It starts with the adults who care. Calling on aunts, uncles, friends, grandparents, neighbors, parents ...

School is almost starting and this would be a great thing to do:

Sit with your child for 5 minutes and explain that there’s never a reason to make fun of someone for their height, their weight, their skin tone, their clothes, their home life or the things they enjoy.

Explain there’s nothing wrong with wearing the same shoes every day.
Explain to them that a used backpack carries the same dreams as a new one.
Teach them not to exclude anyone for "being different."
Explain that someone that wears glasses should not teased because they need them to see/learn.
Explain to them that teasing hurts and that school is a place to LEARN, NOT to compete or spread negativity.

Remind them some kids don’t go home to loving families and some do not have all of the resources that they do, so it’s important to be kind. It all starts at home ❤️

Did anyone else know this about NC crops?

Did anyone else know this about NC crops?

Let’s talk tomatoes! 🍅

Right now, tomatoes are seen as a niche crop in North Carolina. Nearly all of our cropland is in what we call row crops: corn, soy, to***co, and cotton. But a few years ago, I saw that a lot of North Carolina's biggest farmers are quietly turning as much of their acreage as they can from field crops to fruits and veggies instead.

Why? They'd figured out what a lot of American farmers already knew. Fruits and veggies make more money than field crops. A lot more. That means fruit and veggies can help keep smaller farms stay in business. And farmers of all sizes deserve to pursue that opportunity.

Let me tell you how much more money fruits and veggies can make! North Carolina's traditional moneymaker crop is to***co. To***co earns about $3-4,000/acre these days. But tomatoes for sauce? Those take in $5,000/acre and sauce tomatoes can be picked by machine. More income, lower costs—that's a no-brainer. Most of the US’s sauce tomatoes are grown in California. But faced with rising land costs and scarcer water in California, it's prime time for sauce tomatoes to find a new home; right as North Carolina needs a new crop.

Bringing just 10% of California’s sauce tomato crop to North Carolina could earn our farmers an extra $100 million each year—an increase 200 times the size of our current tomato sales. It would also add up to $1 billion in additional economic impact. Considering that for 20 years our farm economy’s “growth” hasn’t kept up with inflation and the growing number of North Carolinians to feed, that’s real money.

We aren’t doing tomatoes in a big way here yet, because our leaders have been too content to do things as they’ve always done. But adding fruits and veggies to what we already grow—not just as farmstand products, but as things we can ultimately buy in multiple aisles of our local grocery store—will get our rural economy going again.

Our state deserves leaders who can recognize opportunity and make it happen.

If you shop, own a business and live on or off Randleman Rd. Please attend this meeting. It's time to take back the road and hold the Food Lion shopping center owners feet to the fire. We should not be afraid to shop or get killed by all the speeders pulling out of our meat market. We will be there and expect an action plan from our elected officials.
