•••Information about the Coos County Animal Shelter•••

Recently, Capt. J. Patterson emailed local law enforcement agencies to indicate that the Coos County Animal Shelter is well over capacity and cannot currently accept dogs or cats. The e-mail was sent to ensure that our law enforcement partners throughout Coos County were aware of the shelter’s status.

The Coos County Animal Shelter is the only shelter in Coos County and is operated by staff from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office. It is important to note that the shelter currently houses over (30) dogs and (80) cats. The Coos County Animal Shelter is a “No Kill” shelter, meaning it falls between less than 7% of euthanasia of sick or injured animals. It is our hope and desire to adopt ALL animals to safe and happy homes.

The rate of canines received into the shelter before exceeding capacity was (3) for every (1) canine adopted.

Our Shelter Staff are working diligently to get these animals to their forever homes, please be patient with us.

The public has inquired about the status of the shelter after seeing posts on Facebook, so we wanted to let you know what we are doing to make things better for Coos County, one animal at a time.

•••Lifetime Coos County Sheriff’s Office Posse Member Richard (Dick) Swartling passes away•••

Richard Swartling, or “Dick,” if you have ever met him, was an amazing Man, Father, Husband, Marine, Lifetime Sheriff’s Office Posse Member, and so much more. I have only had the privilege to have known Dick for the past twenty years. At that time, I met a man who would give every penny he owned and every piece of clothes in his closet to anyone in need, not to mention lend his tractor to a neighbor (me).

Dick has been a Coos County Sheriff’s Posse Member for several decades. During that time, he served in several board positions and served as Posse Capt. Dick has been awarded numerous awards most recently a few years ago as the prestigious “Posse Person of the Year.” (I know I am missing several accolades)

Dick began the Horse Rescue Fund at the Sheriff’s Office Posse, which has been instrumental in the care of seized horses pending criminal prosecution. Any time work needed to be done on Posse grounds or if anyone needed a helping hand, Dick arrived on his tractor with shovels, a w**d eater, and rakes in tow. Dick would regularly donate major prizes like buckles and saddles for the local youth to win at horse shows around the county.

Dick supported more young kids who had a love for horses than I can count. No money for a horse, no problem, no place to ride the horse, no problem. Dick was always ready to help the next generation onto a horse.

Sadly Dick passed away this last week, but we are so blessed as a community that we got to have him for so long. If you knew Dick or were touched by him during his time on earth, make him proud and give that gift of love, joy, and happiness to others, as that would be a great way to remember his legacy.

Dick, you will be missed.

Fire Danger Level Increases To HIGH

Warm weather and wind in conjunction with the current heat wave across southern Oregon has prompted Coos Forest Protective Association (CFPA) to increase the fire danger level to “HIGH” (yellow) effective Saturday July 6, 2024 12:01am.
There is a Red Flag Warning as well as a Fire Weather Watch in place this afternoon (7/5/24) for eastern Coos County much of Douglas County.
CFPA is asking the public’s continued help with fire prevention this summer.
