Bible Teaching:
The Heart That Turns Away From God
Psalm 36:1–3
“I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:
There is no fear of God before their eyes.
In their own eyes they flatter themselves
too much to detect or hate their sin.
The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful;
they fail to act wisely or do good.”
— Psalm 36:1–3 (NIV)
Teaching
David gives us a prophetic insight into the condition of a heart that has turned away from God. The issue is not just outward behavior—it begins with the inner posture toward God.
1. “No fear of God before their eyes”
When reverence for God disappears, restraint disappears. A person without the fear of God becomes the standard for themselves.
2. “They flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin”
Sin blinds. Self-flattery makes a person believe they are fine even while drifting deeper into darkness. Without humility, there is no repentance.
3. “Their words are wicked and deceitful…”
The mouth exposes the heart. What fills the heart eventually shapes the tongue and directs the actions.
Treasure 🪙:
This passage is a mirror for every believer. Before we look outward, we must ask:
Is the fear of the Lord still alive in me?
Do I justify attitudes God calls sin?
Are my words reflecting His truth or my flesh?
The cure is simple: return to the fear of the Lord, allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart, and walk humbly before God.
Commentary:
“Lord, keep my heart soft, my eyes open, and my steps aligned with Your truth.”
