Today, we had the opportunity to celebrate Jerry “The King” Lawler in Evansville, Indiana. A place & venue we sold out many & many of times.

Such an amazing time with my friends from them so called “older days.” 😂

So, why did Jerry Lawler sign with WWE in 1992?

Well, the short answer is money, but as always, there is more to that. In the case of Lawler, he was inking a deal that was designed to basically keep USWA going.

Now, he could have approached WCW, but he didn't. USWA tended to operate in areas that could be considered WCW strongholds, but the company was not in great shape at the time. This was the Bill Watts era, where it was starting to look like WCW wasn't even paying it's light bill. (Who remembers the half dark arenas of 1992 in WCW?)

Lawler, and a few months later, Jim Cornette, made the conclusion that WWF was the one to do business with. Lawler cut a deal with Vince where he'd be a sort of part time character in WWF. I say sort of, as he's quite frequent, but Lawler didn't show up at a lot of house shows at this period, and has frankly never actually wrestled full time in WWE.

USWA was hurting. It's relationship with AWA had not only collapsed, but soon after, AWA itself was gone. It's other major partner, WCCW, was also gone. What they had left, was the branding of three major brands coming together, but two of those brands were as out of business as K-Mart.

Meanwhile, WWE was making a serious effort into building a farm system. USWA, later SMW, and lastly ECW. WWE was well aware of the collapsing wrestling industry, and needed to keep a few doors open, and that was exactly what WWE did for them.

And for Lawler, his company could stay alive a little longer. I say a little longer as USWA would not survive the 90s, and currently, much of it's library is stuck in a vault blocked by a court order.

Regardless, this was the beginning of a long relationship with Jerry Lawler, that has lasted all the way to this very year. (He's still under a legends deal, it was only the broadcast contract that expired)

USWA did close it's doors eventually, but without WWE, I feel the chances are that USWA wouldn't have made it through 1993.
