M106: A Spiral Galaxy with a Mysterious Core
M106, a swirling disk of stars and gas, stands out with its striking blue spiral arms and red dust lanes near its center, as seen in this image taken from the Kuwaiti desert. Its core emits intense radio waves and X-rays, revealing twin jets extending throughout the galaxy. M106 is a nearby example of a Seyfert galaxy, where a massive central black hole is thought to be pulling in vast amounts of glowing gas. Known also as NGC 4258, M106 is 23.5 million light-years away, spanning 60,000 light-years, and is visible with a small telescope in the Canes Venatici constellation.
