The Audio Beatnik

The Audio Beatnik Want to know more about The Audio Beatnik? Read my story here. I ventured into high-end audio as a college freshman without even knowing what an audiophile was.

My life plan then was to change the world and listen to music, and I have spent most of my life trying to do these two things. Over the years, I worked part time in the audio business (shipping, sales, mailings, anything to get to buy equipment at cost or near cost). I’ve also hung out at a lot of great high-end shops and made some very good friends. Life has moved on, and while my professional li

fe and family responsibilities have somewhat limited the time available for hanging out, the friendships have endured. In 2000, I moved to the San Francisco area where I work as the director of missions for the CostaMeda Association of Churches. Much of my work is focused on helping immigrant communities here in the Bay area start new churches. This global cultural exposure has further broadened my musical journey, and I get to hear live music performed weekly in church. I love to listen to vinyl on a great stereo system, but it does not replace my need to hear great live music. Yoshi’s in Oakland, the symphony and Feinstein’s in San Francisco, and great local performances in Walnut Creek, fill that need. For me, most vacations also include tickets for some concert. Attending performances improves my ability to evaluate how closely great audio equipment can deliver a live experience. The Audio Beatnik continues my humble attempts to share my knowledge and connect with great people who share my interest in audio and music. I am going to attempt to go a little deeper, however, and really introduce you to some of the great people who make up this industry. I hope to be able to take you into the listening rooms and storefronts using my other hobby, photography. In addition, my wife, who has put up with my hobby for 42 years, will be helping out with her journalism and marketing skills now that she has retired. You’ll still find reviews from me on Dagogo from time to time, and you’ll see me more frequently at the shows. You’ll also see more content from me on The Audio Beatnik website. Your feedback and suggestions on what you would like for me to cover are always welcome.

What is The Audio Beatnik?

Want to know more about The Audio Beatnik? Read our story here.

We’re passionate about music, and we think audio systems exist for listening to music. We know that high-end audio systems are out there, and we love to hear them. But on our website, you’ll find down-to-earth opinions of what’s out there that’s really good, both in the world of dream systems and in the real world that most of us live in.

We are lucky. We get to visit the factories and showrooms where some of the finest audio equipment in the world is made, and we get to write about them. We also count many of the leading designers and manufacturers as friends and share their stories on our website. And, we regularly attend audio shows around the country to bring our readers pictures and our impressions of what’s new and what’s hot.

But, behind all of the visits, shows and product reviews, there is a genuine passion for the music. At our house, we have an analog system and a digital system, and we listen to both. When we meet our website readers in person at shows, they tell us how much they enjoy our music reviews. In fact, recently, we have started to have artists request that we write a review of their new albums.
