Total starts were down 20.5 percent in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.22 trillion, according to Dodge Construction Network.

Nonresidential building starts fell 13.4 percent, residential starts increased 13.3 percent and nonbuilding starts dropped 43.7 percent over the month.

Says Eric Gaus, chief economist at Dodge: “A lack of megaproject activity contributed to a weak November for construction starts. There were only two structures over a billion dollars.”

The 2025 edition of the Pit & Quarry University Handbook opens with an in-depth look at the industry’s foundation.

Chapter 1 breaks down how U.S. producers supply roughly 2.4 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel each year, supporting more than 100,000 jobs and billions in economic activity.

Explore how aggregate production evolved from the postwar highway boom to today’s infrastructure-driven demand, why volumes have softened since the mid-2000s peak and what recent federal investment and ASCE’s 2025 “C” infrastructure grade mean for future materials needs.
