or a trash can lid and go find the nearest hill.
We don’t have equipment to handle the winter and weather. The roads will be a mess and even though the state has been telling you for a week they’re ready, they’re not and it won’t work. Just stay home if you can and if you can’t just come to terms with the fact that nobody here knows how to drive in snow and ice.
If you happen to slide off the road or get stuck, turn your flashers on, take a deep breath and wait. Two guys in a four wheel drive truck or on a tractor or four wheeler will be along in no time to offer assistance. Don’t try to help them, they live for this stuff, and will do what they can to get you back on the road. If either one of them screams “hey y’all watch this” or "hold my beer" just get back and get your phone out and start recording, you’ll probably have a viral video.
Also of note, no matter what you do, don’t talk about how they do it "back home" in any of these scenarios. Nobody cares. You live in Arkansas now. Arkansas folks know they live in the greatest state in the country, and it’s our way or the highway.
You’ll be back in shorts and flip flops in a week to ten days and it’ll be nice until right around Easter.
That's when Arkansas's “second winter” will hit and be 2 or 3 days. This will hit right around the time you plant flowers and a garden.
During second winter it’ll go from 70 to 25 and you’ll experience all four seasons in one day. This too shall pass, get used to it and when second winter is over you can enjoy the 3-4 weeks of “spring” before summer gets here for 6 months and it’ll melt your face off until sometime around Halloween.
And Welcome to Arkansas ☺️🤣🤣🤣

Truly extraordinary picture here, from last night. This is looking south toward the storms that were just east of Ft. Smith. What you see here are called Red Sprites. They're not extremely well understood, but, documented across the globe and spectacular to witness (picture taken by Paul M Smith, and you can follow his work here... https://twitter.com/PaulMSmithPhoto)

What we do know is they are fleeting (hence, why most of us have never witnessed one), and they only seem to occur over the top of thunderstorms. In fact, far above them, within the Mesosphere. It's a real treat if you ever do get to see one. Hopefully, one day I will, too!

Way to go Jaden!!!!

Congratulations to Arkansas Trapshooter and Black River Trap & S***t Club member Jayden Dalton on winning the Browning Singles Championship at the 2021 Heartland Grand in Iowa. Out of 304 entries Jayden was one of 10 shooters who ran 200 straight. After shooting another 200 straight the decision was made to switch to wobble trap. Jayden ran another 75 straight before capturing the Championship Title from the other competitors which included the legendary Hall of Fame shooter Richard Marshall, Jr. Jayden is a fine young man and a great representative of the State of Arkansas.

Congratulations

Late last year, we were saddened to hear of the passing of Natalie Brewer, a local foster and adoptive parent, from right here in Greene County. Natalie, her husband
Leonard Brewer and their entire family, truly had a heart for children and youth in foster care. She was dedicated to providing children the most loving home, as long as they were placed in her care.

We want to keep Natalie’s legacy going by providing grants to 3-4 teens in foster care, in Greene County, who are graduating and will be attending college or moving out on their own! We know the expense that can carry along with it and while DCFS provides a great deal of help to these teens, we want to provide extra support!

We will be using all the funds donated last December, in Natalie’s memory, to help fund these grants, so thank you to all of those who donated. We hope to continue this each year.
