Storm timeline. Keeps getting earlier in the Triad on Friday. This report 1-3pm.

Winter Weather timeline for Friday, since this is the number one question, I put together a timeline map of when winter precipitation will likely start falling across the state on Friday. I will note that, thanks to the extremely cold weather over the last few weeks ground temperatures are very cold, so as soon as snow/sleet/ freezing rain starts falling, it'll stick to everything. I expect road conditions to go downhill quickly through the afternoon and evening. Don't take this timeline literally but it gives you a good range of when precipitation will start falling based on the latest data.

My forecast remains mostly on track, I am looking over data this morning and will adjust the maps slightly. The main thing is I'll pull the Freezing rain/sleet/snow line a little further east/NE across parts of Eastern NC as a brief period of freezing rain/snow is possible, mainly in the orange area, which will reflect my new map. Totals are about the same for all areas, but I might adjust them a tad in some areas.

The Bottom Line: There will be a winter storm impacting a good portion of North Carolina Friday into Saturday morning, and hazardous travel is likely to last on and off into the weekend, improving by Sunday into Monday. It'll not be the end of the world; there is no reason to panic, but if you have plans Friday afternoon/evening into Saturday morning, you might need to adjust some stuff. I'll keep you posted.

Guilford School delay Mon, Jan 6th

| Due to inclement weather this evening, and out of an abundance of caution, GCS will operate on a 2-hour delay tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 6, with an option to close. All employees will report as normal under Emergency Closing Plan A, using caution on the roadways. Thank you and please be safe.

Snowfall Odds next 15 days

I know many of you like to see this information.

Each day in the winter, I look at ALL of the Ensemble members of the GFS, European and Canadian Model and count all 100 runs for the next 15 days snow chances. This is what I saw today.

Confidence is very high for cold weather (colder than normal) in much of January. Probably a thaw late month and then more cold in early February.

Far out, we can not trust any one model run for a snow forecast. I can look most days and find one that shows a big snow over us. Sometimes people post these online and they ALMOST always do not happen. But when looking at 100, if you take the actual averages, you have something. Nothing specific this far out, but an idea about trends. We are trending toward a better snow chance than we have seen a quite a while.

We are snow fans!

Snow Fans, our weather pattern from the 2nd week of January to Feb 9th is more favorable for snow than we have seen in the past 3 years.

I don't believe any one run of the models that shows a snow 10-15 days out, they usually bust. But, I do feel that the Ensembles (comparing many random runs) gives us a good idea of our coming patterns.

For decades, the European Model has been the best and the long range ensemble (average) of the European gives us a decent chance for measurable snowfall over the period between January 6 and Feb 9 (farthest out this model runs). It shows an average of near 5 inches in the Triad during this period.

Using this technology, I can not see a specific storm system yet and give a specific date. But based on the projected weather patterns, there should be a few opportunities.
